Lucifer : Are there any Christians that watch this show?

Are there any Christians that watch this show?

Do you feel guilty for watching and enjoying it? Sometimes I do. I find Tom Ellis rather mesmerizing.

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

I don't feel guilty. I love the show, but I have a firm grasp on my ability to separate my entertainment from my spirituality. I enjoy t.v., books and movies... There is something deeper than that in my spiritual life. I would have to believe in the work of fiction for it to make me feel anything more than entertained...and I just can't feel guilty about watching something as witty and cute as this show, but I'm not gonna go out and pray to Luci tonight because I like the show... Just gotta keep things in the right perspective... well, the perspective that's right for me anyway. I know it's all subjective.

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

Well said It is a wonderfully written well acted show. One of the best on TV. It is purely a work of fiction based on a comic. Why would I feel guilty about something that its sole purpose is to entertain us. I can make the distinction between what is real and what is not. My faith has taught me to embrace and love.
Besides how can you hate something you have never seen. That to me is the real sin, judging wothout knowing. Give me a show like Lucifer any day, better than a lot of shows on now.

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

Yes! I totally agree with ignorant judgement being worse than anything on the show. While there is a bit of embracing decadence on the show, there is also a lot of selfless love and acts of kindness...those moments totally make the show a better moral compass than most news and reality television that's on...not that I look for that in this show, but I always take away more positivity than negativity.

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

"I can make the distinction between what is real and what is not"

This is beautifully put - last year there was a lot of hate on this board from the so-called 'Christians' taking much offence over this show, but your sentence here got me thinking that perhaps there is something very flawed in such people's concept of Christianity or faith in general, when they are so easily outraged by a work of fiction (a TV show based on a comic, no less!) -
as if any true believer (a person that - as you said - knows what is real and what is a work of fiction, made for a sole purpose of light entertainment), would equate the two!
I myself am not a religious person, being brought up in a non-religious, atheist environment, but - having respect for any religious person that considers his/her faith a source of solace and moral strength, instead of an excuse to hate the Other -
- I know that such a person's faith is as real to them as anything empirical, and cannot be shaken by such banalities (or plain stupidities) as a freakin' comic book character.

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

Very well said zavijer :)

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

I doubt you can make the distinction of what is real and what is not if you think the Bible or any religion is real.. Can't you see how absurd it is? It's just an older Lord of the Rings told as if it were true to manipulate people..

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

For a while there it almost looked like we were going to be able to have this discussion without personal attacks - oh well...

I think you have me confused with someone else - I have no interest whatsoever in "other folks' bedrooms.....and what they do there...." or in imposing my beliefs on anyone else.

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

I am and I do. It's based on a comic book not the Bible. Hollywood fiction. No problems watching it.

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

Exactly Faithdaily! It's not biblical accurate to begin with, to me the series is like any other "supernatural power series like Heroes; Preacher; and many others.

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

I am and I watch avidly. It's has a better message of hope and redemption than many of the shows out now. Not to mention it's funny and romantic with great emotional depth.

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

Yes yes well said??

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

You said it perfectly! This is just what I think.

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

Totally agree. Loved that i found this thread. I am a Christian and i don't see why i shouldn't love this show.

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

I am and was ready to hate this show but I LOVE it

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

I don't feel guilty for watching it. It is just a form of entertainment. It is not biblical, so no I don't feel bad watching it. I know where I stand with God. If I were to start worshiping Lucifer because I associate him with Tom Ellis, then that would be a problem!

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

I do and find it quite enjoyable .Hopefully,Fox will not kill this one off. Satan made an appearance many years ago in Brimstone. Sadly it tasted on 13 weeks.Enjoyed that as well

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

Not a bit! I paid my dues and Yes, I find Mr. Ellis just perfect! And very HOT, no pun intended!!! LOL
Don't feel guilty, just enjoy. Its just a TV show, meant to make us happy!

Wait! Wait! Where are you going? I was gonna make Espresso!

