Recommend me some fanatsy books…

Hey, was wondering if anyone could recommend me some good fantasy books or series, particularly ones that don't have too much war and violence. I really like some old cartoons from when I was a kid, like David the Gnome and The Littl' Bits, any sort of fanatsy that's more light, but not nessesarily kid exclusive.

Re: Recommend me some fanatsy books…

Watership Down, The Never Ending Story, both great fantasy books that are enjoyable to younger readers but actually seem written more for adults - you find more levels in them the older you get. Great books.

Re: Recommend me some fanatsy books…

I wouldn't really call Watership Down fantasy. It's about rabbits doing rabbit things. They're anthropomorphized yes, but far less than you might think. Also it gets pretty violent near the end.

Re: Recommend me some fanatsy books…

I second The Neverending Story - the book is fantastic and crying out for a new adaptation including all the bits that did not make it into the 80s films.

And talking of books with 80s adaptations, The Princess Bride novel is brilliant and very funny, highly recommended, and The Last Unicorn is really beautifully written and moving, one of my favourites.

The lute is the coolest of all medieval stringed instruments.

Ursula Le Guin
The Earthsea Trilogy

What is wanted is not the will to believe, but the will to find out, the exact opposite.

But that eliminates most of the good ones .

I would second HapHazzard's reccomendation of "Watership Down". I haven't read it, but I've heard good things about it and it sounds like the type of book you're looking for.

If you're looking for a series you might enjoy something like "The Spiderwick Chronicles". It's got trolls, goblins, elves and fairies. It's got a little "violence" but it's not quite as dark as "Harry Potter".

Re: Recommend me some fanatsy books…

Thanks for all the suggestions! Will definately look into these. I don't mind a little bit of violence and peril, but maybe I should have specified my dislike of medieval themed stuff with epic battle scenes. Just not my cup of tea. And I realise a lot of fantasy is like that, but that's why I asked. Thanks! :)

Re: Recommend me some fanatsy books…

There are a bunch of ebooks by new authors here: http://www.smashwords.com/ - some are free to download. Not many are violent, in particular Tamsin C Southwell has a great range.

Re: Recommend me some fanatsy books…

Terry Pratchett books

Re: Recommend me some fanatsy books…

At the moment I am reading the series A Song Of Ice And Fire, the first book in the series Game Of Thrones has been televised. I have ordered book four Feast for Crows from Amazon just waiting for the postman:)

I'm loving these books but they may not be what you are looking for, set in medieval times and loads of battles, blood, gore, lust, love:)

Re: Recommend me some fanatsy books…

You haven't lived till you've read the Enchanted Forest Chronicles. They're very humourous and light but cleverly written, a bit like Shrek in they poke fun at traditional fairy tales.

Re: Recommend me some fanatsy books…

You can't go wrong with Hans Christian Andersen. I always wanted to read The Snow Queen and once tried reading in the computer but gave up.

Re: Recommend me some fanatsy books…

David Eddings series: The Belgariad and then follow up with the Mallorean series.

Re: Recommend me some fanatsy books…

I agree with the David Eddings shout. Start with "The Belgariad" and work from there. There are some wars/battles, but it's never graphic, and the general tone of the books tend to be quite light.

I'd also recommend Philip Pullman's Dark Materials trilogy. Aimed at teenagers, they're an easy read, that you won't be able to put down 'til you finish...

Re: Recommend me some fanatsy books…

I too thought of Philip Pullman's Dark Materials triology when I read your post. Excelent serie that works just as well for teenagers as for adults.

Re: Recommend me some fanatsy books…

I'm reading the Spooks apprentice by Joseph Delaney, (or the Last apprentice if you are in America.) The series is also known as The Wardstone chronicles. They are written for older children but they are darker than I expected. An easy read and enjoyable. The first book in the series, Revenge of the witch has been made into a film coming out next year. It stars Ben Barnes (Prince Caspian) and Jeff Bridges. I'm excited to see it.
