The Whispers : The deaf thing was rediculous

The deaf thing was rediculous

The whole deaf thing really grated on my nerves. First of all, when you lose your hearing you DO NOT instantly and simultaneously lose the ability to SPEAK! Even people who have been deaf since birth can learn to speak. For someone who already knew how??? Um yeahNot buying it.

My other complaint I was willing to overlook. While the deaf community may be split on the use of cochlear implants, I can guarantee you they would have used one in this case. I guess that was kind of a minor thing and most people aren't going to think about it because they don't know what a cochlear implant is, but it irritated me. A kid who was born hearing, with hearing parents, who were not part of the deaf community or deaf culture would never have made the decision not to use one.

But yeahthe whole not talking thing because he lost his hearing was absolutely absurd. Then suddenly Drill fixes his hearing and omg it's a miracle..HE CAN TALK! Dude he already could.

It's true that some people who lose their hearing later in life choose to stop speaking. Often because they are embarrassed about how they sound. You can't tell how loud or how soft you are speaking when you can't hear yourself. You can't tell if your inflection is correct. However we aren't talking about an adult. We're talking about a child. There is just absolutely no way that supposedly intelligent and committed parents are just going to roll over and let their kid stop speaking. It's even more ridiculous given that Claire is supposedly an expert in child psychology and getting kids to communicate.

Even if he refused to speak, after 3 years he would have forgotten how. Even if Drill "fixed" him he would not INSTANTLY know how to speak PERFECTLY after not uttering a word for 3 YEARS!

The characters in this series, adult and children alike, constantly make decisions and do things no normal person would do, but the deaf thing irritated me the most. I felt kind of insulted that the creators of this show think I am so naive and gullible that I would believe this is how the world works. Are American audiences really that stupid? It's okay to make a series about something that doesn't make any sense in reality, but the characters still need to be at least somewhat representative of how supposedly intelligent and rational people would react in that situation.

Re: The deaf thing was rediculous

Agree w/OP. Show's terrible, I've said it before I'm just watching for Lily, who can do no wrong.

But, really? A malevolent force in the form of electricity? Ridiculous.

Re: The deaf thing was rediculous

But Drill isn't just an electrical being He can fix biological/neurological disorders, cause humans to lose memory, possess humans. I don't know what the science or rules are behind all of that. Please don't say that the nervous system is just another electrical network because it isn't

But I am surprised that the writers haven't yet exploited the Drill can hack computers and change information in database servers angle

Re: The deaf thing was rediculous

Point taken. I'm not really a science fiction fan and I'll admit I only really pay attention when Lily's on the screen. So I haven't even been following the story that closely. But I also agree they could explain that element of the story a little better.

The reason that Drill can fix nuerological issues is because the brain fires off electrical impulses and since Drill communicates through electricity that's why he can use the lights and be in the kids' heads. As far as the Drill being able to hack computers and get information thing, I imagine that will come up soon though it seems like Drill prefers to have others do his dirty work and if you refuse or piss him off you are punished. Like how Wes smack talked to Drill than Drill killed Lena to punish him and Minx because she stopped listening to him.

What's with the American bashing?

They're far more smarter than you think. They just understand that some things are sped up or combined for time.

Re: The deaf thing was rediculous

The not being able to speak, because he lost his hearing annoyed the hell out of me too.

Re: The deaf thing was rediculous

That isn't true. Everything you said isn't true. I know everything there is to know about hearing loss, due to the fact I will be 60 years old in October and have been wearing hearing aids since 1984 when I turned 29.

So here are the true facts:

Everything you said about hearing and hearing loss is totally wrong. If someone has a traumatic experience then they can lose their hearing and stop speaking. And if they regain it later on no they do not lose the ability to speak. If you are born deaf and then get cochlear implants then you have to be taught to speak properly. And no you do not get cochlear implants if someone just loses their hearing the way the boy did in the show.

Cochlear implants are only used for people who are completely deaf and never ever have hearing in their life.

I have never ever heard of someone not speaking because they lose their hearing due to the fact they hate the way their voice sounded. They may stop talking only because they cannot hear what the other person said so the deaf person shies away from speaking, but not because they dont like their voices.

And no there is no such thing as a deaf culture or community. I never heard of this either.

That does not make you an expert by any stretch of the imagination. "I was born a human, therefore I am an expert on humans" - doesn't make much sense, does it? "I was born in the United States, therefore I know everything there is to know about the United States" - sounds pretty damn stupid, doesn't it? Just because you have been hard of hearing for over 30 years, does NOT make you an expert.

I went to the American School for the Deaf. My uncle was the headmaster their for years. My aunt spent just about her entire life there (from the age of 5, until she died in her 70s). Much of what OP said resonated with me. The child's portrayal just seemed completely wrong to me - like they created him based upon assumptions, rather than research or consultation.

As to there not being deaf culture - make sure you let all these other deaf people, organizations, and experts know that they are wrong:

Re: The deaf thing was rediculous

Not true. I studied about hearing after I became hard of hearing. And you can think what you want to think

Re: The deaf thing was rediculous

HELLO! OP,I agree with you. People who have not been born deaf can still speak. This tired notion that people who are either born deaf or become deaf sometime after their birth, can not speak is insulting. And at worse sending out misinformation.

Re: The deaf thing was rediculous

I think the reason the writers made him mute was so that Claire would realize he was cured when he screamed at the authorities to leave his dad alone. This was the point that Claire realized Henry was also communicating with Drill.