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

Tom Ellis has said that his dad and sister are pastors and they love the show.

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

And his uncle and brother-in-law. A very religious and LOVING family!

This thread warms my heart. :)

Damn right we're snowflakes! Winter is coming!

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

Personally I would recommend this show to Christians as it provides a view point on God and Lucifer that sparks debate. The Biblical references to the Devil are very few and somewhat contradictory, and I think most people's viewpoint is actually based on Milton's Paradise Lost which was also fiction.

Lucifer provides an alternative view which would be beneficial to explore if you are serious about your faith.

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

I am a Christian. I also enjoy the show but never recruited my friends to watch it. I personally don't find it offensive maybe they might.
I don't find it offensive since according to MY belief is biblical inaccurate (that's my opinion).

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

I'm Catholic - I've attended Catholic schools all my life, church on Sundays w/the family, and of course we had mass at school when I was in the elementary as well especially the all girl Catholic high school I attended, we use to have mass almost 3 days a week; it didn't bother me. Anyway, I don't feel guilty watching this show b/c that's all it is entertainment and yes I agree Tom Ellis is DEFINITELY mesmerizing, the first time I laid my eyes on him was on the short-lived show Rush on USA, I was already hooked and he using an American accent. I didn't realize he was British until the show Lucifer, I read up on his IMDB profile and saw he was British which made him EVEN sexier, if that's possible. Don't feel guilty b/c its just a television program and in real life we know who we love/believe in so just enjoy the show. That's how I think about it besides its a very good show and GORGEOUS man (plus he's an AMAZING actor, which he's proved)- Tom Ellis ENOUG SAID.

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

From Tom Ellis interview: http://newyorkmoves.com/?p=8230

NYM: You come from strong religious family background so how has this role been received by both them and incidentally by any of your own faith-based beliefs?

TE: I did indeed grow up in the church. My dad is a Baptist pastor and so are my uncle and my sister! A lot of people have asked me how they feel about me playing Lucifer and the honest answer is they love it because they watch in the spirit it should be watched. It’s been interesting hearing people’s reactions to the show. Before we were even on the air there were a few people online asking for FOX to pull the show because it was glorifying evil, etc. etc., but none of those people had even seen it which I think suggests more about them than it does our show. Ultimately I see Lucifer as a satire using the most evil character in literature to tell the ultimate redemption story. If there is any message at all (which is not our objective) then it’s that people should take responsibility for their own actions, which I don’t think is such a bad thing. The messages that I get that really make me smile are from Christians who tell me about their faith and then say how much they love the show!

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

I love the show and don't feel the tiniest bit of guilt. I'm a completely orthodox Christian except for one thing: I hold to the doctrine of universalism, the doctrine that Jesus died for the sins of everyone. I believe that the notion of hell is contrary to the gospel.Obviously this needs defending and there are objections to it that I can easily meet, but no way I have the space to defend it here, but I'll just say, if you think you have a simple, knock-down argument against it that can be refuted, you are mistaken. Lots of previous people have thought about it as well. But like I said, no room here.

Just to expand on my background, I'm a Baptist, have three theological degrees (a masters from an Arkansas Baptist college and two from Yale Divinity School, plus a year spent at a Baptist seminary prior to going to Yale). I've served as a youth minister and summer music minister and interim pastor of churches. I read the Bible and theology consistent (Karl Barth and John Calvin, though I'm equally interested in Kierkegaard both as a philosopher and as a religious thinker).

And yet, I am not the least bit bothered by LUCIFER. Why would I? How many Christians have read with delight Milton's PARADISE LOST, and while someone could object that Milton was a passionately devout Puritan, one could reply - as many have - that it is odd that a Christian would write a work in which Satan was by far the most interesting character. And yet, it is hard to pick PARADISE LOST apart theologically. And while Milton wrote PARADISE LOST, he also wrote A TREATISE ON CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE COMPILED FROM THE HOLY SCRIPTURES ALONE. And there is no contradiction. Why? Because PARADISE LOST is make believe. Theologically correct, but make believe.

