The Hateful Eight : Mannix got Smithers killed

Mannix got Smithers killed

The constant antagonizing of Warren by Mannix caused Warren to kill Smithers. Warren was aware of Mannix's admiration for Smithers, so he killed him out if spite. I'm sure Warren would have kept his tale of black Johnson's in white mouths under wraps if Mannix would have kept his mouth shut.

Re: Mannix got Smithers killed

The story of a entire captured negro troop regiment in uniform shot in cold blood by General Smithers was paramount in the confrontation that led to the 'self-defensive' killing. Warren almost killed him in a heated exchange until stopped by Oslwaldo.

That it upset Chris Mannix was just a bonus.

Now weather Warren would have recognized General Smithers is a different matter, but one can hardly blame Mannix for that.

Re: Mannix got Smithers killed

Of course you can blame Mannix. Right after the "Lincoln Letter" revelation, within a few seconds, Warren went directly to Smithers. Still fuming from Mannix's antics, he had to show Mannix that he wasn't to be F**led with. It was the split second AFTER the revelation when Warren went to Smithers that has me convinced.

Re: Mannix got Smithers killed

I think he just made up the whole black dingus story to get the general to pull his gun on him. That way he could lawfully kill him in self defense. Their encounter was purly by chance. And I think warren hated this guys with a passion and wanted a good excuse to kill him. Did he actually kill Chester Smithers? Maybe. Did he make him suck on his junk first. Probably not.

Re: Mannix got Smithers killed

This isn't a discussion on that story (Which was true. Most idiots are just to stupid to see the evidence. I'm sure they have their reasons from a psychological perspective for not wanting it to be true). This is about how Mannix's interaction with Warren caused the death of Smithers.

Re: Mannix got Smithers killed

As was said before, killing mannix' idol was just a bonus. Waren would have killed Smithers whether or not mannix was present. He was not about to overlook the generals role in killing African Americans in cold blood on the battlefield. And that footage was probably general Smithers just "seeing pictures". The story was obviously meant to hurt and piss him off.

Re: Mannix got Smithers killed

Mannix sped up the process based on what I saw. There was no evidence in this film that Warren was planning in killing Smithers except their first interaction when Warren reached for gun. He could have cooled after a few hours. And, by your logic, he was also planning on killing Mannix because of the actions of Mannix Marauders looting and killing black folks. Why would he only kill Smithers for his acts, but let the actions of the marauders slide?

Re: Mannix got Smithers killed

Maybe before the s$$t hit the fan and he needed him as an ally, warren did want to kill mannix. the problem was this: he got away with killing Smithers because he was able to kill him lawfully in self defense. Warren would have needed a similar situation to occur where he could lawfully kill mannix. But after seeing what happened to Smithers, mannix was not going to give him the opportunity.

Re: Mannix got Smithers killed

I don't see it. My point was, Warren killed Smithers to get back at Mannix. What I see was in black and white. What you're seeing is irrelevant things that's all over the place.

Re: Mannix got Smithers killed

I understand your viewpoint on this. It's true Warren almost killed Smithers upon realizing exactly who he was and what he'd done.

HOWEVER, Warren had calmed down considerably by the time everyone sat down to eat. Mannix revealing the true nature of the Lincoln letter tensed up Warren. Warren was upset, but knew he couldn't directly take it out on Mannix because Mannix hadn't done anything illegal to him. He also couldn't take the chance Mannix was telling the truth about being the sheriff of Red Rock.

It was classic displacement. Much like a man who has a bad day at work and comes home taking out his frustration on a spouse, Warren took out his frustration with Mannix on Smithers, except for the fact Smithers had it coming and couldn't command much sympathy (the most sympathy you can muster for him is in the moments before his death, assuming what Warren stated about his son was even remotely true).

Re: Mannix got Smithers killed

Soyou pretty much wrote what I wrote, but only better. You made it more clear than I could. I liked your verbalization of the whole incident.

Re: Mannix got Smithers killed

I see your point. It is possible but not foolproof. Because the theory is all based on the timing of the killing.

What we will NEVER KNOW is if Warren was planning to kill Smithers anyway.

If you believe Warrens story (which Smithers did) Warren would be smart to kill him. It stands to reason that Smithers knew (at least partially) what his son was up to before his death. Warren would have been a fool to let the old man live on the possibility that Smithers was playing dumb and knew (or would eventually figure out) that he killed Smithers son.

Put yourself in Warrens shoes, how comfortable would you feel being stuck for days in a cabin with the father of the son you killed?

Re: Mannix got Smithers killed

I don't think be planned on killing him. Mannix just gave Warren a reason to kill him. I'm sure he heard how buddy buddy Smithers and Mannix were getting (Warren has a nack for observing his surroundings. That's pretty much obvious). So, he decided to kill him out of spite.
