The Age of Adaline : Things that bothered me…

Things that bothered me…

Overall I found this movie to be watchable. Things that bothered me however...

1) Why didn't Adaline google Harrison Ford at some point since the advent of the internet? She would have known he was an accomplished astronomer and made the connection when Ellis mentioned his family. Did she not google Ellis either? For someone who was in fear of the law, I would think she would do some recon work on (creepy/stalker-y) gentlemen callers like Ellis. It seemed like Ellis was pretty high profile and internet article or wiki would have mentioned his father.

2) And, yes, Jones is a very common last name. But if I were Adaline and the ONLY men I decided to be with in the 60 years since I've been running from whoever were both named Jones as a last name, I would do some digging. She was way too intelligent and wise to not ask questions or google.

3) I didn't sense the chemistry between Adaline and Ellis. Surely Adaline over the decades must have met other men that she had much more chemistry with. I find it hard to imagine that Ellis' game was that awesome that it made Adaline break her rules and let her guard down a little. I just didn't see it with them.

and finally...

4) Am I the only one who wanted her to end up with Harrison Ford? The characters seemed to have quite a connection, at least in flashbacks and she did love him. He loved her so much. I kept hoping they would kiss at the end lol. I think that if she didn't end up with Harrison Ford, she shouldn't have been with Ellis. Ending up with your former love's son is weird! She should have cut her losses, leave that family alone and date someone else.

2) And, yes, Jones is a very common last name. But ...

For this point you have to think less of the script itself and more of the scriptwriter. Being fiction they had to come up with a very common name to make it sort of work, so they chose Jones. If instead they would have chosen "Ejiofor" for example it would have raised much more suspicion in Adaline's mind. Is it plausible that she would not have been suspicious of Jones? Maybe. I am not bothered by it.

4) Am I the only one who wanted her to end up with Harrison Ford?

No you aren't, other people have mentioned that sentiment. But that would have been breaking up a happy marriage. Put yourself in that situation, you have been with someone a long time and are happy, but an old boyfriend/girlfriend comes along and breaks things up. Would you be thrilled by that?

Re: Things that bothered me…

3) I agree as far as not completely seeing the chemistry, but on the second part, I can understand that she acted like a distant cold-hearted bitch all the time so she probably didn't make very many connections. It took a very persistent man to break through.

4) She obviously didn't have enough chemistry with Harrison Ford to tell him the truth and let him in. For Ellis she turned the car around. That's with her being young and unguarded in the first relationship and then completely guarded and skeptical in the second. Second one obviously meant more just looking at the facts even though the chemistry seemed to look better in the first on what was shown to us.

I thought it was better that Harrison Ford spent his time trying to convince her to stay for the sake of his son. To me that fatherly love was the most touching part of the film. He put aside his old love and his old hurt for his son.

Re: Things that bothered me…

1. The reason they split because she doesn't want to reveal who she is, why would she look him up. I am glad she didn't peep through the window from bushes LOL....

2. You don't dig people past unless you don't trust them, i will leave it at that.

3. I am not sure about about other men but i agree with rest.

4. Eww..as a woman knowing slept with son and you want to roll back to dad? Hey kid i stole your girl? LOL

Re: Things that bothered me…

Dating in today's world (sadly and unromantically) requires at least light googling before meeting them or pursuing something with them. A little digging is important so you know a little about who you are dealing with - does their name check out, are they a 'real' person, are they in a relationship, do they seem normal, have friends, a job, etc. There are too many crazies running around! I found out so many men I've met on an online dating app were in committed relationships. Google is your best friend when meeting anybody new. Hell, I even google potential employers and interviewers -- the internet is a glorious place!

Re: Things that bothered me…

You wrote " Am I the only one who wanted her to end up with Harrison Ford? ", essentially wanting her to break up his happy marriage, yet you worry about people you meet on an online dating app? You seem to be seriously screwed up, get help! Try living in reality instead of fantasy. I suspect there are "online apps" for that too.

Re: Things that bothered me…

If we're working within the framework and premise that a 29-year-old woman never ages for 87 years and happens to fall in love with a guy and then his son more than 30 years later, then YES I would like a whatever ending seems fitting for the protagonist. Its a fantasy romance movie.

Also, relax. Sheesh.

Re: Things that bothered me…

Agreed. It would be really weird being with the son of your ex lover. Did they also tell Ellis' mother who Jenny really is? Or are they going to keep a secret from her. Either way I think it's unhealthy for Ellis and Adeline to continue on in their relationship. If these people are truly human, the feelings and emotions are going to get in the way. But again this is a movie. Everyone will live
happily everafter. Still a good movie though. Cheers!

Re: Things that bothered me…

Well no, it does not.

Dating in today's world is not confined to online dating. 'Before meeting them'? In most dating situations you've usually met the person.

