How is the LGBT community is represented in American cinema?

How do you think the LGBT community is represented in American cinema?

Re: How is the LGBT community is represented in American cinema?

For the most part better than it has been for the last 60 years. It helps to have groups like GLAAD for one, who rewards and "disciplines" movies etc that do an injustice for gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgender and questioning. The internet has helped. The change of mainstream society's attitudes and the unfortunate AIDs epidemic ignited the changes. Imo we need to be shown as human - warts and all.

Re: How is the LGBT community is represented in American cinema?

Like the other poster said, it's better than it used to be. But imo there is still room for improvement.

One area that needs improvement is youth and family entertainment. It's difficult or impossible to find the LGBT community represented in these types of movies. The movie D.E.B.S. comes to mind. This film should have been rated PG for mild language (the Sh word was used) but instead it was rated PG-13 because it contained a same-sex relationship which included kissing and showing the two in bed together, but no nudity or sexual activity of any kind. If it had been a heterosexual couple, it would have been rated PG.

Re: How is the LGBT community is represented in American cinema?

I totally agree with you on the matter of same-sex couples somehow upping the rating of a film or television film -- what's the deal? Gay couples exist. How does that turn something from PG to PG-13?

Having said that, I was impressed to see that there was a lesbian couple on a Cartoon Network show intended for children. One of the kids on the show has two moms. In another episode, a female teacher is seen waiting at a restaurant for a blind date when a man appears. He glances around, and suddenly another man walks up and they embrace lovingly -- hearts appear and romantic music plays. Sure, really young kids probably won't get it, but the fact that it's even there is a pretty big step.

Re: How is the LGBT community is represented in American cinema?

They still stereotype. Most gay male characters are raging queens or at least slightly effeminate. And most lesbians are being used to titillate straight male movie goers. Someone mentioned D.E.B.S. That's a perfect example of an unrealistic representation of gay women designed for heterosexuals.

You gotsta make way for the Homo Superior

Re: How is the LGBT community is represented in American cinema?

I wouldn't say that D.E.B.S. was made for heterosexuals. You could say that about movies like Brokeback Mountain and The Kids Are All Right, but not D.E.B.S. which barely got any attention when it came out in theaters. In fact most theaters never even carried the movie.

And yes the entire movie is unrealistic. It's obviously not intended to be serious. But that doesn't mean that it's an unrealistic representation of gay women.

Re: How is the LGBT community is represented in American cinema?

Much more than before BUT very inaccurately...

These days gay or lesbians are portrayed at the most most, inteligent and perfect people...
We all know that´s not true...

Re: How is the LGBT community is represented in American cinema?

They're not really represented as a community, and that is probably what they prefer, given the emphasized distinctions among males and females, and cisgender and transgender persons. The "LGBTQ" concept is more so representative of an political alliance anyway.
