Star Wars: The Force Awakens : John Boyega's performance

John Boyega's performance

Didn't notice it as much in the theater but rewatching it in Starz. Horrible acting. Couldn't they have found another actor to play Fin?

Re: John Boyega's performance

he's a very fine actor, dude, it's the director and the awful script by Jar Jar Abrams. Try to play the tragic child soldier, who is really a cowardly fool, and who turns out to be the janitor, and who is always bested by MaRey Sue or gay Poe. Try saying lines like "droid, please" or "got a boyfriend, cute boyfriend", "Im in charge, I am in charge now Phasma" etc with some integrity, you just can't...It's a fraking farce.

Re: John Boyega's performance

LOL. Too True.

I remember him being all right in "Attack the Block"

But this was embarrassing.

Re: John Boyega's performance

I remember him being all right in "Attack the Block"
I want to see that. The only other thing I've seen him in is Half of a Yellow Sun, and there really wasn't much of him to see. He was like a grown man stuck in a philandering thirteen-year-old boy's part. It seems like he might be typecast in morally questionable parts too.

Re: John Boyega's performance

i have a few issues with how he was written but i quite like the actor.

imo

Re: John Boyega's performance

Boyega was an ugly embarrassment actually--just a step above Jar Jar Banks, they made a huge mistake in not only casting him, but also in not even letting him speak in his normal British Accent--so dumb

Re: John Boyega's performance

Boyega was an ugly embarrassment actually
He's certainly no Aml Ameen, Chadwick Boseman, Trevor Jackson or Ashton Sanders. But had any of them taken the part, he'd be ruined.

Re: John Boyega's performance

I thought he did as much as an actor could, with the material he was given. His Finn was constantly thinking on his feet and trying to cope with a world other people understood and he didn't, I thought he was funny and likeable.

And if he turned out to have been in "sanitation" rather than a crack combat troop, I tend to think it was because he hated fighting and deliberately failed whatever tests they use to determine who goes into the crack combat troops. Because of that assumption, I admire him for having the job he did, I don't see it was a failure or a mark of inferiority.

Re: John Boyega's performance

Maybe he is, but after this performance I'm not exactly rushing out to see his other work.

Re: John Boyega's performance

Same here--I was going to go see Pacific Rim II but now have second thoughts since they cast him in it

Re: John Boyega's performance

His acting was fine.

Re: John Boyega's performance

He sucked, no interest in seeing him act like that again, he needs better writing, but there's nothing anyone can do about his looks

Re: John Boyega's performance

You already said that. It's been noted.

Re: John Boyega's performance

The whole cast sucks. That *beep* Nazi General, his speech was like nails on a chalkboard.

Boyega tends to overact like he's in a Tyler Perry movie. Ridley can't act, period. Jar Jar Abrams said her acting is wooden (I'm surprised he noticed) and he used her anyway because he's an equally *beep* director.

How is it in this day and age, with Hollywood is where it is, with limitless talent pool to choose from...

Charlie Chaplin scene is better:

Re: John Boyega's performance

It's Chaplin, of course it's better than almost everything, but that scene in TFA was atrocious

even equiped with a shovel and you couldn't dig this

Re: John Boyega's performance

His performance was superb. The character he portrayed was atrocious. He pulled off an American dialect wonderfully. He was funny. But again, Finn would've been crap no matter who portrayed him, and the humor was kind of takes one out of the movie, making it feel like a parody.

Couldn't they have found another actor to play Fin?
Like whom? Jonah Hill? Simon Pegg? Chaning Tatum? Chris Pine? Tom Holland? Chris Pratt? Paul Rudd? Like them, but with a lower profile? I'd agree that Boyega should've gotten into shape for the part. We could tell that he was kind of chubby and not a believable soldier for a number of reasons.

Re: John Boyega's performance

I thought he gave a phenomenal performance. He brought back the spirit of ROTJ in my opinion.. without him the movie would have been pretty bland.

Re: John Boyega's performance

Hmmmm another band of rebels who just state anything against the grain.

Boyega has been universally praised for his performance as Finn and rightly so.

Re: John Boyega's performance

OK, in what way did he bring back ROTJ's spirit? Serious question.

Re: John Boyega's performance

He's OK. It's not like Star Wars was highly regarded for the actor's performances to begin with, and after the prequels even Tommy Wiseau's acting would be more than acceptable for a Star Wars movie.

Re: John Boyega's performance

Don't know about that. I thought Riz Ahmed was great in Rogue One, and so was Felicity Jones. Also recently rewatched 4-6, (unf. the Lucas trashed one, couldn't find my laser disks and player), and when Yoda dies, Mark Hamill actually does really well. His facial expressions with a camera right there must have been hard to pull off but you could see the regret, the sorrow and resignation. There is some good acting in the series.

I agree Boyega and Ridley were bland, and that a portion of that came from the script. I rated TFA a five, which broke my heart. There was just too much wrong with it.

Re: John Boyega's performance

John Boyega's acting ability in and of itself is fine. Unfortunately, he was forced to play a slapstick comedy relief runaway slave sidekick.

It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing .

Re: John Boyega's performance

He seemed to be playing like a human version of Jar Jar.

Re: John Boyega's performance

Agree OP, Boyega's acting was pretty bad indeed, and I still can't believe that they couldn't find a better looking black actor than him

Re: John Boyega's performance

I've heard he was good in Attack the Block (I haven't seen it) but I agree he was awful in this. I thought he did a good job with the accent but that's it.

Re: John Boyega's performance

I finally saw this on STARZ last night for the first time. I hated Boyega's character. I agree with other posters who said it was the writing that ruined Fin, not the actor. The comedy was awful, and why did they have to go the extra mile of revealing that he was a sanitation worker? That was just too much. I don't think any actor could have brought justice to this poorly conceived character. I was hoping he would die before the film ended, but apparently he hangs in there to be in the next film. Let us hope his role is reduced like Jar Jar Binks got reduced in the prequel sequels. His character doesn't work.

I am not a fan. I just happen to enjoy movies. Fans are embarrassing.

Re: John Boyega's performance

He was the black guy, right?

Re: John Boyega's performance

Couldn't they have found another actor to play Fin?

If they got a nearly ok actor to play that role, then it would have shown all the rest of the cast to be bad actors

Maybe thats just coincidence and they had to be racist and get a black actor so they dont actually get called racist when they are not?

My pee tastes like toast

Re: John Boyega's performance

Serious question: what actor could make Disney preteen garbage lines like this good?

- "That's right Phasma, I'm in charge! I'm in charge!"
- "Droid please!"
- "Got a boyfriend? A cute boyfriend?"
- "The way you looked at me! It was like no one had ever looked at me before!"
- "Yes I'm with the Resistance! This is what we look like... Some of us. Others look different."

Meesa rest my case.

"Ouch time!"