Dating the old-fashioned way doesn't require anymore internet research than it used to. i.e. none at all. You don't get to know someone by looking at their facebook profile.

Re: Things that bothered me…

Fair point. This is very true.

However.

I know a friend who met someone in the traditional way in person, they both agreed to not check each other's social media so they get to know each other the 'normal' way. They dated happily. Weeks later she found out he was married with kids.

Re: Things that bothered me…

2) And, yes, Jones is a very common last name. But

Even weirder is that apparently she didn't see all those Indiana Jones movies in the 70s and 80s and recognized the love of her life.

We learned more from a three minute record than we ever learned in school

Re: Things that bothered me…

You bring up a great point about that she should have figured that out...

I loved like 2/3-3/4 of the film, but was really disappointed that nothing more was done with Harrison Ford's character. The whole "but, Ellis!" thing felt weird, as did the rushed resolution. I also thought it odd he wasn't suspicious of her motivations, and hurting his son too, much less just instantly pushing them together!

I also hated, HATED them taking away her immortal-ness. As soon as the truck hit I was scared that was what they were doing, and it just totally ruined the last half hour or so.

I like the idea of her life being altered by this event...that this family is sophisticated enough and good enough to keep the secret, protect her, but thst does NOT necessarily mean she should end up with Ellis, and even if she does, I HATE her immortality being stripped away for a lot of reasons.

I basically went from a 5/5 to...I don't know, the last 25 minutes almost totally ruins it for me :-/

Re: Things that bothered me…

I think this was my main gripe and why I felt Adaline and Harrison Ford should've ended up together -- I wanted SOMETHING more from HF's character. Felt like such a waste of Indiana Jones! lol

Re: Things that bothered me…

I didn't care for the movie much. It was a cute idea, badly executed. The biggest annoyance was the unneeded and corny commentary throughout. "And so Adaline this", and "and so Adaline that". It ruined any chance I had of enjoying it, by bringing it down to a kindergarten level. The worst one was the last one. Like we really needed to hear an explanation of why she was aging again. DUMB. The director was out to lunch.

No. I don't think she should have ended up with Ford. It would have ruined his existing marriage to a wonderful companion. Dumb idea OP.

This movie actually had a shot at being something very unique and classical, but it was trashed in the childish way the director implemented his story. Instead, it's just another one of those movies that are entertaining to watch, but doesn't cut the mustard, and leaves you thinking about 'what might have been'.

Re: Things that bothered me…

I agree with your point about the two leads lacking chemistry. I'm guessing this is probably one of the main reasons you wanted her character to end up with Harrison Ford. I think the screenwriter tried valiantly to create moments of chemistry between Ellis and Adaline, but it never really gelled. Given that, you've got an always compelling screen presence in Ford, so it seems natural to see her still drawn to him as audience interest (at least for me) perked up every time Harrison Ford was on the screen.

Clearly they were trying for an epic story feel, similar to The Mysterious Case of Benjamin Button, but it just didn't work well enough to make this movie a classic, or really move me that deeply. To be fair, I felt the same way about Benjamin Button..

Re: Things that bothered me…

4) I also wanted her to end up with the dad. Their story was more touching and they had more chemistry. Their first meeting with each other was by chance as if destiny put them together. While on the other hand with the son Ellis, he made sure he met her. Their meeting was forced while adalines and the dad's first interaction was as if fate brought them together. You could tell it was something really special with the dad because he was the first person she told her real name to. It appeared she was more careless and felt free with the dad which to me shows how much she loved him. I assume many of us want her to end up with the dad because that was her first love (besides her husband) which she could've married. Unfortunately she ran off because she didn't want to tell him the secret. I know it would've been wrong to ruin the happy marriage he had with his wife but the author could've made it happened if ford was a widower. Also if this was the case I guess it would've only worked out if they ran away together. Which would still be a good ending to me.

Re: Things that bothered me…

i didn't really see why she wanted to be in a relationship with anyone. What was the point? Nothing ahead for her but heartache and loss as he grows old and she stays young. The most unbearable thing though would be outliving her daughter - every parent's worst nightmare is to outlive their children, and for her it is an inevitability. it's a horrific existence. What happens to her is a horror story, but it is disguised as a sentimental romance.

Re: Things that bothered me…

Just watched half of this today because Harrison Ford was in it but I didn't even make it to when he finally had his bit part in the movie. The two leads are horrible. When she first met him and got into the taxi I thought, thank God, he is not going to be in the movie anymore. Then I realized he was on the movie poster.

It reminded me of why I don't watch sweet, syrupy, romantic movies. It's such a fake and shallow world. Not as bad as Disney used to be but still extremely dull. Though I'm sure everyone can relate to these two and the upper echelons of San Francisco society. I'm all for romance but he just kept plugging away and it became so annoying. At least the lead female character gets to see her beloved SF taken over by the Silicon Valley people.
