James Bond : The Blofeld connection just baffles me and always will

The Blofeld connection just baffles me and always will

The producers, the actors, the writers, the studio, the editorsnobody, at any point during the making of Spectre stopped and said, "Hey, making Bond and Blofeld brothers might be really, really stupid."

I swear, half the budget must go to cocaine or something.

Pre-edit: FOSTER brothers! Yeah, I know, and it changes nothing.

There is a manhe travels fasthe has purposehe brings violence and destruction.

Re: The Blofeld connection just baffles me and always will

Word game:

Always baffled. Continually disconcerted. Eternally flummoxed. Generally

Panty-bunched!

What no man Can give ya. And none Can take away.

Ha ha. Hardly!

Re: The Blofeld connection just baffles me and always will

The strange thing is, is that this twist was already done before in the third Austin Powers movie.

Why the Bond filmmakers felt they had to do it in a serious Bond movie is beyond me, unless it was just a questionable coincidence?

Re: The Blofeld connection just baffles me and always will

Well I would suspect it counts as more conincidence than intentional homage. I would not think Bond stories are written in ignorance of AP scripts, as basically the last 18 years show strong signs of overreaction against being charged with aping AP, at least until SP. So, I suspect if the moratorium of anti-AP plotpointing has been relieved, SP might have reveled in its Blofeldian "unnecessariness" a bit too wantonly. Definitely, a major trouble spot many have with SP is the convoluted, derivative, and unFlemingish character redefinition of ESB.

Re: The Blofeld connection just baffles me and always will

You know, if the long-gone Bond Board Song Thread was still around I could make a killer version of the "Blofeld Connection".

What no man Can give ya. And none Can take away.

Re: The Blofeld connection just baffles me and always will

Why are there so many
Secret step brothers?
And what's on the author's mind
Brothers go cuckoo
And drill jawbones too
Brothers have plenty to hide
So we've been told
And some choose to believe it
I know they're wrong wait and see
Someday we'll find it
The Blofeld connection
The brothers, the cuckoos and me

Re: The Blofeld connection just baffles me and always will

Well, now, that's pitch perfect.

What no man Can give ya. And none Can take away.

Re: The Blofeld connection just baffles me and always will

It seems to have been Sam Mendes' idea. But was clearly okayed by everyone due to his success with SF. Maybe they were all feeling smug so didn't stop to think.

Plus all other franchises have to have the 'personal' connection to baddies nowadays.

"What are you, some kind of doomsday machine, boy?"

Re: The Blofeld connection just baffles me and always will

Do you have a reason/source to say whose idea it truly was? That color always interests me. Obviously, everyone oks and goes with whatever we ultimately get (to varying degrees, depending on role, blah blah)but I wouldn't know where these ideas get generated exactly; would have assumed one of the writers conceived/pitched it, got buy in.

Re: The Blofeld connection just baffles me and always will

Screenwriter John Logan was pretty happy with what he called the hook to SKYFALL (M's death, plus returning to his boyhood home in Scotland).

Later in advance of SPECTRE he likewise touched on the idea of a hook (relating it to a Fleming short story and Oberhauser).

So I'm thinking it's John Logan.

What no man Can give ya. And none Can take away.

Re: The Blofeld connection just baffles me and always will

I'm positive it was Logan. Hence the last minute decision by Babs and Michael to bring back Purvis and Wade to try to make things more Bondish. Too late!

Connery, Moore, and Brosnan! Accept NO substitutes!

Re: The Blofeld connection just baffles me and always will

You think the producers weren't all in on that plot item?

They're the producers. These are Bond films.

Re: The Blofeld connection just baffles me and always will

No doubt the producers were asleep at the wheel on that one. They figured with Mendes and Logan driving they best not get in the way.

Connery, Moore, and Brosnan! Accept NO substitutes!

Re: The Blofeld connection just baffles me and always will

Not likely. Or possible, really.

Re: The Blofeld connection just baffles me and always will

Hmmm. Asleep as in not as concerned as they might have been?

Or asleep as in unaware?

Because the latter doesn't seem feasible.

That some dubious storypoints got floated, scripted, rehearsed directed, shot, edited, scored, etc is unquestionable. But I don't think Bond stories are done without EON knowing about them.

Re: The Blofeld connection just baffles me and always will

Here's an interview where Sam Mendes alludes to his ideas for the family connection.

"What are you, some kind of doomsday machine, boy?"

Re: The Blofeld connection just baffles me and always will

Yes, not as concerned as they should have been. Or would have been had the director been someone like Rog Spottiswoode and the writers someone like Purvis and Wade (without Logan).

Connery, Moore, and Brosnan! Accept NO substitutes!

