Supergirl : Episode Opinion: Changing

Episode Opinion: Changing

I just watched the episode and I want to ask: I am I the only one who had a problem with how Mon-El's hero motivations came about. I mean yeah, using his powers to be an enforcer was DEFINITELY the wrong way to go, and SUpergirl had a point tearing him apart over it, Alex too. That was one thing, but what in Rao has them thinking Mon-El is obligated to be a superhero. Someone should have reminded Kara that SHE does what she does because Earth is where she was raised, it's her home and she wanted to help protect it. Mon-El JUST got there.

He is a recent alien refugee, just like all the other ones in National City. There are probably a lot of legal ways he can use his power to make a living, and he would have every right to do so. This world is alien to him and he barely knows anything about it, let alone want to risk his life for it. By the Danver's logic, they should be pressuring M'gann into joining as well.

And since when has he suddenly been a coward and selfish. He should have reminded them that he used to be someone's bodyguard and was willing to give up a chance to escape to save them. Even when he was beating up the alien, it was obvious he just saw it as a job and nothing else. The writers seem to have made Kara forget what she learned about outgrowing her racism and letting people live their own lives, because she instantly made that incident about him fulfilling her expectations, instead of him settling on to Earth, becoming a stable citizen, and making sure he doesn't get lynched by bigots.

For this reason, I see her and Alex responsible for Mon-El getting captured. Unless I missed something, their job was to make sure he stayed hidden and underground. Instead, they guilt tripped him into fighting for them and that's probably how Cadmus decided to go after him.

If anyone agrees/disagrees, please reply.

Re: Episode Opinion: Changing

The thing is Cadmis wants to destroy all aliens. Maybe they just want Intel from him.

Re: Episode Opinion: Changing

I agree with you, while its clear that Kara believes everyone should be heroes and she basis her views on how quickly he should step up because hes like her, with her powers, and wants to force him into it because of her xenophobia towards his planet.

I was more cross with Alex, while she was supported by people with the change in her life, she was very harsh on him, hes not got a loyalty to earth, it seems a month max since he awoke, he had to deal with new powers, waking to the knowledge that his planet is gone, its been 36 years since he left the planet, all his family and friends are dead even if they survived they would be 36 years older, his family wouldnt know him, the people on his planet wont know him, all his plans for the future no longer exist.
He has all that to deal with and no one to talk to about it, Winn and James see him as a threat to Kara as a romance, Kara dislikes the fact hes from Daxam, so he acts in her stereotype, I assume to hide the pain he feels.
But Alex knowing hes no where near combat ready and seeing her boss and sister nearly killed by this creature, emotionally black mails him (by using the one person he has connected with as a reason) to send him, unarmed with no guidance or support to face some thing 2 much more powerful beings couldnt stop.

I put this down to her loving her sister and seeing her sister fond of him, drinking with her, and hanging around with her and shes worried that Kara will be hurt if hes not what she expects, as a sister she doesnt see his side, she only cares for her sister. And hes not of importance to her.

I think Cadmus may have picked him cos of the party when he got shot point blank and got up no problem, hes not really understood about how to hide his power, and I guess being what I assume is the prince (or at least the palace guard) means he would have visited other planets and not had to hide and is struggling with that.

Re: Episode Opinion: Changing

I agree. It is too urealistic.

Just cause you have power doesnt mean you have to risk your like saving the world. It must be a personal free decision not a forced one.

Kara is arrogant. And like all <<pure light>> heroes she refuses to accept anything dark [meaning greed, self preservation, satisfaction of basic instincts etc]. I really do wish a wise villain appears and puts her in her place.

As for Alex...i can justify her behavior a little due to the fact she was not very emotionally stable at the time.

Re: Episode Opinion: Changing

No it's a great point but Spider-Man disagrees with you. In Civil War (movie) he said, when you can do the things that I can, but you don't, when bad things happen, they happen because of you.

I think this is a really tough philosophical question, but I agree more with the Uncle Ben/Spider-Man logic.

With that said, Kara was way too pushy, way too fast.
