The Age of Adaline : Things I learned from watching The Age of Adaline…

Things I learned from watching The Age of Adaline…

1. It's possible for non-lethal levels of electric energy to fundamentally alter every gene in your body, and later restore them to normal when reapplied.
2. People who don't seem to age heighten their chances of long-term survival by driving like dangerous maniacs while engaged in casual conversation.
3. Most ordinary comets have orbits that are somehow mathematically inconsistent with all known physics.
4. Non-starting cars with perfectly functioning starter motors and batteries will start if pushed down a hill.
5. Pet dogs are fine cooped up indoors for days without anyone walking or feeding them.
6. Love for one's pet is inversely proportionally to how much time one spends taking care of them.
7. Those given all the time in the world spend the lion's share of it carefully coiffing their hair dozens of different ways.
8. 100 years ago Americans spoke rather like native born Germans faking an American accent badly.
9. Those who become immortal in their 20s remain at that irritating intellectual / emotional / social age.
10. Every 10 years or so those who may never die employ an unknown risky third party to generate new IDs for them. They learn some languages instead of learning how to do this essential skill themselves (the immortal don't do nerdy skut work).

Re: Things I learned from reading your post…

Absolutely nothing.

If this is an attempt at humor it misses the mark badly. If you are saying those are things that made the movie unenjoyable for you then you probably should stick to documentaries.

Re: Things I learned from watching The Age of Adaline…

tammie_eric is far from an idiot. It's just that her list went completely over your head.

Re: Things I learned from watching The Age of Adaline…

Actually, my high school boyfriend and I used to start his uncle's MG all the time by giving it a push and popping the clutch, so I'm afraid you're off base with that one, my friend.

Terriers always smell like warm, buttered toast.

Re: Things I learned from watching The Age of Adaline…

Uh, if the starter and battery worked fine why were you pushing it and popping the clutch? Battery dead? Then it wouldn't crank? Drrr....

Re: Things I learned from watching The Age of Adaline…

You don't need a starter nor a battery to "start" a standard transmission car. If needed, you can get it going by being pushed while you hold the clutch in and then "pop" the clutch while in gear and the motion of the transmission kicks the engine over, "starting" the car. Voila! Good to go until you shut it off or stall it out. Should really educate yourself before trying to talk down on anyone.

Re: Things I learned from watching The Age of Adaline…

Exactly... did it zillions of time with my '72 Super Beetle and '68 Beetle.... Practiced just for the hell of it or to show off sometimes. Have done it with every standard I owned just to be sure it still would work if I needed it to.

Re: Things I learned

Let's get this thread back to the list of absurdities, which started out so well.

Re: Things I learned from watching The Age of Adaline…

That is how we drove in 50's and 60's. Very common then.

Re: Things I learned from watching The Age of Adaline…

I was here for the Movie banter, but I like car stuff too. All but one of the cars I have owned over the last 30 years have had clutches and I have done hill starts with most. The most recent ones however have been high performance turbocharged ones and I have been warned off by mechanics not to do it with them unless my (mysteriously long) life depended on it.

Re: Things I learned from watching The Age of Adaline…

Have done this many times in an old family Jeep CJ-7. Thing would even stall sometimes while being driven and you could pop the clutch and get it going again.

Makes me feel old that people actually don't believe this sort of thing works!

Re: Things I learned from watching The Age of Adaline…

11. I learned this movie kinda sucked.

Re: Things I learned from watching The Age of Adaline…

Me too. Harrison Ford would make a wonderful wooden Indian because he delivers all his dialog with little if any emotion. The only good thing about this movie is that I'll never have to watch it again. It really stunk up the joint. Just my honest opinion.

Re: Things I learned from watching The Age of Adaline…

13 a policeman would be surprised if the id of a woman say she's 45, when she looks 44!

Re: Things I learned from watching The Age of Adaline…

14 there is a reason why car manufacturers stopped making cars where you can sneak from the back seat to the car's trunk, the fbi demanded it

Re: Things I learned from watching The Age of Adaline…

Hahaa! Wait...what? Car manufacturers still make cars (mainly sedans) that way. Perhaps you are being sarcastic. ;P

OP, you're too much of an idiot to learn anything, period.

And you're a twatwaffle. I found what OP said to be profoundly amusing.

Re: Things I learned from watching The Age of Adaline…

me too!

