Re: The Great Wall passes $200M WW…

Is it pretty much in line with expectation ? Seem to not have done much more in China than what Transformer did 5 year's ago in 2011.

Well below, which is why they were spinning - sorry, stressing it hasn't rolled out internationally yet when they announced Tull's departure from Legendary. They were expecting it to pass $200m in China alone:

Re: The Great Wall passes $200M WW…

It depends on how it does in the rest of the world, but so far in China I think it has been a little disappointing. For what was widely hyped as the biggest budget Chinese film ever, it's not even going to crack the top 5 biggest films of 2016 in China (it's already pretty much played out in that market and is currently sitting at #7 in the top yearly list, barely above From Vegas to Macau III, a gambling movie made for a fraction of the budget).

Any hopes that this could primarily rely on one market to succeed also have been dashed, as this film is still 100 mil away from doubling its production budget and is now going to have to rely primarily on western markets to close that gap, and they could very well react to it with the same indifference that they did with 47 Ronin. And its reviews are not going to help things.

Even if it does become a success it'll probably be a modest one, and considering all the hype and how badly Legendary is in need of a hit right now, it's hard to regard this "east meets wests" experiment as having gone over well and may likely put a damper on future such attempts.

Re: The Great Wall passes $200M WW…

I'd personally like to see one of these attempts actually result in a GOOD, or dare I see, even a great movie....as opposed to these Warcraft/Great Wall kind of "If it is your thing you'll dig it but otherwise it isn't that good" type of films.

But it is a tall order, and to meet the 'co-production' standards to get the 40% cut of the Chinese Box Office instead of 25% requires meeting quite a few criteria.

It would take quite a bit to make a film that is 1. Commercially minded to appeal to US and China "equally" without feeling inorganic and 2. Is actually a great film

Every time I hear someone mention this movie I think "what if Tom Cruise had starred?".
