Silent : Greed

Greed

Which is the best currently existing legal way to watch the 1924 film Greed

-Laserdisc
-VHS
-DVD from Spain
-itunes

Re: Greed

I have the laser disc and vhs versions of the 2 hour film and I also have a tape recorded off TCM of the "restored" footage that runs about 4 hours. They filled in a lot of the missing scenes with production stills to flesh out everything that had been scissored out of the movie.

About two years ago TCM ran a contest asking viewers to vote on what movie they wanted released to dvd. Greed was one of them, but it lost. I keep hoping for a dvd studio release of the movie, but my hopes are growing depressingly dim.

I've never heard of the dvd from Spain. Is it the 2 hour or the "restored" 4 hour cut. I know the movie so well it might not make a difference to me if the title cards are in Spanish. Is that version available in the US?

Re: Greed

I just can't bring myself to purchase Spanish version, just in case they release a US or UK special edition. I believe it's the 2 hour version.

The version I have I bought off ebay for 99p (& free postage) and is just the VHS version on DVD. In the UK there's a company called Eureka Masters of Cinema and I read an interview from one of their guys last month and he said something along the line, that the film he'd like to release most would be a complete version of 'Greed'. So maybe there is something in the pipeline...

I don't usually spend more than £5 or £6 on a DVD (not even silent ones well restored), but I would pay up to £30 for a special edition DVD set of Greed (or for any Erich von Stroheim film for that matter).

Re: Greed

The Eureka Masters of Cinema stuff is excellent.

Re: Greed

The 4-hour restored version was released on VHS, but not DVD for some reason. (I am speaking of the American release.)
