Re: How is the book? (Heart of the Sea)

Book is damn good. Enjoy.

Re: How is the book? (Heart of the Sea)

Better than the movie, much better. (Not that I didn't enjoy the movie, but)

Re: How is the book? (Heart of the Sea)

Oh it's great! One of my all time favorite books. The movie tells it differently, but I still enjoyed it though.

Re: How is the book? (Heart of the Sea)

It is awesome! It manages to read almost entirely like a novel even though it's non-fiction which is quite a feat. I usually have a tough time getting into non-fiction books, biographies, history and so on but this one I could not put down. I AM somewhat interested in history and true stories but when I actually try to read it I just find it way too dry and dullmaybe a short-coming on my own part, I admit. At any rate, this was not the case here.

If you liked the movie at all then I think you will like the book. You may also want to pick up "The Loss of the Ship Essex, Sunk by a Whale" which is more or less the collected first-person accounts of the disaster from the men who were actually on the ship. Part of the reason reading ITHOTS and this book is interesting is that you have to wonder if Chase bent the truth a bit himself to make himself look better. Really fascinating stuff. Hope you enjoy it!

"Why couldn't the monkey arrange this from INSIDE the garbage can?"

Re: How is the book? (Heart of the Sea)

As others have mentioned, it's excellent. I'm actually reading it now for the second time.

Re: How is the book? (Heart of the Sea)

I bought In the Heart of the Sea: Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex on a freind's recommendation.

The book was read in 1 sitting. I tried to put it down and go to sleep but could not.

Re: How is the book? (Heart of the Sea)

I know you've had six replies saying this now, but here's another: It's excellent, gripping and beautifully written, I think you'll love it!

Definitely one of my favourite pieces of historical nonfiction.

Re: How is the book? (Heart of the Sea)

I read it at a friend's insistence, but it really is quite dark and grim. It could hardly be otherwise and give a full account of what happened to the men.

Re: How is the book? (Heart of the Sea)

It is a very excellent book I'm reading it right now.

Re: How is the book? (Heart of the Sea)

The book is excellent. I have read several of Nathanial Philbrick's books and he is a fine historical writer. I sent him a letter once about an idea I had for a book and he wrote back a nice letter of encouragement.

Re: How is the book? (Heart of the Sea)

Excellent !! I burned through it in a day which is unusual for me for a non-fiction work. Currently enjoying the author's work "The Mayflower." (I heard FX is working on a screen production.) You may want to check out "Ahab's Wife". Although it a bit of a challenge to get through, I love anything about 19th century nautical lore. (esp. as it relates to the Essex.)

Re: How is the book? (Heart of the Sea)

The book is MUCH better than this movie.

Re: How is the book? (Heart of the Sea)

You would have read the book by now probably but I thoroughly enjoyed it. So graphic in places but utterly compelling and makes me want to read more by the author.

Re: How is the book? (Heart of the Sea)

I loved the book. Read it a number of years ago. This movie will not equal the book I can almost guarantee it.

Re: How is the book? (Heart of the Sea)

The book is fantastic, read it about ten years ago, never forgot itmuch better than this boring movie(although the whale vs ship scene was great)Its an incredible true story of survival, as well as being the only time in history where a whale actually attacked a ship
