Short Films : The Top 50 Shorts list on IMDB

The Top 50 Shorts list on IMDB

I know these lists rarely amount to much but it has come to my attention that the list of top rated shorts on IMBD is horribly inadequate. Muppetvision 3D is listed while Un Chien Andalou is not. This is unacceptable!

So...If you are a genuine fan of shorts (or would like to be) list your favourites here so we can all make an effort to see them and then vote on them.

I'm talking CLASSIC short films.

I'll start the list:

Un Chien Andalou
The Red Balloon
Meshes of the Afternoon

Re: The Top 50 Shorts list on IMDB

Off the top of my head. I'll come back when I've thought about it more.

La Jetée (1962)

That's part of your problem, you haven't seen enough movies. All of life's riddles are answered in the movies.

Re: The Top 50 Shorts list on IMDB

I know they lack "snob appeal" but many of the silent comedies should also be considered as well as the films of Laurel and Hardy. Shorts should not just be art films.

Re: The Top 50 Shorts list on IMDB

I absolutely agree. Suggest some good ones.

Maybe Three Stooges too.

Re: The Top 50 Shorts list on IMDB

Just off the top of my head, Snub Pollard's IT'S A GIFT--rarely seen, but a gem; Laurel and Hardy's BIG BUSINESS and BUSY BODIES; Buster Keaton's THE PLAYHOUSE and COPS; Fatty Arbuckle's FATTY AND MABLE ADRIFT. There are certainly others but these silent or early sound films are classic shorts that are totally ignored just because they weren't made recently. In fact, that's a big flaw with IMDB--too much emphasis on just the recent and old classic films are forgotten.

Re: The Top 50 Shorts list on IMDB

A couple more for now...

La Rivière du hibou (1962) (aka An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge)
The Music Box (1932)

That's part of your problem, you haven't seen enough movies. All of life's riddles are answered in the movies.

Re: The Top 50 Shorts list on IMDB

Into the Cellar
David Lynch's The Grandmother
Stanley Kubrick's Day of the Fight

Dil is a man.
Mr. Orange is a cop.
Rick Deckard is a replicant.

Re: The Top 50 Shorts list on IMDB

I recently discovered this...
Cat Concerto, The (1947)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0039251/

One of the best I've seen, and there is NO dialog, which is nice for my hearing-impaired self.

Re: The Top 50 Shorts list on IMDB

My 2 cents:

- O Branco (2000) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0286522/
- Balance (1989) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096880/
- The Tale of the Paper Hearts (1998) http://www.clipland.com/Summary/800002013/
- The Waiters (1993) http://www.clipland.com/Summary/800002071/
- A Letter from the Western Front (1999) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0209097/
- Tim Tom (2003) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0344467/
- Big Buck Bunny (for the effort!)
... and surely two dozen more.

And that's what we got so far:

- Un Chien Andalou http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0020530/
- The Red Balloon http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0048980/
- Meshes of the Afternoon
- La Jetée (1962)
- La Rivière du hibou (1962) (aka An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge)
- Into the Cellar
- David Lynch's "The Grandmother"
- Stanley Kubrick's "Day of the Fight"
- The tell tale heart (1953)
- VEM (I Know)
- SMAFUGLAR (Two Birds)
- A Day In the Death of Donny B
- The Running Jumping and Standing Film
- The Heart of the World
- "Anything" by Stan Brakhage

Feeling like this is another category... (If we go down that road, all the Lumieres', Méliès', etc. are in.):
- many of the silent comedies
- films of Laurel and Hardy. Shorts should not just be art films.
- Maybe Three Stooges too.
- Snub Pollard's IT'S A GIFT--rarely seen, but a gem;
- Laurel and Hardy's BIG BUSINESS and BUSY BODIES;
- Buster Keaton's THE PLAYHOUSE
- Buster Keaton's COPS;
- Fatty Arbuckle's FATTY AND MABLE ADRIFT.
- The Music Box (1932)
- Cat Concerto, The (1947) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0039251/

I feel Pixar needs its own category, as once these films compete with other shorts, for example in a festival or a film-bus, all others simply "fade to grey". Their comedy is a sure hit, with most audiences. Might be, they (together with Nick Park's) are the blockbusters of animated shorts, rendering all rivals chanceless:
- Lifted Pixar (overrated?)
- Luxo Jr.
- Knick Knack
- Geri's Game
- ...

Re: The Top 50 Shorts list on IMDB

Many great silent era shorts, in no particular order:

Ivens (Regen, De Brug)
Keaton (The Playhouse, One Week, The High Sign)
Kirsanoff (Menilmontant, Brumes d'Autonme)
Melies (A Trip To The Moon, The Impossible Voyage, The Kingdom of Fairies)
Chaplin (Pay Day, The Immigrant, The Adventurer)
Griffith (A Corner in Wheat, The Unchanging Sea)
Bevan (Be Reasonable)
Laurel & Hardy (Big Business, Leave 'em Laughing, Wrong Again)
Bunuel (Un Chien Andalou)

I could list a few more by those artists but that should be a good starting place. No doubt I will discover more as well.

Vigo's "Zero de Conduit" (1933) is an excellent sound film as well.