Re: The Blofeld connection just baffles me and always will

Yeah, I would have to assess the current situation as producers (+writers, diredtors etc) overestimating the resonance of "let's make the Bond v ESB thing personal" and underestimating the amount of "Well, that's pretty dumb. And so unnecesary" response.

As I don't think I've heard of anyone who thinks its a particularly good idea, or even an innocuous idea done well. At best, I think it impacts some as an innocuous idea not really done effectively. And the rest as something worse, such as a full on bad story idea.

Of course, I don't think its too important, unless they try to harp on it or salvage it by adding to its convolutedness, going forward. Some story ideas are best sent upstairs, like Richie Cunningham's brother, Chuck.

Re: The Blofeld connection just baffles me and always will

I wouldn't have minded Chuck (Jack Petachi - Bond connection!!!) and his basketball (no Bond connection there) popping up from time to time.

Connery, Moore, and Brosnan! Accept NO substitutes!

Re: The Blofeld connection just baffles me and always will

Sounds like, some sort ofBedlam.

Re: The Blofeld connection just baffles me and always will

FORSTER-brothers, you might say. Or I might.

To make sense of the Craig films there's this video.

The intent is okay. But those freaking olives. And pronunciation.

What no man Can give ya. And none Can take away.

Re: The Blofeld connection just baffles me and always will

It's stupid but so pointless a connection it doesn't really matter. They could easily never mention it again.

"You'll have to speak up I'm wearing a towel"

Re: The Blofeld connection just baffles me and always will

Except we can never forget it now. Cuckoo. Cuckoo.

There is a manhe travels fasthe has purposehe brings violence and destruction.

Re: The Blofeld connection just baffles me and always will

The Blofeld twist is a desperate move from a franchise running out of ideas but the sad thing is I kinda saw it coming.

Profile
Believed to be dead, Franz Oberhauser has kept a low profile for over 20 years building an intricate network of spies and terrorists who, in turn, infiltrated other terror organisations. Not afraid to take the most drastic actions to further his goal, Oberhauser killed his father as part of a plot to fake his death. He now prefers to go by the name Ernst Stavro Blofeld which he has appropriated from his mother's side of the family. Franz is sly and spiteful and conducts all of his business with an arrogant self-assuredness.

"It's always been me. The author of all your pain."

Scheme
Blofeld has been running a network of terror rings and using their manpower for his own gain. Secretly behind some of the largest plots in Bond's recent years, SPECTRE has positioned itself as a puppet-master of terror. Blofeld now wants to use the recent spate of successful attacks on high profile targets to fool governments across the globe into rushing into operation new surveillance methods and protocols. With a stooge at the head of the British intelligence force and the Nine Eyes programme, SPECTRE will have a new level of surveillance and power.

"Welcome, James. It's been a long time."

I've Been Expecting You
Bond infiltrates one of SPECTRE's infrequent midnight meetings whereat Blofeld will select a new henchman charged with assassinating the 'Pale King'. However, Blofeld is not fooled and quickly spots 007 in the rafters. In this brief encounter the villain hints at a significant history between 007 and the SPECTRE chief before SPECTRE goons eject Bond violently from the building and Hinx takes chase.

Headquarters
Blofeld has made home in an isolated crater, created by the Kartenhoff meteorite. Somewhere in the south of Morocco where few cars and only occasional trains travel, SPECTRE runs a high-tech observation centre, tapping the power of the world's nations and their security architectures. The base includes a solitary chamber, starkly dressed, where the impactful Kartenhoff now resides. It also includes living quarters, modern and minimal but comfortable.

Gadgets & Vehicles
Blofeld's revenge against his boyhood nemesis, James Bond who, as an adopted child, won the affections of Oberhauser's father is to strap 007 to a mechanical chair and use precision surgical drills to torture the secret agent. The machine targets Bond's grey matter so as to render him memoryless and exert as much pain as possible in the process. Blofeld also has a private helicopter to transport him around London at a moment's notice.

Dress Code
The villain has a penchant for nehru shirts, short trousers and sockless boater shoes. He dresses in plain grey or grey blue outfits and worries little about his physical appearance.

Goodbye, Mr Bond
Blofeld leaves Bond for dead in the ruins of the old MI6 headquarters, but Bond escapes before the building's imminent destruction and pursues Blofeld's helicopter through the centre of London by boat. Blofeld is initially oblivious to a light pinging as Bond's Walther rounds pluck gently at the exterior of the helicopter. Then 007's shot finds its mark and the helicopter careers wildly out of control. The pilot makes a crash landing on Westminster Bridge and Blofeld is quickly surrounded by police, M, Tanner, Moneypenny and Bond. Confronting his childhood rival, Bond stands over a man resigned to his death. Instead of killing in cold blood, Bond ditches his gun in the river and leaves Blofeld to the authorities.
