Re: Disney reportedly unhappy with how Rogue One turned out
This could very well lead to movies like Passengers and Assassins Creed over-performing.

Re: Disney reportedly unhappy with how Rogue One turned out
Or, knowing Disney's obsessive micromanagement and market research, it could just mean that Edwards turned in an original film that doesn't just redress people's favourite bits from the old one.

Re: Disney reportedly unhappy with how Rogue One turned out
The New York Post, and other clickbait sites have spun the story into the film being an ineptly made disaster to get more traffic, but Disney have admitted they're doing reshoots:
"Security - release the badgers."
The filmmaking team and the studio always anticipated additional shooting and second unit work to make the film the absolute best it can be, and the actors were aware there would be additional shooting. Coming off The Force Awakens, theres an incredibly high bar for this movie and we have a responsibility to the franchise and to the fans to deliver the best possible movie we can.

Re: Disney reportedly unhappy with how Rogue One turned out
Four weeks is fairly substantial, but it's a long way from scrapping the film and starting over from scratch like the three months of reshoots on Green Zone (or Universal's other double the budget trying to fix the film mishaps like The Wolfman during that era). It sounds more like what happened with John Williams on the last film, when he basically spent a year rewriting his score and racked up the largest number of recording sessions ever for a film score because the suits wanted his score to sound more like the original trilogy and micromanaged every note. Since Disney approved the script and I can't see them dropping their gaze long enough for Edwards to go off it, it does seem more likely to be in a similar vein - a bit like forcing a kid to write the same thing out 100 times after school until they're satisfied.

Re: Disney reportedly unhappy with how Rogue One turned out
You mean 4 weeks, fantastic four only having few days of reshoots (if it is true) was part of the end result problem (extremely rush and cheap production in the movie second half)
Re: Disney reportedly unhappy with how Rogue One turned out
You're forgetting Wallfish's basic math skills, Cornetto - four weeks, four months, it's all the same to him.

Re: Disney reportedly unhappy with how Rogue One turned out
That sound like a special level of a studio not believing in a movie possibility to be repaired and cutting their lost.
Re: Disney reportedly unhappy with how Rogue One turned out
It's that the same New York Post whose parent company also owns the studio that once - but no longer - distributes the Star Wars films?
Re: Disney reportedly unhappy with how Rogue One turned out
Gareth Edwards is not a great director. I kept telling certain people that this film will not make 400 million dollars domestically, but nobody would listen. And I don't even think this film will make a billion worldwide.

Re: Disney reportedly unhappy with how Rogue One turned out
That would be a risky bet the not making 400 millions domestic, because it could still do it even if it is one of worst blockbuster ever made.
Except for attack of the clones they all made 500 million+ adjusted a the domestic box office, and Clones still did an extremely high 446,265,200.
It is not lock for anything specially not being in the main storyline, but if their is Darth Vader and the star wars theme song are in a movie trailer, it should do well.

Re: Disney reportedly unhappy with how Rogue One turned out
It will do well. But if it's not that good, then it won't make 400 million dollars domestically. And it's gonna have some good competition with Assassin's Creed.

Re: Disney reportedly unhappy with how Rogue One turned out
And even if Rogue One dissapointes, not sure how much that will benefit other films. I am still a real skeptic on Assasin's Creed, and would like details on where it was well received. If it was at some geek convention, you lose. There is a long history of films getting extastic receptions at Comic Book and Gaming conventions, then going on to bomb with the General Audience.
Re: Disney reportedly unhappy with how Rogue One turned out
I think studios like Disney and Warner Brothers are simply responding to the failure of BVS. So they're attempting to add more humor to their upcoming films.
Granted, these are just rumors. And I hope Rogue One will be a good film.

I ain't hitting the panic button yet. We will see in December.
Re: Disney reportedly unhappy with how Rogue One turned out
To be fair, even the average movie goer would know that BvS didn't fail due to lack of humor but rather it's script was terrible, acting was average at best and cringeworthy at worst, the CGI in parts of the film was horrible and they wasted so many amazing opportunities.
SPOILERS
Exhibit A- Martha.FFS Martha?
Exhibit B- Doomsday. Iconic villain wasted as one of a half dozen side stories
Exhibit C- lex Luther criminal mastermind, evil genius of Metropolis and where does this evil mastermind keep the computer servers for his entire life's work hidden??? One flight of stairs down from the front door next to the kitchen! There are Scooby Do episodes where Fred and Velma have to work harder than Aflec did to get what they need
Exhibit D-Kryptonite makes Superman weak. He almost drowns getting the Kryptonite spear yet he is able to fly a half mile with the spear???????? HE COULD BARELY SWIM But I'm supposed to believe he got a second wind and could fly with it??????
Exhibit E- MARTHA! Yes, this is so stupid it deserves a second mention! Oh, and if you think I'm mad at how utterly ridiculous it is that someone who spent 2 years planning to murder another person just suddenly decides not to because their mothers have the same first name, well it's not. What's even more absurd is that superman, who loves his earth mother like she were his real mom, refers to her by her first name! Who in the hell refers to their mom by her first name? You say "save my mom" not "save Martha". Batman a response should have been "who the F is Martha, now die"!
There are so many more issues but I'll stop now. The bottom line is that you could have poop tell you a funny joke but it's still poop!

