Re: xXx: The Return of Xander Cage

Given all the talk about XxX destroying Bond, I was going to post a BO comparison thread once the movie opens. No way does it's opening top SF or Spectre.

Re: xXx: The Return of Xander Cage

Yeah, based on Thursday there are already predictions for the weekend.

And my old friend M. Night Shyamalan is making a comeback with SPLIT.

Re: xXx: The Return of Xander Cage - 22 January 2017

For the record Skyfall earned 170 mil. worldwide on its first weekend while Spectre also received over 100 mil.. The reports of the Bond franchise's demise were greatly exaggerated.

Re: xXx: The Return of Xander Cage

Verily I say unto thee...this is grossly unfair, the Bond franchise is clearly capable of spelling its own doom with no help from anyone else.

Well, that's not what you said about HAPPY FEET, HAPPY FEET 2, WRECK'EM RALPH, MI GHOST PROTOCOL, MI ROGUE NATION, JQHN QARTER, JASON BOURNE, and many others.

But spelling was never your strong suit.

Box Office: Vin Diesel's 'xXx: Return Of Xander Cage' Scores Boffo $20.3M Friday In China

Well, it looks like xXx: Return of Xander Cage could be that somewhat rare big movie that underperforms in North America yet gets "saved" by China. Obviously, this is just one day's worth of grosses, but the Vin Diesel action sequel just notched a whopping $20.3 million opening day in what is the second-biggest movie going market on the planet.

To wit, and with inflation and exchange rates potentially playing a factor, that's on par with the $18m opening day of Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation back in late 2015. Said Tom Cruise sequel, also courtesy of Paramount, notched a $135.6m total in China. Conversely, Spectre earned a $15m opening day but ended up with "only" $83.5m around the same time.

Paramount knew that its third xXx movie was a coin toss in North America, but the hope was that another racially/ethnically diverse action ensemble adventure starring Vin Diesel would break out in a manner (relatively speaking) not dissimilar to Furious 7 two years ago. That boffo action sequel earned a record-smushing $68m opening day in April of 2015 before legging it to a record-breaking (for a Hollywood release) $390m in China alone.

Now, for the record, Furious 7 also earned $350 million in North America yet xXx: Return of Xander Cage probably won't top $50m here. So the comparison isn't 100% accurate, but thus far xXx 3 is on course to be the kind of grindhouse action movie that outgrosses its North American total in its first weekend of Chinese play.

Using the standard math, with the presumption that this could go either way, we could be looking at a $60m weekend and (using the standard 2.17x weekend-to-final multiplier) a $131m total in said territory. Now this one could very well be leggier than usual, thanks to the Vin Diesel's fanbase and the fact that the film stars Donnie Yen (among others). If it plays like Spectre, it ends with $113m. If it plays like Rogue Nation, the xXx sequel ends its China run with $153m, or about what Kung Fu Panda 3 earned last year.

Combined with the rest of its worldwide grosses ($151 million worldwide-and-counting) would push the film over the $300m mark. Inflation notwithstanding, that would be better than the $277m worldwide cume of the first xXx back in 2002 and would be 3.5x its $85m production budget. Obviously, it may well do more than that (or less than that), as it still has to open in Japan and Poland on Feb. 24, but it just snagged the biggest opening day in China for a Hollywood import since Warcraft.

Speaking of which, even if the Vin Diesel/Donnie Yen/Deepika Padukone/Tony Jaa/Ruby Rose/Toni Collette/etc. sequel is as frontloaded as that video game fantasy ($46 million opening day, $220m total), it still gets to around $97m total. This one's story is not yet done, but if it does go nuts in China past a merely terrific opening day, we may get a sequel out of this one yet. And, considering that Return of Xander Cage was better than anticipated, there might actually be a relative market for the film and a return adventure for its ensemble cast. And if all that happens, a big reason why is because Revolution and friends kept that budget under $90m. But we'll see.
