Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens : Be Honest Please… Had You Ever Heard of a "Mary Sue…?"
Re: Be Honest Please… Had You Ever Heard of a "Mary Sue…?"
Ah yes another 'I've just found something out therefore no one else could have known it!'
Considering the parody character the trope is named after is over 40 years old, the term isn't exactly uncommon. Obviously people are going to love to project their ignorance onto others

Re: Be Honest Please… Had You Ever Heard of a "Mary Sue…?"
I first heard it in reference to Mara Jade (she isn't) and have heard it a handful of times. I think Rand Al'Thor was the first character to really get the label in my experience. For my money Luke in the old EU was the first I really saw of anyone truly becoming one, but they humbled him in the Fate of the Jedi series to take some of that criticism off.

Thanks. I wondering why I had never heard of the term before, but suddenly people were using it as if it always existed.

I was introduced to the term by the infamous fanfic called "My Immortal". That was 10 years ago.

It's not a new concept. If you follow movies, theater, or whatever, chances are you've seen the term before.

You're right, it isn't a new concept. But Rey made it mainstream.

Only manbabies are using the term, the same guys who are perfectly fine with Luke's Sueness.

I had heard of it, in conjunction with Daenerys Targaryen of A game of throne fame. It made me rethink my own (amateurish & terrible) writing at the time.
After that I heard the term a few more times. Mostly because I read on tvtropes.com or whatever the site is called.

I had heard it before and it had already become an overused expression just like "Jump the shark".
I remember people saying Danaerys Targaryen was a Mary Sue in Game of Thrones.

Alice from the Resident Evil movies is a Mary Sue and so is Rey, but it took Alice 3 movies to become OP whereas it took Rey 1 movie.
