Low-carb??

In the scene from 1/17 when the doc is at the grocery store, he's standing in an aisle marked, among other things, "LOW CARB". In 1980? I don't think soor am I nuts? [About this]

Re: Low-carb??

Not sure if there were actually "low carb" sections in the grocery store but the Atkins diet came out in the 70's and that was (and still is) a low carb diet.

Re: Low-carb??

I saw a bigger glaring error at the grocery. The cereal boxes were current designs, and prices were on the shelves. In 1980, the items would have had prices stuck on them. It was not easy to print labels to post on the shelves then. If there was, then it would have been large handwritten labels on the shelves.

The bouncing back and forth between the past and present on the show can be confusing, but I believe that Dr. K's grocery store scene actually was in the present, not back in the '80's. His wife has only been dead for about a year or so.

Re: Low-carb??

His wife had been dead about a year or so when the triplets were born which is 1980.

Re: Low-carb??

Yes. They were talking about The Empire Strikes Back and Ordinary People. In present day, the doctor would be about 108 years-old.

Re: Low-carb??

There was no low carb section in stores in 1980. Everyone was on the low fat bandwagon. They still are. Go to any Safeway and look at the yogurt. It's low fat, but loaded with sugar. Look at loaves of bread that brag "no added fats or oils." There was no low carb section in 1980 and there isn't any now. The Atkins diet, though it is a very good diet, was hated and mistrusted then and still is. "I can't do it. I need bread. I feel sick." "It's dangerous. You need grains." Whatever. Anyway, show me a store or restaurant with a low carb section or menu. And "low carb" meaning disgusting frankenfoods made with soy does not count.

Re: Low-carb??

Low carb was definitely around in the early 80s. My MIL at the time had the old Atkins book from the 70s, and I tried it for all of 2 days (probably in 1983)! LOL! But you're right that there were no products for low carb or grocery store sections for it.
