She died because she was denied a visa to get medical treatment.
Re: So this guy was happy to kill…
And we all know that some 70+ year old woman's death due to the fact that nobody in Europe could treat her fatal condition is a perfectly normal motive to kill the entire population of NYC because maybe, just maybe she could possibly have lived a few more years/months had her visa went through to the US.
Yep a totally believable motive. 3/10

Re: So this guy was happy to kill…
People kill for a lot less every day.
Re: So this guy was happy to kill…
Yeah, and terrorists usually have 'believable' motives, haven't they?
I find personal revenge a more rational motive than flying planes into scyscrapers and bombing trains because you want some phantasized superbeing to control the world.

Re: So this guy was happy to kill…
The thing is though personal revenge motives tend to be very direct and short sighted. His wife was denied a visa to the US, maybe he should have killed the screener who denied it since he happens to oversee that particular department. Or travel to the US building that deals with that sort of thing, customs or immigration, and go on a shooting spree. For him to do anymore than that asks the viewer to suspend disbelief far too much, to see a normal rational man become that of an Osama esque villain because of an unlucky event is too illogical imo.
Terrorists have much more believable motives to want to kill the entire pop. of NYC, they are highly delusional, ignorant and inherently violent characters that have been raised since birth to hate and despise us, blame us for every wrong in the world, so when you see a film portraying them as such extremists it's not a reach to believe in their motives, however absurd they are to us.

Re: So this guy was happy to kill…
They should have just stuck with the Islamic terrorists from the beginning, that would be more realistic.
Re: So this guy was happy to kill…
1m people because his wife didn't get a visa? I found the movie entertaining but ridiculous.
She needed it for a medical emergency/treatment and in not getting it she died. Yes he went to the extreme here seeking revenge but hey people if people can kill loads and loads of people for oil and far less important things then why can't this guy kill for this? Yes he was taking innocent lives in doing this but people do crazy stuff every single day. Do you remember a guy named Hitler? He killed Jews for no real good reason and wanted a master race. There just are bad people in this world and so the idea of this guy doing this in the movie is no more ridiculous than what I see done in the real world.
Re: So this guy was happy to kill…
I thought the real main villain was the third guy on the rooftop, the one who was going to reap $$ on the stock-market post blast, and that the chemistry guy was just a willing accomplice.
Re: So this guy was happy to kill…
I thought it ironic and moderately entertaining when The Watchmaker just shot him before shooting to explode the balloon thus denying him even the chance of watching his revenge be realized.
Life is a b!tch.
