Star Wars: The Force Awakens : Several questions about Luke Skywalker

Several questions about Luke Skywalker

I got few a questions about the use of Luke Skywalker as a plot device in this film
1.Why did the resistance and the 1st order spend so much time on finding Luke? The guy had not been seen in several years, and Luke could have been very much been dead. Which brings to the next question.
2.How did the resistance and the 1st order know that Luke was still alive? He could of committed suicide, died of starvation, had some fatal disease, had a heart attack, or some cause of death during his time in hiding.
3.Why did the 1st order care about Luke at all in the 1st place. He went to hiding, and whatever he was doing, he did not seem interested in opposing the 1st order.
All in all, I somewhat question using Luke as a plot device

Re: Several questions about Luke Skywalker

1. Leia would know Luke was alive. A good bet she'd know if he'd died, being force sensitive and he is her brother.

2. By the resistance looking for him, the FO knows he's probably still alive and if he returned, he would pose a significant threat to them.

3. answer in #2...Luke is a threat to Snoke.

Re: Several questions about Luke Skywalker

Your basic question of why the search for Luke Skywalker is key.

2.How did the resistance and the 1st order know that Luke was still alive? He could of committed suicide, died of starvation, had some fatal disease, had a heart attack, or some cause of death during his time in hiding.

The First Order had to assume that Luke was alive, as they perceived him as serious threat. If he were dead then the search has no downside.
The Resistance has to hope that he is alive. Leia would have felt if he were dead.

This begs the question 'how powerful has Luke Skywalker become'?