Re: Things I learned from watching The Age of Adaline…

What I learned from watching this movie: it was written by a kid, because any woman over 60 knows full well that there's no guy in his 20s who would be ATTRACTIVE to her. Why? Geez. Figure it out!

While a man can be so frightened of aging that he will date / marry / fall in love with someone 20-30-50 years younger, not so many women would do that. A woman of over a 100 is not likelty to find a young guy anything but a 'cute puppy dog', not someone to have a relatsonship with even if a woman over 100 still had the emotional responses of someone under 50.

What would a mature woman find attractive in Ellis? NOTHING. HE'S A KID, a NAIVE KID. His life is before him, and he acts that way. That's fine, but a woman of advanced years EVEN IF SHE IS NOT AGING would not be full of that wonder that young people have.
It's why no one, except very young people, really WANT to live to be 100.
I'm 67 and believe me! I gave up that stupid dream a loooong time ago, even though, drat! I come from long lived stock. My grandmother lived to be 107 and almost 110. My mother is alive and quite active at 95. She just drove her big truck from Fort Worth back to her home in the Seattle area, after driving to Fort Worth a month ago for a visit.

Anyway that's my input. I should say that the men who pursue me these days are all under 35. I find that HIGHLY annoying, since I have NO interest in teaching another kid how to make love.

Life is a journey not a destination. Fear nothing.

Re: Things I learned from watching The Age of Adaline…

Excellent post, TanteWaileka! I agree with everything you said!

Re: Things I learned from watching The Age of Adaline…

I totally agree. I was a bit disappointed, since I thought there was a lot of wasted potential. A movie about a mature but eternally youthful woman, abundant in wisdom but still fresh of face throughout the decades would be great, but instead they made it into another silly rom-com avout a silly girl running away from true love for her own silly reasons.

Realistically, I wanted to see her act like a hundred year old woman in a youthful body. No centenarian would have been impressed with Ellis' creepy persistence and his cherry-boy antics, no matter how attractive he is. She would have had too much experience to take his creepy fratboy infatuation seriously, and given sonny-boy a lecture on the proper way to woo a woman without stooping to threats and stalking. She probably has socks that are older than he is.

Considering the idiot is 29 in 2014/15/16 and everything she owns is deeply vintage and belongs from the 1900's, and is probably what she wore 100 years ago, yes, I think she probably has one or two stockings and knickers considerably a bit older than he.

Re: Things I learned from watching The Age of Adaline…

That's why the Adaline character was disappointing. It seemed like she stayed 29 mentally as well as physically till the end.

15. If your driver's licence says you're 45, and you look 29, people will contact the FBI.

(seriously? I'm older and still get carded)

Re: Things I learned from watching The Age of Adaline…

I'm 32 and I look about 20. No one has contacted the FBI about my curious non-aging face.. XD

Re: Things I learned from watching The Age of Adaline…

?#. That you wouldn't possibly be thought of as weird when you dress like you're from 1908 for 10 years. There's retro, and then there's something that just looks off. No one is going to think twice of the blonde bombshell who looks 29 for 10 years. Or you know, that she dresses like she's stuck in the 1900's, or that her apartment looks as if it's from the 1908's.

Re: Things I learned from watching The Age of Adaline…

Anyone saw Jack or Big or The Curious Case of Bejamin Button, or 13 going on 30?

I just downloaded from Amazon Adeline, finsihed it and am watching my DVD of Benjamin Button (man growing younger, a la Jack). Saw both of those, and Adeline, in theatres (Adeline, if I am correct is Blake Lively's FIRST starring role, and the current out "Shallows" is her second.)

Re: Things I learned from watching The Age of Adaline…

Some funny stuff, but...

Incorrect with #4. Manual transmission cars can start when popping the clutch, regardless of starter or battery life. In fact, back in college, when my classic manual car was not recharging the battery (failed alternator), I'd coast down my street a bit, pop the clutch...and happily be on my way.

However, until I got a new alternator (or starter another time), I had to make certain that I parked in an area with clear downslope....for the repetitious procedure! If I was in a flat area with friends, they'd push while running beside the car to hop inside. It always made us laugh. :D

Manual cars are generally much easier to rig and service. That's why certain foreign countries, like Mexico, mainly rent manuals to tourists (best price too).
