Film History and Meaning : Semi O.T.: Rank the decades.

Semi O.T.: Rank the decades.

I always hear people talking about their favorite decade, but I haven't actually heard rankings. So I thought it would be fun to start one. By the way, this is semi off-topic because the movies of each decade are a factor. Here's my ranking:

#8 The '40s.
#7 The '30s.
#6 The '60s.
#5 The '50s.
#4 The '80s (I.M.H.O. it's the most overrated decade).
#3 The '70s.
#2 The '00s.
#1 The '90s.

I feel it wouldn't be fair to include the current decade because it's not over yet. But if you do want to include it and/or other decades I left out, go ahead. If you want to say why you ranked them the way you did, go ahead too.

Re: Semi O.T.: Rank the decades.

What about the '20s and '80s?

Re: Semi O.T.: Rank the decades.

This is a really tough question. The only decades I really dislike are the 80's and 90's...and early 2000's. Anyway...

20's
40's
30's
70's
60's
10's
2000's+
1900's/50's
90's
80's

Re: Semi O.T.: Rank the decades.

would be good if new films were less conservative and showed real urinating and pooing as already the case in porn films.

Re: Semi O.T.: Rank the decades.

1. (tie) Hard to choose between 90's and 60's for me
3.2000's
4.50's
5.40's
6.70's
7.80's
8.30's

2010's are shaping up to be in the 5th of 6th spot

Re: Semi O.T.: Rank the decades.

1. 60's
2. 70's
3. 50's
4. 30's
5. 90's

Re: Semi O.T.: Rank the decades.

What about the other decades?

Re: Semi O.T.: Rank the decades.

1. 40s (including 1939, the greatest year of film ever)
2. 50s
3. 80s
4. 70s
5. 90s
6. 30s (excluding 1939)
7. 60s
8-25. To be determined
26. 2000s
27. To be determined
28. 2010s

Sorry to be such a downer on recent decades, but I find them to be too superficial, both blockbusters and critically acclaimed movies alike. Too much cinematic shorthand.

Re: Semi O.T.: Rank the decades.

Base off of the importance of film? Or Entertainment?

1. 40's ( Alfred Hitchcock, the father of film; all techniques, Code Breaker )

2. 80's ( Spielberg & Lucas two saviors from 70's blaxploitation films )

3. 30's ( Kong & Oz )

80's can't be overrated with John Williams. Pretty much the "Hitchcock" of Music. just adding too cents.

Re: Semi O.T.: Rank the decades.

I was thinking more of their substance. I just get more meaning and value from films from the 30s, 40s, and 50s. I was born in the 70s, so there's no nostalgia at play here. Older films simply speak to me more.

I don't find that movies today, even the ones that are supposed to have substance, to be that well written and directed. I know very few people would agree with me, and that's okay. I know I'm being a bit of a curmudgeon.

Well, I agree with you, but I'm born 1988. I think the old limits made films better, both as in the film code and visual effects. The 70's seems to be about transition, adults really had a field day. It's like after film got more freedom, fokes didn't know what to do with it until late 70's. Shame all the old was old by then. Kubrick and few did cash in tho, it's just isn't the sexiest era in my book.

I hope current hollywood gets out of this Superhero Fad, the old western Fad was better.
