Bond 25 Reportedly Eyes Series' First Female Director (Susanne Bier)

JAMES BOND 25 REPORTEDLY EYES
SERIES' FIRST FEMALE DIRECTOR IN
THE NIGHT MANAGER'S SUSANNE BIER

Plus, Bier's taking the helm could seriously tip the scales in Tom Hiddleston's campaign for the 007 role.
BY NICOLE CARPENTER

The Night Manager director Susanne Bier is one of a "handful" of names being considered to helm the next James Bond film.

According to RadioTimes, Bier is among producer Barbara Broccoli's favorites for the gig—a job that would make her the first woman to director a James Bond movie. If chosen, she'll take over for Sam Mendes, whose last Bond film was Spectre.

Last week, rumors emerged that The Night Manager star Tom Hiddleston was in talks to replace Daniel Craig as Bond. And if Bier takes over, it certainly tips the scale in the actor's favor. However, Broccoli reportedly also met with Fantastic Four actor Jamie Bell for the title role.

Craig is rumored to have turned down almost $100 million to play Bond for two more movies.

There's been no shortage of actors willing to take his place. The X-Files actress Gillian Anderson also showed interest in playing James—or Jane—Bond.

Nicole is a freelance writer for IGN who would happily take
$100 million to play James Bond. Or less, you know.

Re: Bond 25 Reportedly Eyes Series' First Female Director (Susanne Bier)

Well the Night Manager was very well shot, and particularly the second episode, set in Spain looked very Bondian.

Not a huge amount of action though, and a capable action director is a must after the slow and steady action approach of Mendes, and the ridiculous flash cutting of Forster.

Re: Bond 25 Reportedly Eyes Series' First Female Director (Susanne Bier)

The violent content of "The Night Manager" was well handled and the director was not frightened of such content as was the case with the wholly inappropriate Marc Forster who I doubt had ever seen an action film in his life prior to being hired for what was meant to be one. Bier filmed the fight scenes in "The Night Manager" well and as those fight scenes were more brutal than would be allowed in a Bond film I wish her well if she is selected.

Re: Bond 25 Reportedly Eyes Series' First Female Director (Susanne Bier)

It's time for a female main villain, too. Elektra is the closest we've gotten to having one, but Bond fights Renard last, not her.

Anyway, Sigourney Weaver gets my vote.

Re: Bond 25 Reportedly Eyes Series' First Female Director (Susanne Bier)

Wait, Bond fought Hans, Mr. Wint, Tee Hee, Nick Nack, Jaws...last. Are we getting many of the main villains wrong?

Now, this is a signature gun, and that is an optical palm reader.

Re: Bond 25 Reportedly Eyes Series' First Female Director (Susanne Bier)

Let me clarify my poorly explained comment: Throughout the film, Renard is consistently presented as more than a henchman, and the character is obviously explored to greater depth than a henchman would ever merit. On that basis, accepting that he, like Elektra, is a candidate to be called main villain (something that can't be claimed for Tee Hee, Nick Nack, Stamper, etc.), the fact he dies after her (the last of the two) is significant: in terms of dramatic beats, he is treated as the main villain, I think. In fact, in the climactic scene, he is the main catalyst of the threat of nuclear destruction. That can't be said for Hans, Jaws, etc., who act more as obstacles in Bond's path, trying to stop him from saving the world or sleeping with the girl.

At any rate, in my opinion, Elektra is not a clear cut main villain, and it would be nice to finally see a woman playing that role. Preferably, it should be someone older than Bond.

Re: Bond 25 Reportedly Eyes Series' First Female Director (Susanne Bier)

Yeah, I took your post that way.

I'm motivated by my Duty.

Re: Bond 25 Reportedly Eyes Series' First Female Director (Susanne Bier)

I know I was just joshin'.

Though, to be serious, the twist that he was really doing her bidding would not have been such a twist if he wasn't really doing her bidding though it turned out, he was really doing her bidding.

Thus, the main villain was set by word of god, no matter how the story treated anyone in order to set up twists.

Now, this is a signature gun, and that is an optical palm reader.

Re: Bond 25 Reportedly Eyes Series' First Female Director (Susanne Bier)

Sorry to hear you disagree mac. However, I do think Bigelow was in the same class of directors they were considering and in talks with during the early to mid-90s. Ted Kotcheff, Roger Spottiswoode, Renny Harlin, John Landis, and John Woo all came up. I would like to have seen what John McTiernan could have done with the series.

Dalton and Craig! Accept NO substitutes!

