The Age of Adaline : If Adaline was a man instead of a woman

If Adaline was a man instead of a woman

If this is happening to a man instead of woman I don't think it would be this complicated.

Hay, I'm a woman myself and not againts feminism... but I have to admit that it probably did. I ask my boy friend what happen if he got into an accident and become immortall all of a sudden just like Adaline. He's not watching the movie yet and he answered that he made a lot of money while he's immortal, spend the money, go travelling and just living the live while he's immortal. And I ask him what about relationship and married? Would you be lonely? And he laugh while answering my question. He said that he probably wouldn't thinking about relationsip if he's immortal and rich.

...and?

Re: If Adaline was a man instead of a woman

Dude, you'd have to re-write her entire post.

Re: If Adaline was a man instead of a woman

I agree with your boyfriend. If this happened to a male character, we would have a completely different movie. hah

Re: If Adaline was a man instead of a woman

I do feel that the movie would have had a different tone.

Re: If Adaline was a man instead of a woman

Sure at first a relationship may not be the first thing on his mind, but I guarantee that eventually he'd get lonely enough and want to be with someone. Humans are social creatures, we're not programmed to live our lives alone. We all want a deeper connection with someone, so while I do think it would be a different movie if the main character was a guy, it wouldn't be as different as you might think. After a few hundred years, all the money and things in the world wouldn't mean anything. Guarantee he'd eventually want someone to share it all with.

Re: If Adaline was a man instead of a woman

Yeah look at Doctor Who . :)

Re: If Adaline was a man instead of a woman

yeah, difference would be additional 500 years before he realizes that relationships are important

Re: If Adaline was a man instead of a woman

I doubt it would be much different. Adeline was already avoiding relationships to an inhuman degree.

Re: If Adaline was a man instead of a woman

If Adaline were a man, we wouldn't see the sexist schlock that's all over this board. "OMG SHE HAD SEX WITH THE DAD AND SON!!!!"

If she was a man like board would probably be all congratulatory or just not mention anything.

Re: If Adaline was a man instead of a woman

She doesn't know that William is Ellis father... so it doesn't count?

Re: If Adaline was a man instead of a woman

You've got to take the era into account.

Had this happened to a woman today, I suspect she'd have spent less time worrying about relationships.

Re: If Adaline was a man instead of a woman

Try watching the Highlander series and you will see the "man as immortal" perspective on relationships with women. It turns out being very similar.

Re: If Adaline was a man instead of a woman

There's the reply I was looking for.

Gender has nothing to do with it, OP. Most people get lonely and want a lasting connection at some point. It's not about sex or romance - it's about family. There are exceptions, people who prefer to remain alone for one reason or another, but most need close bonds with other people. Love, trust, belonging, companionship, security. Someone who knows you. Someone you can count on. A lot of people don't think that much about it in their twenties, but as they age, for most people it slowly becomes important.

Again, there are exceptions, but gender has nothing to do with it.

Re: If Adaline was a man instead of a woman

Her only long-term relationship, outside of her daughter, of course, was with a blind woman, for obvious reasons.

Not being able to sustain long-term relationships would really suck.

I don't want the world. I just want your half.

Re: If Adaline was a man instead of a woman

If this was a male character, the movie would've been a lad comedy about parties, drinking and one night stands. Bad as the movie is, at least we were spared from something!

Re: If Adaline was a man instead of a woman

Weird how this movie has that 40's-ish feel:
"Drop your plans, take good care of your man now".

Re: If Adaline was a man instead of a woman

have you ever watched Groundhogs day? that shows a man who is immortal (the same day repeating endlessly )and what he does with his time. awesome movie.

Re: If Adaline was a man instead of a woman

There was an old Twilight Zone episode like that about a man who is ageless and has lived for thousands lf years. He too would involve himself with young women, and eventually leave them to keep his secret intact.

When I'm good, I'm GOOD. When I'm bad, I'm BETTER.

Re: If Adaline was a man instead of a woman

The board would be up in arms about a 107 year old man trying to sleep with 20 somethings.

Re: If Adaline was a man instead of a woman

If main of this movie character would have been a guy...

He would have been babyfaced 40 year old guy that would have been ridiculed during WWII if he didn't sign up for military and if he did join the military... all sorts of suffering would have followed. Assuming he survived the war, awkward veterans meetings would have followed in decades to come with funerals of guys who he served with.

Supporting characters...

Mike, the 22 year old guy who threw grenade in room occupied by civilians in France 1944 and never got over it, offed himself in mid 50's.

Re: If Adaline was a man instead of a woman

if he already had a kid like she did it would be different. He'd not enjoy watching his child grow old.
