Harry Potter : Was Dumbledore really gay?

Was Dumbledore really gay?

Or did Rowling just decide to make him that way to satisfy a PC world?

Re: Was Dumbledore really gay?

I think he was intended to be gay all along, and the fact that it wasn't "the" characteristic about him is what makes it that much better.

Re: Was Dumbledore really gay?

Gotcha. I was just asking because I would call it stupid for a writer to make that kind of change to a character just to serve the demands of the audience, who does not own the rights and should not really have a say in how the story goes, whether they are fans or not.

Re: Was Dumbledore really gay?

I don't think that's happened here. She was asked if there were any gay characters and she really could have gone with anybody if she wanted, not just Dumbledore . There were plenty of characters, good and evil, that she could choose to make gay (McGonagall, Charlie Weasley, Colin Creevey, Dudley, Umbridge, anybody really), if fan service was really the goal. Given how much backstory she wrote for all of the major characters before she ever really put pen to paper on the first book, it's not difficult for me to believe that she always thought of Dumbledore as being gay and having an unrequited love for Grindelwald. I don't think it ever went beyond that, though. She just wrote him to be a great character who happened to be gay, and not a gay character that was hopefully great. There is a difference.

For instance, if you were around when Ellen De Generes came out, it was a big deal. As much as I love Ellen, her show went off the rails with all of the gay and lesbian talk (even Chaz Bono, who was at that time still Chastity, said that it was a little much). They took a halfway decent show with halfway decent characters and just made it all about their interactions with those in the LGBT community. People lost interest because the show wasn't offering anything that they could try to relate to. In comparison, Spin City had a character who was gay, it was known that he was gay, it was out in the open, but it wasn't his defining trait. And that show went on forever.

So I'm pretty certain it wasn't fan service and the revelation was well done. Dumbledore was, for all intents and purposes, a normal human being. Flawed, brilliant, well-liked, criticized, complex, and he happened to be gay.

Re: Was Dumbledore really gay?

Yes he was always gay. it's obvious when you go back to Deathly Hallows and read about Grindlewald and him.

To you, Baldrick, the Renaissance was just something that happened to other people, wasn't it?

Re: Was Dumbledore really gay?

Clearly the answer to that is no. They both have female love interests throughout the saga.

TONS he says. Lists three.

I just never bought into that concept, and even though there have to be people out there who DO do that, it is not the case in Harry Potter.

Re: Was Dumbledore really gay?

That is what she said but there is no mention at all in the movies, and I even doubt in the books if they said he was or wasn't

Re: Was Dumbledore really gay?

I honestly wasn't all that surprised when I found out. I actually felt slightly validated because I found myself wondering if he was gay and had had feeling for Grindewald when I was reading DH.

Once upon a time there was a magical place where it never rained. The end.

Re: Was Dumbledore really gay?

It was very obvious to me while reading Deathly Hallows.

Re: Was Dumbledore really gay?

It perfectly fits Dumbledore's personality as well.

He dresses rather 'eccentric' even for a wizard, he tears up when he hears music, and is overall a very jolly character

Re: Was Dumbledore really gay?

Well, he did like to go out with a poof..

Re: Was Dumbledore really gay?

With the exception of the few couples who were obviously attracted to one another, I pretty much saw the adult characters as asexual or unsexual, ie there was nothing in their actions to state what sexual qualities or attractions they might (or might not) have.

Why does it matter anyway?

Re: Was Dumbledore really gay?

Eh, it's like most of the teachers I had as a kid. I didn't have a single attractive female teacher so I never thought of them in a sexual way so didn't care if they were married or not, they were just my teachers.

What's odd is there is no reason to make Dumbledore gay, and at no point does his sexuality matter or come up. She could say all the characters are bisexual but just lean towards opposite sex. So maybe Harry and Ron had a crush on each other but didn't go all the way. It doesn't affect the story but gay people will squeal and jump up and down and clap their hands.

It doesn't matter but people will pretend it has a deeper meaning.

Re: Was Dumbledore really gay?

Re: Was Dumbledore really gay?