Re: Bond 25 Reportedly Eyes Series' First Female Director (Susanne Bier)

What's wrong with Kathryn Bigelow? She's a great director who has tackled several genres. I think she has it in her to do a great Bond movie.

Who says violence is not the answer?

Re: Bond 25 Reportedly Eyes Series' First Female Director (Susanne Bier)

An interesting choice. Bier has stated she would go Van Gogh and cut off her ear for the chance to direct a Bond film. I have no qualms with this candidate.

I sort of think a female director is overdue. I thought Kathryn Bigelow should have been courted way back when for GoldenEye.

MATTHEW VAUGHN

Re: Bond 25 Reportedly Eyes Series' First Female Director (Susanne Bier)

Absolutely! Vaughn, along with Nolan, are two directors I really want to see take a crack at a Bond film.

Dalton and Craig! Accept NO substitutes!

Re: Bond 25 Reportedly Eyes Series' First Female Director (Susanne Bier)

Gender doesn't matter, talent does. If The Night Manager is any indication( haven't seen it yet but here it's great) give her a shot.

Who says violence is not the answer?

Re: Bond 25 Reportedly Eyes Series' First Female Director (Susanne Bier)

Who cares?

It's time to stop worrying about the first gender/race/whatever to do this or that.

Get over it already.

Re: Bond 25 Reportedly Eyes Series' First Female Director (Susanne Bier)

No one is worried. It is a discussion.

Whether you care or not, it is good for Bond 25. It brings the film more attention and potentially more business. There was a lot of hoopla when Judi Dench was cast as the first female M. It garnered GoldenEye more attention and possibly more ticket sales.

Granted, one should not be hired solely based on their gender. This does not appear to be stunt hiring. They are going on the merits of talent and vision. If a female director is hired then it is a selling point and first for the series. So then it should be heralded and hyped. #bestforbusiness.

Re: Bond 25: Guy Ritchie in Talks to Direct Bond Film

The 48-year-old star is currently in Los Angeles
where he is set to hold talks with producer Michael Wilson.

BANG Showbiz | about 9 hours ago
LOS ANGELES - Guy Ritchie has reportedly flown to Los Angeles for discussions with Bond producers.

The 48-year-old star is currently in Los Angeles where he is set to hold talks with producer Michael G Wilson about taking over the franchise from Sam Mendes.

A source told Mirror.co.uk: "Guy has moved up the shortlist and is now the front runner. He's meeting Michael this week to try to do a deal and see if they can agree on a shared vision for the film.

"Guy is under serious consideration for Bond 25 and this LA trip should help take this further. He doesn't have Sam's artistry, but Guy is a fast-paced, stunt-based director who knows his stuff.

"He also has on his side the ability to keep calm and balance a big budget."

Sam has directed Skyfall and Spectre in the long-running spy franchise but revealed in May that he will not return for another movie as he wants to work on something new.

He said: "It was an incredible adventure, I loved every second of it. But I think it's time for somebody else. I'm a storyteller. And at the end of the day, I want to make stories with new characters.

"I can guarantee whatever happens with it, it will not be what you expect. That's what she [producer Barbara Broccoli] has been brilliant at, and that's how it'll survive."

Meanwhile, Ralph Fiennes - who plays Bond's MI6 handler M in the franchise - recently argued that the next director needs to offer a different "tone and argument".

He said: "Well I think if you're the next director of Bond, you're going to not want to go down the tone and argument of what Sam [Mendes] has put into the films.

"Questions of British nationhood, and whether Bond is a dinosaur, all that. So I would guess if you're coming to do the next Bond, you'd want to take it somewhere radically different, I think."

Re: Bond 25: Guy Ritchie in Talks to Direct Bond Film

Man from UNCLE was a great "practice Bond" film. Wouldn't have a problem with him doing it. I never believe these things, though.

Re: Bond 25: Guy Ritchie in Talks to Direct Bond Film

Honestly I'm not to keen on Ritchie. I really liked his early work (Lock, Stock and Snatch) and after a few duds RocknRolla was a good return to form. However since then we've had his Sherlock Holmes and Man From UNCLE which I found to be quite underwhelming.

Susanne Bier was mentioned previously and I find her a much more interesting choice, not because she's a woman but because she delivered a great spy thriller with The Night Manager.

It takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place.

