The Magicians : Wait, why is fillory's magic tied to earth?

Wait, why is fillory's magic tied to earth?

I thought the magic of the earth came from the gods that used to be there. How is the wellspring in Fillory connected to the magic of earth?

Re: Wait, why is fillory's magic tied to earth?

The fountains? Because if you can travel to a world from Fillary, so can magic. In the book, it's an unintentional loophole that anyone other than the big guy magicians who are practically gods have magic at all.

Re: Wait, why is fillory's magic tied to earth?

Still doesn't make sense. Somehow earth's magic comes from the wellspring in Fillory.

Re: Wait, why is fillory's magic tied to earth?

This is a common trope. The "source of magic" which connects magic to several worlds or dimensions. Buffy the Vampire Slayer had something just like this, called the "seed of wonder" which supplied magic to all different dimensions, including earth. Narnia had one too, the little room of pools, which all led to different worlds, and this show HEAVILY and very OBVIOUSLY pulls a lot of inspiration and homage to Narnia.

Re: Wait, why is fillory's magic tied to earth?

I thought the Seed of Wonder only supplied earth with magic, which also kept the portals to other universes open, and once it was destroyed magic was gone. Of course Willow restores it, but I don't remember the Seed having an impact on the magic of other worlds.

Re: Wait, why is fillory's magic tied to earth?

It does. Magic is tied to Fillory, and if it dies there. It'll die in all worlds.

Re: Wait, why is fillory's magic tied to earth?

It's a wonderful idea to kick around. How could magic work this way?

They use the image of water in streams and fountains. I mean the source of magic in Fillory doesn't have to actually be that. After all, the inside is set up like Plovers officewhich pretty sure it won't be like after Martin goes bye bye.

It is a common trope and in Narnia? not my flavor of fantasy so I didn't know. I guess you'd have to put forth an image of magic that a pre-industrialized world could understand. Then maybe undermine that with science, which, if you were interesting, you'd undermine as well before coming up with a third idea.

by the way, no one should be Raising Rlyeh, ever.

Except of course that it's obviously a crashed ship that is sending out a distress beacon that humans can sometimes hear and it makes them crazy. Think of the worst earworm ever. Cthulhu is the brand name of the ship and aliens et al have entered hypersleep and only the rescue ship can rouse them. If anyone gets them up early everyone is cranky because there's no rescue ship. When it comes, they will leave quickly and without a backward glance, We will all feel oddly disappointed.

Re: Wait, why is fillory's magic tied to earth?

it's kinda complicated, in the books there are those giant guys that are like gods, they control all the things in the universe, magic for them is like a computer for us, a tool.
Sometime in the past there was a glitch in the system and magic escaped to the other worlds. The weelspring in Martin's cabin is not really in fillory, it leads to the very source of magic that covers all the universes, where those giant gods work. They are mistaken, it's not the magic in fillory that is dying but the magic from the source so it will die everywhere. I guess Fillory is more tied to earth because their fountains are close by each other in the neitherlands and they share similar circunstances.
