Define "Seriously" and why "Seriously" has become analogous to "Superior".

Rooney Mara SUCKS in this. Truly, awful. She even admitted to giving a purposely poor performance. I'm amazed she went on to have a career.
The Evil Dead remake was about as serious as the original. and it was far better. The ED series didn't get comedic till ED2 & AoD

She did actually admit to self sabotaging, not during the filmmaking but during the audition process, she has said that she didn't want this role at all and during all of her auditions tried to be really bad so they wouldn't pick her but in the end, she says after an audition she says she knew she got the role. She also said that she hated making this film so much she wanted to quit acting

Well is she an idiot then? If she didn't want the film, maybe don't go to the auditions? Pull out of the role?

I like the realistic approach they went with in the remake, the cinematography and score were a plus too.

I am glad you pointed out the seriousness of the original movie. We always hear so much about Freddy being such a comedian and too goofy of a bad guy. However, in both the original and the first sequel he was nothing like that at all. His actions in the first movie only took a comical edge in his perspective, and those things were done to show how disturbed he was.

Foe example, when he chases Tina, Freddy has her watch him cut his fingers off and see the green liquid spurt out while he laughed. Nothing funny about it, he was just trying to scare the crap out of her.

It actually wasn't until "The Dream Master" that Freddy became a comedian. There were hints of it in "Dream Warriors" but that still had a serious tone for the most part.

The new Freddy does not have the edge the old Freddy had because Englund's Freddy LOVED being a "dream demon" so to speak. The new Freddy was a whiny baby who lamented what he had become.12

Yeah it amazes me how much people think Freddy was always a comedian. He is anything but that in the first 2 movies. He is pure evil and not cracking one liners. He is scary as hell in the first 2.

About JEH as Freddy, I love the fact he made it his own and I like how they brought back the serious vibe. I know most did not like it but I thought it was pretty damn good.

I recently decided to watch this version and I disagree. This movie explained way too much. I'll always prefer the original over this any day.

Uhh no its not better than the original; The original was miles better than this remake.

Heather Langenkamp acts circles around Rooney Mara (theres nor real comparisons there at all)

Robert Englund was is and always will be Kruger (although Jackie Earl Haley was pretty damn creepy)

the remake was fairly good and pretty entertaining, but it doesnt even compare with its classic predecessor.

As far as the sequels are concerned, i loved them too (my personal favorite of them all is Dream Warriors but thats me)

I liked both.

As much as I liked Robert Englund (and I do feel very disloyal for writing this) but I preferred JEH's deeper, slightly gravelly voice. The voice made for much of the creepy effect Freddy gave, whereas RE sounds too shrill, like a clown.

And holy crap the last scene with the mirror scared the bejesus out of me!

Nowadays it's jump scares and loud music that can be considered scary, and this is what other people think is serious.
Have you ever seen Halloween, the original, it wasn't always jump scares its more of a Psychological thriller/slasher. The same with the original Texas Chainsaw Masacre, or go watch Daria Argento Flicks. But if you were referring to it's shooting technique I don't know what to say.

Original Halloween is boring as hell. The remake is even worse (not due to it being boring)

I just watched this and thought it was on par with the original, it certainly wasn't a bad movie. I'm a fan of the orginal NOES and I really don't see how a person could like one and not the other because it's the same material. Both films were dark, serious and disturbing, and both Englund and Haley were scary. I actually found Haley to be creepier in a lot of ways, his look alone is scarier. Englund's Krueger at least looked like a normal human in the face despite the burns, but Haley looked far more gruesome. Bottom line this is a very worthy remake of a iconic horror film and it's better than all the crappy NOES 80s sequels by far with the exception of Dream Warriors.

I don't think it HAS to be better than or even on par with the original, it just has to be better than the majority of horror crap they're churning out these days. As far as post-2000 horror movies go, I though this was slightly better than average.

Rooney Mara is definitely more talented than Heather Langenkamp and she's even prettier. That was one area where this surpassed the original.

You've gotta be kidding Heather is waaaaaayyyyyy hotter than plain Jane looking Rooney Mara. If that's what passes for good looking today. Please take me back..

And oddly enough it made me laugh even more.

This movie is okay. But it's certainly NOT better than the original. FREDDY'S REVENGE, which is probably my least favorite of the Englund films, is better than this one.

I thought Freddys revenge was one of the better ones. Parts 4-6 were terrible and worse than the remake IMO.

You mean the male pornographic fantasy? I think not.

No, I am referring to the way Freddy looked and acted in the 2nd film. Its the only time he had the amber colored demonic eyes and the "male witch" look he had in the film. He was dark, not cracking lame one liners every other second.

Freddy was excellent in the second film.

It has some interesting ideas, but the execution is not handled well. I think the reason why this movie suffered is becuase of Samuel Bayer, he didn't care for the source material very much and hasn't really been at the top his game with his music video and commercial work in years. As far as I'm concerned Bay and co. should have gone to Chris Cunningham, his work is amazing from his shorts to music videos to commercials and he's still a visually fresh filmmaker. I also would've probably cast somebody else other than Mara as Nancy also, she just didn't really care for the material either it seemed.

I have an unbelievably long ignore list.

If by "shot more seriously", you mean "shot with a poor script that felt unfinished with bland direction and a cast that all gave poor performances other than Jackie Earle Haley", then sure, it was "shot more seriously."

This film doesn't hold a candle to the original. It barely holds a candle to the piece of crud that was Freddy's Dead.

You could "try" to make a claim that a movie only made because of a lack of creativity, a guaranteed profit and because a certain other horror classic remake managed to actually be good and reap in profits and generate a prequel (and later a faux sequel to the original) was made more seriously than the Nightmare sequels, but to even think that the piece of crap remake of the original Wes Craven A Nightmare on Elm Street, was better and more seriously shot, is an obvious sign that your mother should of had an abortion.