Re: Bond 25: Guy Ritchie in Talks to Direct Bond Film

Agree: I thought UNCLE demonstrated why he'd be a terrible director for Bond - the film drags, the action scenes are botched, the villains scheme is never explained (perhaps they don't even have one), the characters misjudged and it plays like one of those GQ or Vanity Fair fashion shoots where they get celebrities to dress up as their favourite film stars to re-enact scenes from old movies. The fact the film was in post-production Hell for nearly two years with reshoots and re-edits to try to fix it as it went overbudget isn't much of a recommendation either.

Since the real reason he's in LA is apparently the ongoing problems with his much-delayed King Arthur film, and since EON is based in the UK, I'd take the story with a pinch of salt.

"Security - release the badgers."

Re: Bond 25: Guy Ritchie in Talks to Direct Bond Film

Apart from the pinch of salt, I watched UNCLE without even consciously thinking about it as being a Guy Ritchie movie. But I enjoyed it without further analysing it in detail. Perhaps a recipe for the next Bond film in that regard.

Re: Bond 25: Guy Ritchie in Talks to Direct Bond Film

If it is all the complaints about the villains' scheme would be replaced by complaints about how the villains don't have one. Aside from stealing a nuclear warhead, which they seem to have no plans to actually use, no target in mind, no demands to make and no ticking clock for the heroes to race against, that is.

"Security - release the badgers."

Re: Bond 25: Guy Ritchie in Talks to Direct Bond Film

I'm all with you to the extent that I forgot all about the plot in UNCLE in the meantime (which is normal after about half a year for me. I couldn't tell you off-hand the plot of any, say, Mission Impossible movie for the life of me. So I don't really need new movies, I can simply watch old ones again and be mesmerized. Practical, isn't it?).

Anyway, who's saying that a Ritchie-directed Bond movie necessarily has the same shortcomings? With a simplistic script, you could succeed in reviving Hitchcock and not turn it into a good movie (OK, he would probably refuse to direct it).

Re: Bond 25: Guy Ritchie in Talks to Direct Bond Film

Since he insists on co-writing his films when it's really not one of his strengths these days, it's a fair bet he'd focus on the style and throw out even the elementary plot mechanics. His two most successful films are still the only ones he didn't write.

Re: Bond 25: Guy Ritchie in Talks to Direct Bond Film

I'd like to see a Guy Ritchie Bond film. Definitely has what it takes.

Re: Bond 25: Guy Ritchie in Talks to Direct Bond Film

The GUy RItchies of the late 1990's I would love to see do a Bond film;but the guy who gave us the Sherlock Holmes movies and the Man From Uncle not so much. RItchie has turned into a hack ,sadly.

Re: Bond 25: Guy Ritchie in Talks to Direct Bond Film

I agree. Not that I didn't enjoy The Man From Uncle, but it was too much of an action-packed film to be a decent spy thriller, in my opinion. I prefer a "game of minds" be present in a film, as spies and their enemies are good at psychological manipulation. The last scene from The Man From Uncle, where Victoria dies from the missile, I thought that was scripted well. (Because he baits her with notifying her of her husband's death, then follows it up with gaining the upper hand in the conversation.) - https://youtu.be/SofVkTXvPYw

https://youtu.be/S39paDGZ0Ew
This is psychology at its best. This is textbook Bond. Generally I'd be willing to say that Ritchie's better films are the ones he didn't write, but I think he can do it.

Re: I want to direct a James Bond film - Leila Djansi

Fat chance, I'm afraid. Then of course Ghana is at least a member of the Commonwealth, and she's not asking to play James Bond, but just to direct.

SAM MENDES DROPS HIS GAY TALESE 'VOYEUR'S MOTEL' FILM.
COULD HE BE RETURNING TO JAMES BOND?

BY TUFAYEL AHMED ON 11/24/16 AT 4:40 AM

Director Sam Mendes’ next project has been shaken (not stirred) by controversy,
but could it mean a return to the James Bond franchise?

The British filmmaker revealed to Deadline Wednesday that his planned adaptation of Gay Talese’s book The Voyeur’s Motel has been dropped after discovering there is a definitive documentary about the story already made.

Talese’s book is about Gerald Foos, a motel owner in Colorado, who admitted to peeping on guests while staying at his motel—observing them during intimate sex acts.

Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks production company bought the rights to the book and Mendes intended to direct a script by Krysty Wilson-Cairns.

However, Mendes said he recently found out that Talese, who observed Foos’ voyeurism, and the motel owner were being filmed for a feature-length documentary by filmmakers Myles Kand and Josh Koury. Upon watching it, he has determined that the doc tells the story perfectly—leaving little need for a fictional account of events.

