Poldark : Elizabeth fans?

Elizabeth fans?

Hi, I never liked book Elizabeth but I like the show one. I feel pity for her in some ways and Heida Reed does a great job in showing her vulnerabilities. All the women of Poldark are amazing on the show. I'm curious though are there many Elizabeth fans here?

Re: Elizabeth fans?

She's too bland for my taste.

Re: Elizabeth fans?

My introduction to Poldark was the adaptation of the seventies. Elizabeth was probably a little too villainous, and easier to dislike. Then I read the first few books, and discovered that Elizabeth rarely appears and is a much more ...nebulous character.

I applaud that Horsfield has attempted to round out Elizabeth's personality. For the sake of the audience, there has to be a reason why Ross carries a torch for her for over a decade. Many of us have been puzzled as to why she has been portrayed as quite so nice, and have been comforted by the hope that it has been some sort of grand plan on the part of the screenwriter. We have been somewhat appeased by the revealing of a more devious and manipulative Elizabeth over the last few weeks.

So am I an Elizabeth fan? No. But I won't be booing and hissing her, either, like I did in the seventies.

:)
I saw an interview of Heida Reed yesterday and in it, she said that Elizabeth has "come into her own" in this season. After Francis' death, she has had to learnn to fend for herself and she has started relying on the methods (you may say 'tricks') that are in her arsenal, lol. It doesn't help that her family and estate are at the mercy of the manipulative, devious George.

Re: Elizabeth fans?

I know Elizabeth too well from the books & the "1st edition" in the 1970s to fall for the kinder Elizabeth in this adaptation.
For me, her eaves dropping on Frances & Ross left a bad taste in my mouth.

I too thought her letter to Ross forewarning him of her marriage to George was a "if you want me come and get me or I'll have to go through with it". If she had truly wanted to marry George she would have done so and THEN let Ross know.

Ehhhh-XACT-ly

Eavesdropping is probably one of the only ways she is going to find out what is going on financially or for the future of her family. Francis didn't exactly talk about family business with her. It was actually unusual for the time for Ross to discuss business dealings and family finances with his wife. I always had the impression that women in that time and station dealt with the running of the household i.e. servants, menu/event etc planning but were rarely included in their husbands business ventures. It is a much more modern concept of spouses being somewhat equal partners with a say in matters effecting both.

Oh for sure! She expertly manipulated Ross. The only thing I wonder about is what she thought Ross could do about it. He couldn't divorce Demelza and marry her. Ross wasn't wealthy enough to support two households, although I do think he would have if he could afford to. And would Elizabeth really be happy to be a mistress? I think not. No, she doesn't love George but she does love George's lifestyle and no one else was in the offering (other suitors not Ross, although was she looking?)

Re: Elizabeth fans?

although was she looking?

Exactly! Why did she never consider this? Surely she knew that Ross and Aunt Agatha would not be happy if she considered George's proposal. So if she wanted to secure her financial future, why didn't she socialize a little bit and look for other possible suitors?

Re: Elizabeth fans?

It does seem out of character for the character. She thrives on attention, admiration, adoration.

Why not 1-10 more men.

Re: Elizabeth fans?

I can understand her still holding a torch for Ross BUT telling him about it at the dinner party tonight - after the HUGE sacrifice made by Demelza is just disgusting. Demelza risked her life to help Elizabeth, her husband and her child AND lost her own child because of it. Elizabeth should be tossing rose petals in Demelza's path and kissing the ground she walks on not trying to get back into Ross' brain.

Re: Elizabeth fans?

Much prefer Elizabeth to Demelza, in this series, I haven't read the books or seen the first show. Can't understand why he chose the nagging, moaning, insecure Demelza to the quiet, calm Elizabeth, think once Liz gone I shall stop watching, especially if Caroline comes back!

Re: Elizabeth fans?

Well, you'd better stop watching then.

Re: Elizabeth fans?

lol, she not around yet so can at least see this season out

Re: Elizabeth fans?

I remember the beautiful Elizabeth from the original show, and I read the books. I felt terribly sorry for her when she met her fate. (though it was a bit exciting when Ross....well, better not spoil anything).

Re: Elizabeth fans?

though it was a bit exciting when Ross what?
You can use the spoiler tag like so (without spaces):

Re: Elizabeth fans?

The other way, Helen, is to highlight the part you want to black out, and then click on "Spoiler" in the bar above your post. (Same with italics, quote, links, etc.)

Re: Elizabeth fans?

Thanks! I know how to add a spoiler tag. :) I was showing the other poster how to do it - which is why I added the spaces. Someone said on another thread, that they were posting from an Apple phone and couldn't see the markup buttons.

BTW, Supergran, do you know what other exciting thing Ross does w.r.t. Elizabeth that hasn't been shown yet?

Re: Elizabeth fans?

The whole dinner party scene disgusted me. Liz is a witch.

Re: Elizabeth fans?

That's where she lost me too.

I always viewed Elizabeth as a naive and self-centered spoiled rich girl, but I never saw her as evil until she put the moves on Ross after Demelza risked everything to nurse the other side of the Poldark family during their illness. At that point, it became clear she was not just self-centered, but selfish. Not naive, but deceptive and manipulative. Then when she married Warleggan, she further confirmed she was a gold-digger who didn't give a damn about anyone other than herself.

Re: Elizabeth fans?

Nope, not a fan at all. I think Heida does a good job portraying her but there's only so much you can do with a bland character who spends her time pacing and staring moodily out windows. I'll take firecracker women like Demelza and Caroline, who are out there in the story actively DOING THINGS, any day of the week.

I'm just counting down the days until Elizabeth's death so I don't have to put up with her perpetually pouty face. There, I said it and I make no apologies for it. 😀

Re: Elizabeth fans?

I have never liked Elizabeth. Was my view tainted by the first adaptation of Poldark? Yes. Later, after reading the books that view was confirmed. I don't dislike Elizabeth because she made a mistake, but I do dislike her for making that mistake known to her husband and then later to Ross. She blames Francis for going elsewhere but doesn't admit to herself that the only reason he did so, was because she was denying him at home. I dislike her for toying with Ross' affections, even after he was married. For believing herself to be the victim and for not realising that her actions or lack of actions had consequences, she takes no responsibility for anything. She craves the admiration from the males of this story for her own gratification. She is a selfish manipulator with no real depth of character.

Re: Elizabeth fans?

Don't like her at all. She plays nice with Demelza, all the while listing after her husband.

Re: Elizabeth fans?

In the very beginning i felt for both women .. I really did.. That scene when she had a nerve after everything to ride out to Demelza's place and ask her ( HIS WIFE) why Ross hasn't been responding to her letters though .. Any sympathy i might have once had for her well turned to disgust and repulsion.. Just imagine your husband's ex, the one he was madly in love with, who you know still carries a flame for and she him , drives over to the house you both share and asks you why he hasn't been returning her calls.. Even though he'd been spending most of his time with her ... Would you feel bad for her ?

Re: Elizabeth fans?

I'm not an ELizabeth hater. I understand how WG wrote her so it is no issue with me. I'm not happy with how she carries about everything, but then again I have never been the type of woman that is blinded by feelings and am able to see the truth of the matter regardless of how I see someone.