I admit I would need to rewatch and I was a bit confused, but didn't Luther wanted for Batman to get all those information, so he would know about the ship, get the kryptonite and be able to kill superman with it ? And that in part why he was invited to the party in the first place.
I could be remembering all wrong and he got the information about the boat from an other source, I'm not sure.
Re: Disney reportedly unhappy with how Rogue One turned out
I've read a couple more sources on this subject. And it looks like the reshoots are being done to add more humor, because Rogue One feels too much like a downer.
I don't know if that's a good thing. I think a completely serious Star Wars film would of been a breath of fresh air.

Re: Disney reportedly unhappy with how Rogue One turned out
It depends how serious. Whether we like it or not a 'Schindler's List' type of Star Wars film would probably not work with a modern audience.
Re: Disney reportedly unhappy with how Rogue One turned out
I think that's the type of thing that would work really well with modern audiences. There are a lot of SW fans who are 30 plus that would appreciate it IMO. I hope they don't lighten the tone too much.
Re: Disney reportedly unhappy with how Rogue One turned out

Re: Disney reportedly unhappy with how Rogue One turned out
Sounds like a classic case of buyer's remorse.
Two years ago: "We'd like you to make a Star Wars war film."
Eighteen months ago: "Here's my script for a Star Wars war film."
"This is great - it's everything we asked for in a Star Wars War film. Here's lots of money for pre-production."
One year ago: "Here's lots of money to make a Star Wars war film."
Last week: "Here's the first cut of the Star Wars war film you asked for."
After screening: "But this is a Star Wars war film. We don't want this. Go back and make it more like the last Star Wars (not war) film. Which was more like the first Star Wars film."
And, being Disney, we will never see the director's cut.

And the Disney execs said that the film is solid. But they want it to be a bit more fun. Well good luck with that. Because Gareth Edwards doesn't really do fun in the traditional sense of the word.

Re: Disney reportedly unhappy with how Rogue One turned out
What's changed is that when they started shooting they were expecting TFA to make $1.3-1.5b and they thought they could afford to experiment with a side project that might make half that to keep things ticking over between 'real' SW films. But when it passed $2b they started thinking how much more they could make if they didn't take an original approach and made it more like the previous films. It's just a commodity that will hit the share price if it underperforms.
A shame, because this was the only one of their SW projects that really sounded promising precisely because it didn't sound like another "Let's destroy the new Death Star" or meet the characters when they were young and had no charisma rehash.
Can you imagine how today's Disney management would have reacted to The Empire Strikes Back?

That could be true, now that they have seen not only how much money they made but how good the reception was to just redo star wars 4-5 again, it could be a lot about making this one more classic star wars (could be making Vader bigger in it for example, putting the first apparition of young Solo now that he is cast, etc), they think maybe it can be a 900 million ww movie if we do so instead of a 650 one.

Isn't it a shoo-in for biggest film of the year? I'm aware that it's not one of the main episodes, but wouldn't it be a little eyebrow-raising to see it drop over a billion from TFA?
Perhaps I'm well off the plantation on that one, though.

If they put Vader in it and make it classic star wars (with the added Asian appeal) they are certainly a strong candidate to get over civil war, I think a Vader star wars is almost a lock for 900 million, however bad it is.
You are probably right, like for SW7 (and Jurassic World) I think I'm probably underestimating the franchise crazy level of appeal.

Then again, I might be overestimating it because those films exploded. December will reveal all, I suppose.
I was under the impression that they were putting Vader in it, anyway. It would certainly be a strange choice not to work him in somehow, considering the plot of this film leads on to the events of the original film. He seemed pretty ticked off about those Death Star plans.

Well, thanks to CGi Peter Cushing has risen from the crypt and is in it even though he was so overshadowed by his subordinate that most people forget he was eeven in the first one, so I think we can take it for granted that Mr V was always part of the deal as well.

Re: Disney reportedly unhappy with how Rogue One turned out
Disney will not stop what they are planning due to a petition.
They will do what they feel is necessary to make money. And considering their many ventures as of the past few years - they will succeed (regardless of subjective "quality").
I don't shut up, I grow up, and when I look at you, I throw up, Aghhh!