“The only point of doing a dramatization on something that has had a fine documentary made of it, is if you feel you can give an audience access to things they don’t have in the documentary,” he told Deadline. “I didn’t feel that is the case here, and that it is the other way around. The documentary was giving us access to things that no dramatized account could ever achieve.”

Mendes said he was “surprised” that no one mentioned the documentary when he and Spielberg acquired the rights to the book for DreamWorks. He said it was a “frustrating” situation “because we feel, to a degree, that we wasted our time. That does not feel great, but it’s what happened. It’s a very, very unusual situation I don’t think any of us anticipated.”

It is the latest controversy around Talese’s book; in July, the author and respected journalist disavowed it after The Washington Post ran a story about factual inaccuracies in Foos’ story. He later backtracked on his comments and the July 12 release of the book went ahead as planned.

So, now that there is a space wide open in Mendes’ work schedule, it begs the million-dollar question: will he and Daniel Craig reunite for a third Bond movie?

The director’s acclaimed Skyfall and Spectre are among the 50-year-old franchise’s highest-grossing releases.

Craig’s participation in what would be his fifth Bond film has been the subject of tabloid speculation this year. In September, it was reported the actor was offered $150 million for two more films—a theory he debunked, saying “there’s no conversation going on.” He did express interest in returning, however. (Co-star Naomie Harris told Newsweek she really wants him to return, too.)

As for Mendes’ participation, Deadline asked the director if Craig had called him to come back. Mendes initially planned to direct just one film, 2012’s Skyfall but was later lured back by Craig for last year’s Spectre.

“I think you’re going to have to ask… I don’t think anyone’s getting a call from Daniel Craig until he opens in Othello [at the New York Theatre Workshop], which is his entire focus,” Mendes said.

The director revealed that even though The Voyeur’s Motel movie is off, he still has a full slate of projects including directing Jez Butterworth’s play The Ferryman at the Royal Court Theatre in London next year.

Tom Hardy says Christopher Nolan should direct Bond 25
JANUARY 16, 2017 BY ROBERT KOJDER LEAVE A COMMENT

Casting the next James Bond isn’t the only task on the agenda for the producers of the 007 franchise, as Skyfall and Spectre director Sam Mendes has decided to pass on the torch and see what other filmmakers can do with the property for Bond 25. And, according to Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road), the heavy crown should next lie on his Inception, The Dark Knight Rises and Dunkirk director, Christopher Nolan.

“You know, there’s a saying amongst us in the fraternity of acting, and in the fellowship of my peer group, that if you talk about it you’re automatically out of the race, ” said Hardy when asked by The Daily Beast if he’d be interested in the role of Bond. “So I can’t possibly comment on that one! If I mention it, it’s gone. But Chris Nolan, what a fantastic director for a Bond movie. Because Daniel Craig is so good, and what Sam Mendes and Barbara Broccoli have done has been so impressive, that it would be a very hard re-imagination to follow after. I wonder what the next installment of that franchise would become, and I think when you mention someone like Christopher Nolan, that’s a very powerful figure to bring into that world who could bring something new and create something profound…again.”

The jury is still out on whether Daniel Craig will return or not, but for now let us know what you think of Christopher Nolan as a candidate to direct Bond 25…

Re: Bond 25: Tom Hardy says Christopher Nolan should direct

Decent together in Inception, I'd say that they would make a hell of a duo for a Bond film.

Re: Bond 25: Tom Hardy says Christopher Nolan should direct

I dont want Nolans cult around a Bond film.

Re: Bond 25: Tom Hardy says Christopher Nolan should direct

Yeah, I'd guess the chance of either one happening approaches less than zero.

But boy, that Nolan cult could really brighten up the Bond Board ever after.

What no man Can give ya. And none Can take away.

Re: Bond 25: Tom Hardy says Christopher Nolan should direct

Hardy as Bond as close to zero.

But I think Nolan directing is one of the most likely candidates you can throw out there.

My vote is still for Vaughn. And that means something because we all know Babs and Michael come on these boards to see what we say.

Re: Bond 25: Tom Hardy says Christopher Nolan should direct

Vaughn would be a hugely contentious choice because he's such an unpopular figure in the British film industry after persuading Jeremy Hunt (currently causing a Humanitarian crisis in the NHS as Health Secretary but then in charge of media) to shut down the UK Film Council, killing off a number of British pictures in the process - and then boasting about it in an interview in the Daily Mail. Some of the British cast of X-Men actually tried to break their contracts rather than work with him at the time, something he condescendingly dismissed by saying actors were too stupid to know what was good for them. It's dubious whether his reputation locally has been rehabilitated enough in the meantime. Add to that his tendency to drop out of pictures like Thor at the last minute (supposedly to spend more time with his family but not entirely unrelated to his wanting a $300m budget) and his going overbudget on First Class, which would put a question mark over his reliability in a franchise that doesn't need any more chaos added to the mix.

