TV General : HBO 2002-2007 vs. AMC 2010-2013

HBO 2002-2007 vs. AMC 2010-2013

Which of these channels/time periods produced the best television?

HBO 2002-2007: The Sopranos, The Wire, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Six Feet Under, etc.

AMC 2010-2013: Breaking Bad, Mad Men, The Walking Dead, etc.

Take into account the shows listed as well as any others that were airing during the time period specified.

Quite easily HBO in my opinion. Add in Deadwood and Carnivale, and you have the pinnacle of television.

Re: HBO 2002-2007 vs. AMC 2010-2013

I think The Walking Dead is garbage nowadays, but 2010-2013 it was still good. I don't like Mad Men, and I think it's extremely overrated, but not as badly as The Sopranos. I can't get behind TS being among the Greatest of All-Time, I find its storylines to be quite simplistic and often over the top, and the characterization of everyone apart from the Soprano family and Christopher (who are all whiny and irritating - Tony included) is paper thin.

Breaking Bad and The Wire are incredible.

So it comes down to Six Feet Under - which I happen to love - and that gives the edge to HBO. (Haven't watched Curb Your Enthusiasm.)

I agree with you about The Sopranos. I think it is highly overrated. I watched up to season 3 episode 2 before giving up on the show. It's a show that makes you want to believe it's smarter than it actually is.

I do however appreciate what The Sopranos did for the TV world. The Sopranos in many ways kicked off premium television. It made shows like Dexter, Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones possible . So in that perspective I'm glad the show existed and became a hit.

I concur with your guys' take on the Sopranos. Maybe at that time and place it was much better than it seems later when so many better shows have come out since, but I just couldn't get into it. Gave it until sometime through the second season.

Definitely HBO

Re: HBO 2002-2007 vs. AMC 2010-2013

I think HBO, they started sooner and had more money to put into productions. HBO had more series than AMC.

I think Mad Men on AMC started better than it finished, it reached it height about mid-way through its run, when Draper's Agency started to merge and then went rogue (think the episode was called "Shut the door...?"

As for The Walking Dead, our local bowling alley just pulled the plug on it's pinball machine version. Think AMC should be doing the same with the show.

Not trying to be "that guy" but the wire was overrated. Good but not even close to being the greatest like I'm supposed to believe.
