The End of the Tour : Other films about magazine writers?

Other films about magazine writers?

I absolutely adored this movie when I watched it last night. As a working and aspiring writer myself, I just found it absolutely fascinating. Anyone else know any other movies about this kind of protagonist/subject matter? I've seen and also love Almost Famous, and while not the same tone even slightly, Amy Schumer's character in Trainwreck is also a magazine profile writer. Anyone got anything else?

Re: Other films about magazine writers?

It's not specifically about a magazine writer, but Capote is really great about Truman Capote in the 50s trying to write a novel on grisly Kansas murders by spending years of his life using the 2 murderers for research. And another that's specifically an interviewer/subject piece but not set around magazines is Frost/Nixon

Re: Other films about magazine writers?

Given some flexibility here, I can name quite a few to see. Woody Allen's CELEBRITY is about a hapless writer assigned to do a profile on a debauched star, played mostly as comedy. Of course Billy Wilder's ACE IN THE HOLE aka THE BIG CARNIVAL is about an enterprising newspaper reporter who exploits his story. A FACE IN THE CROWD has a radio reporter played by Patricia Neal whose coverage of a local scoundrel accidentally creates a celebrity with an interest in politics. But if you are looking for an exact plot-match, where a sensitive guy gets to know another sensitive guy, of the literary type I'd suggest WONDER BOYS. Or perhaps MY DINNER WITH ANDRE, even. If you are liking the "brush with greatness" aspect, check out ME AND ORSON WELLES directed by Richard Linklater. If you just like the idea of two males on a road trip and bonding over cultural observations the list is endless but try Wim Wenders KINGS OF THE ROAD for starters. If you see this as a portrait of a generation, perhaps - which it functions somewhat as - I'd examine WHO'LL STOP THE RAIN for an example of two characters who are/were close and come to examine what makes them the same yet different. Films about what it is a writer does are difficult to make. Mostly they sit in a room and stare at an empty page. THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD tries to take on the loneliness of a pulp writer, and has a fine cast and some interesting moments. In addition to CAPOTE, mentioned above, a second film with the same topic was made called INFAMOUS that has a different take on the same material, which is interesting. It has a good cast and is well made, but was overshadowed by virtue of getting finished shortly after the other. Of course any discussion about writers cannot fail to recommend IN A LONELY PLACE and SUNSET BOULEVARD. FINDING FORRESTER is a mentor/prodigy plot, of which there are many but here the occupation is writing. Possibly one of my favorite films of all time is about a writer who returns home after a war, struggling with his sensitivity to the world, based on James Jones' post WW2 experiences: SOME CAME RUNNING, which is a must-see. Unlike many, I felt ON THE ROAD was well made, but if you want to see Kerouac and Cassidy played by better actors, seek out 1980's Heart Beat, with Nick Nolte, John Heard and Sissy Spacek. TOTAL ECLIPSE tells the story of Rimbaud and Verlaine. MRS PARKER AND THE VICIOUS CIRCLE does Dorothy justice. PRICK UP YOUR EARS is a two hander, one writer successful and the other still struggling. I''ve heard good things about KILL YOUR DARLINGS but have not yet seen it myself.

Almost Famous is one of my favorites as well. Here are some other movies I can think of involving some kind of publication:

- The People vs. Larry Flynt stars Woody Harrelson as the editor of a porn magazine.
- American Splendor stars Paul Giamatti as the writer of a comic book.
- Vanilla Sky stars Tom Cruise as an owner of a publishing firm.
- (500) Days of Summer stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel as writers at a greeting card company.
- Private Parts stars shock jock radio host Howard Stern as himself.
- The Late Shift (actually featured in The End of the Tour) is about late-night TV hosts David Letterman and Jay Leno.
- Man on the Moon stars Jim Carrey as comedian/actor Andy Kaufman and has a similar feel and themes to The End of the Tour and the other movies mentioned.
- Love & Mercy stars Paul Dano and John Cusack in the dual role of mentally-ill Beach Boys lead singer/songwriter Brian Wilson.