But if you go through life judging whether or not this show or that one is morally bad, you'll never read a book or watch a movie or TV show. Of course there are exceptions. Like that horrible show about ten years ago - THE SWAN? - that got cancelled prior to debuting because of public outrage, where women were going to be transformed from an ugly duckling to a swan by exercise, dieting, and PLASTIC SURGERY. Ick, ick, ick.

So I love LUCIFER, I love THE PREACHER, I love THE GOOD PLACE, used to enjoy SUPERNATURAL a little bit, and probably watched a bunch of other shows that some people will object to. But . . . fiction. Make believe.

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

Cafeteria Catholic if that counts...

the Key is to remember that the Lucifer (and in fact greater mythos) depicted in the show owes itself exponentially more to

Milton, Dante, DC Comics, and Fox TV

Than it does Genesis, Revelation, or the Gospels

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

Yes to your question.

I've always felt that this series has more basis with the classic stories of the Greek gods. You can actually draw parallels on supreme beings acting just like the Greek mythology gods.

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

I enjoy the show quite a lot and feel that its has nothing to do with my belief in God.

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

I think Christians would feel better if this was a Greek or Germanic pantheon type of show. The problem is, those religious systems were very ethnically and regionally driven. Not a good fit for the modern multi-cultural society.

So take the Lucifer comic and make the Abrahamic linage as the "pantheon". Considering Christianity was the first trans-cultural religious system, it makes sense. Much to my old Identity Christian heart, Jesus wasn't white guys.

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

Let's hope Jesus doesn't choose any time in the next four years to come back. He'd never make it past our borders. America is screwed.

Damn right we're snowflakes! Winter is coming!

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

Hmm, I'm not so sure that Christianity was the first trans-cultural religion. Rome was spreading their pantheon to all their various provinces many years before Jesus came along, and they no doubt had many converts from different ethnicities and cultures that Rome brought to heel.

The Hittites also come to mind, they were spreading their religion all throughout their conquered provinces from at least 1600 BCE. They also had a habit of absorbing gods from their conquered subjects.

The greatest trick God ever pulled was convincing the world that He's good.

This.

Christianity was not the first trans-cultural religion. There were many before it.

I for one wouldn't feel better - I'm loving it like it is.

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

Considering it's entertainment, based on a comic book, why would I feel guilty at all?

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

You hear so much about God Vs. Satan growing up. It's interesting to watch their dispute played out as one big family spat. Just on some supernatural type of level. lol Mom and dad arguing, the rebellious son, etc.

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

Christian here, no issues what so ever.

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

I am a Christian and I can't see any reason to feel guilty about watching it. To me it is just a fun show.

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

I'm a Christian and I'm enjoying the show...isn't that just what it is? Entertainment?

My totally awesome signature goes here

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

Why feel guilty at all? First it's an entertainment show. And second I like the idea they've presented of Lucifer as a punisher of evil rather than an evildoer who makes people do bad things. In the biblical version he is a fallen angel. In this version he is kicked out of home but assigned to look after hell. It all fits. And who could feel bad about like Tom Ellis!

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

More to the point.
Any outraged Satanists?

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

I have a friend who is a good bloke, an atheist and a bit of a humour free zone. He fancies Maze, but objects to the religious element in the show.

Re: Are there any Christians that watch this show?

If anything, this show actually affirms elements of Christian faith, mythology, what ever you want to call it. If the Devil is real, then so is God; while Ellis plays Lucifer as charismatic, he's still a narcissistic jerk that sometimes does the right thing for the wrong reasons; Lucifer does not like sinners, he is contemptuous of them, especially if they hurt people, and the point of CHOICE is hammered home: The "Devil" might tempt the collective Us with his hedonistic charms BUT choice to do good and/or evil is ours alone.

Further, redemption is a theme here -- people and ever the devil might seek (and find?) Redemption.
