Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens : Haven't seen any of the star wars films…

Haven't seen any of the star wars films…

So yeah as the topic says, I haven't seen any star wars films at all. I want to marathon it over the next couple of days and just wanted to know which ones should I start with. Should I just start from the beginning, or watch the ones made since 2000? Are the older ones worth checking out at all? I'm not a big fan of bad cgi and cheesy 80s dialogue which is why I never really bothered with the series in the first place, since it would mean having to watch the older films.

Re: Haven't seen any of the star wars films…

You sound like you are an adult (if you were a kid I would just say watch the original trilogy Episodes 4-6).

If you are an adult my advice is this:

Watch Episode 1 The Phantom Menace. If you enjoy it, proceed to watch 2-6 and then 7 if you are still interested.

If you don't like Episode 1, abort and watch Episodes 4-6 then 7 if you enjoy those. You can always check out 2 and 3 and Rogue One if you are interested later on.

Re: Haven't seen any of the star wars films…

EP 1 is generally seen as not very good (although I like it).

You simply can not advice someone to start there.

The only correct way to start is STAR WARS 1977. That is the film which made the franchise and introduced The Force etc.

Re: Haven't seen any of the star wars films…

I think if you're not a fan of older movies or anything from the 80s, you're probably not going to like them overall. If you've decided to binge watch them, go with IV, V and VI, then watch I, II and III (So the order they were made, not the order of the story). I, II and III are the kind that you may find you enjoy after enjoying the originals and learning about what lead to them, but if you dive right in, you may not.

As for the CGI, anything in I, II and III was cutting edge at the time and set the standard for what comes later (IV, V and VI are obviously pre-CG, barring some additions made at a later date so that they blend more with I, II and III). A lot of people confuse the style of how something is used with the quality of the effects work though. You'll just have to watch them and decide for yourself.

If you really want to watch episode VII, do so after the other six, however, I would personally advise not bothering. You'll have already seen it, better made, by watching the first three (IV, V and VI). Not to mention, it throws all of the story and character progress of the previous six films into reset mode.

Couldn't have said it better myself Warren!

Re: Haven't seen any of the star wars films…

Thanks! ;-) It's sad, but true... Then again, the OP must make up his/her own mind, if they decide to watch it!

Re: Haven't seen any of the star wars films…

This is all-round terrible advice. Shame on you.

Re: Haven't seen any of the star wars films…

Funny... I don't feel any shame... Quite the opposite, really, for giving the best advice I could. Oddly enough, you suggested exactly the same viewing order I did, so the only objection you can have, is to my advice on TFA. Last time I checked, people are allowed to have differing opinions about movies, without being told they should feel 'shame' about it. ;-)

Otherwise I could say shame on you, for recommending the poor sod watch such a truly awful film. ;-)

Re: Haven't seen any of the star wars films…

Oooops... I somehow thought that your advice was to start with ep1. My bad. Sorry.

...Although the advice on TFA still sucks as most people loved it.

Popularity is not necessarily an indicator of quality. ;-) Does it increase the odds of the OP being someone who might enjoy it? Yes. But he/she asked the question. All we can do is give advice based on our opinions of the films. In my case, I thought TFA was a shockingly bad film.

Re: Haven't seen any of the star wars films…

I think with questions like these it's better to take into account both your personal opinion and general opinion... perhaps emphasizing the latter.

Re: Haven't seen any of the star wars films…

Why? If more people thought TFA was dreadful, even though you loved it, are you telling me you wouldn't tell someone "You know what, it's great! You should give it a go!" Just because more people have a different opinion to you? Would you have so little confidence or belief in your own opinion?

" Are the older ones worth checking out at all? "

You sound like someone who will enjoy the prequels : watch those, and the cartoon stuff maybe.

Re: Haven't seen any of the star wars films…

Start with Flash Gordon and the Race Against Time. It's the best.

That's not bad advice to give to somebody who is completely foreign to space operas.

Re: Haven't seen any of the star wars films…

I'd watch Empire Strikes Back to start, then Star Wars TFA, then Rogue One

Re: Haven't seen any of the star wars films…

Watch ep 4-6 first. Then proceed in release order.

So, release order is the correct answer. And don't believe anyone who says that The Force Awakens is bad, it is a great introduction to the new trilogy.

I would watch prequels too, although they are skippable as is Rogue One.

But EP 4-6 and 7 are a must see. For general knowledge of western culture and cinema even.

But whatever you do, do not start with EP 1-3... you'll just spoil the much superior original trilogy.

Re: Haven't seen any of the star wars films…

I would advice starting with the original trilogy (ep IV-VI) because they introduce the world in a much better way than the newer ones. The newer ones (ep I-III) sort of assume that you know that world and the characters so if you start there I think you would become lost.

Yes there is bad special effects in the original trilogy(it was made before cgi) but I would suggest you power through and watch them anyway because episode I-III just sort of throws you into the story without much backstory.

Re: Haven't seen any of the star wars films…

There's what you call the Tarantino style of watching the series. In order, watch:

1. Ep IV
2. Ep V
3. Ep I
4. Ep II
5. Ep III
6. Ep VI
7. Ep VII

And, if you want, before you watch any of those, go watch Rogue One in the theater and then start with the list as the transition between R1 and Ep IV is almost seamless.
