Re: great premise, not subversive or cynical enough
The beginning was the most interesting part.
Because you don't know what they are up to. You read on the preview that the family has a secret and are the envy of their neighbors.
At first I thought they were ripping of "The Riches" on FX.

Re: great premise, not subversive or cynical enough
I fully sgreem, expected a LaBute-esque or Todd SOlond-liek approach, would have been a great film. Decidedly average as it turned out.

Re: great premise, not subversive or cynical enough
I agree with the OP that it could have been a bit more darker and satirical. In the end they tone it down a bit even get sniffy dramatic.
Re: great premise, not subversive or cynical enough
I agree totally it would've been interesting as a darker film, but part of me really likes that it was kept light and fun. Maybe it's just because I went into it expecting the plot to take a really messed up turn at some point, more so than it did.
great premise, not subversive or cynical enough
i wish this material had been handled by david fincher or someone like that who could have it far more realistic but satirical
i would have liked to have seen the material deal more maturely and subtly with status anxiety and commodity fetishism
still, this was surprisingly entertaining, if entirely predictable