Re: Bond 25: Tom Hardy says Christopher Nolan should direct

Did you just cite Daily Mail?

Re: Bond 25: Tom Hardy says Christopher Nolan should direct

I cited the fact that not only is Vaughn a Mail reader but chose that organ to justify - nay, actually boast about his actions and belittle his actors. Well, he is a pal of Jeremy Rhyming Slang, so it makes sense...

Bond 25: John Wick 2 Director Wants to Take on Bond (Chad Stahelski)

Director Wants to Take on James Bond EXCLUSIVE
RYAN SCOTT | 2 days ago

The James Bond franchise is currently in a place of relative uncertainty. Daniel Craig may or may not come back to do another movie, but Sony definitely wants him to. Even if he does, it has already been established that director Sam Mendes, who did both Skyfall and Spectre, won't be returning to the director's chair for James Bond 25. That means someone will have to fill those shoes and John Wick director Chad Stahelski would be interested in taking the job.

I recently had the chance to speak with Chad Stahelski, who directed Lionsgate's John Wick and the upcoming John Wick: Chapter 2. There are clearly some parallels between the John Wick franchise and the James Bond franchise. When asked if he would be interested in directing a James Bond movie in the future, he seemed very interested, assuming the producers were interested in his take on it. Here is what he had to say about it.

"I'm interested in projects where you can world create. To jump back into somebody else's world where it's already been around for so long would be scary. But if there was one property, that wouldn't be a bad one to try and invest yourself. Especially because of the ebb and flow of the Bond universe right now, I think the timing is good for a slight reinvention with a different perspective shift. Bond has gone from completely serious to totally cheeky to really fun again, to emotional, to serious, to internal, to external. I would love to give the pitch and if they got my wacky version of it, and it fit, yeah. That's almost a dream too big."

There are no franchises that can match that of James Bond in terms of longevity and ability to adapt from decade to decade. As Chad Stahelski points out, the franchise has gone through many different iterations, from the classic seriousness of the Sean Connery era to the silliness of the Roger Moore era, all of the way up to the modern, gritty Daniel Craig take on 007. Assuming Daniel Craig does step down, and at best he will probably do one more movie, the James Bond franchise will once again be in a transition period. That could be the perfect time for a guy like Chad Stahelski to step in and change things up a bit.

Not only that, but anyone who has seen John Wick and once more people see John Wick: Chapter 2, it will be very clear that there is almost nobody working today that can execute action like Chad Stahelski can. His years of working as a stuntman have served him well in that respect. Also, John Wick is more than just empty thrills. There is a lot of world building there as well. With a new James Bond, there would be a need to rebuild that world a bit. Since the most recent movies have been pretty serious, doing a "wacky" version of James Bond, as Chad Stahelski put it, could be a nice change of pace.

At the immediate moment, Chad Stahelski is attached to direct the Highlander reboot, which is reportedly going to be a trilogy. And assuming John Wick: Chapter 2 does well at the box office, there is a strong possibility that John Wick 3 could happen. Plus, there is talk of doing a prequel TV series. That being the case, he will probably be busy for a little while. However, if Daniel Craig comes back for one or two more movies, Chad Stahelski could step in after that and be the guy to manage the transition when the next actor takes over as 007. As for who that could be, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, Jamie Bell, Tom Hardy and Michael Fassbender have all been rumored for the part, in addition to other, lesser known actors like Aiden Turner. Maybe the timing won't work out and maybe he won't make it onto Sony's radar, but Chad Stahelski seems like a guy who could definitely make a great James Bond movie and perhaps most importantly, he's interested in doing it.

Re: Bond 25: John Wick 2 Director Wants to Take on Bond (Chad Stahelski

I just saw John Wick. I was not impressed with the film. It felt like a hollow violent video game. A revenge flick without the charm or fulfillment of past action films. However, I will probably still see Wick 2. I had no idea it had a strong fandom.

Stahelski, is great at shooting fighting scenes. I have to give credit where it is due. Keanu, at 50, pulled it off admirably and Stahelski did not use any disgusting shaky cam.

Initially, I would not be super thrilled over the idea of Stahelski but he certainly is not the worst possible choice.
