Rillington Place : Enough with the damn soundtrack!

Enough with the damn soundtrack!

Never heard so much oppressive, dramatic and portentious "evil" music in one BBC drama before, it's not really needed. I doubt Christie was actually THAT evil.

Why are you here if you haven't seen the movie yet?

Re: Enough with the damn soundtrack!

This series has one of the most intrusive and overbearing soundtracks I've ever heard. But I also had the nagging feeling I'd heard the music before and, true enough, it's directed by the same guy who did last year's version of And Then There Were None, which had practically the exact same soundtrack, consisting of nothing but a clichd "dreamy", "floating" ambient/electronica cue and a thick wall of "ominous" drone that never relents, or even varies in pitch. Terrible.

Re: Enough with the damn soundtrack!

You doubt that Christie was that evil?!?!?

Re: Enough with the damn soundtrack!

He was merely a bit of a lad that was misunderstood.

Re: Enough with the damn soundtrack!

No he was so evil that that ambient pervasive "sense of dread" music followed him wherever he went. Quite striking for a man living in mid-20th century London.

PS I like the soundtrack - for me it complements the wonderful sets and the low-key acting, particular the sense that Christie's influence slowly ensnares Ethel and others around him. I can why some object to it as too intrusive though.

"I doubt Christie was actually THAT evil."
Where's the harm in a bit of serial murder and necrophilia?
Can't a man enjoy himself??

:-)

The soundtrack definitely lacks subtlety.
Welcome to the world of 'musicians' and 'sound engineers' who don't understand the phrase "Less is more".

Re: Enough with the damn soundtrack!

It certainly needs a bit more Yakety Sax.

Re: Enough with the damn soundtrack!

Immensely annoying and overbearing sound design indeed. I like this kind of soundscapes or rather used to, before the industry copycats caught on. Turn on that omenous bass!

But not just that, the whole thing was uninspired a string of lazy, gimmicky, safe methods of sustaining drama, atmosphere and tension.

Some decent acting and art direction at least.
