Moonlight : I'm not convinced Black is gay…

I'm not convinced Black is gay…

This person has had very little kindness and love in his life. Juan, the buddy, and Juan's girlfriend. When all of the boys bullied, only the friend stood by him. When the friend betrayed him with the beatdown, he took it and never retaliated against him. That was love not necessarily homosexual love, just love of someone who had a piece of someone's heart. In the final scene, he confessed that no one had touched him, male or female, he was not lusting for men or women. What he needed was what we saw at the end, he was being held from someone whom he knew and trusted from way back despite the betrayal. The buddy admitted that he had not been worth @#$. They could be honest with one another despite the years. The buddy was clearly bi-sexual-aside from their experience on the beach, what is there to confirm that black was gay outside of being traumatized by his experience and accepting closeness by someone he trusted?

The scene on the beach pretty much did it. Chiron and Kevin did have a sexual experience together. In the last segment, IIRC, Chiron told Kevin that no other man had touched him. He meant since that night on the beach.

It was pretty clear to me that Chiron was gay - he also had a wet dream about Kevin after getting his phone call - but it was also clear that he wasn't pursuing any kind of relationships at all before he decided to drive down to Miami. I agree that the ending was about Chiron reconnecting with someone he trusted and could open up to, and not necessarily about the two of them getting into a sexual relationship (I liked that the director ended the story where he did and left it up to our imagination as to what happened next). But it was also about Chiron being willing to accept his feelings, and the fact that was gay.

There may not have been a lot in the film to "confirm" that he was gay, but there was nothing in the film to even suggest that he might be straight. :)

Bingo! are you a writer/critic of movies? If not, you should consider it (smile). I like how you expressed your views!

two thumbs ups!

Re: I'm not convinced Black is gay…

You sound like you'd have a problem with it if he was gay. Homophobe.

Re: I'm not convinced Black is gay…

I think this movie was made for people like you, people confused by Black's sexuality and seem to struggle to simply accept it.

The more society accepts and understand people like Black, the less reclusive he will be.

Re: I'm not convinced Black is gay…

Perhaps a re-read of my post is in order. Where was there any hostility toward whichever sexuality?

Re: I'm not convinced Black is gay…

Sorry I sounded hostile.

It probably came out wrong.

What I meant was it's ALWAYS easy to say he's just lonely and withdrawn, rather than ACCEPT and admit that he is lonely and withdrawn BECAUSE he is gay.

This movie is for people with that mind-frame, IMO.

Re: I'm not convinced Black is gay…

It's not 'society', it's BLACK CULTURE. Machismo is prized and black subculture glorifies 'gangsta-ism'. Blacks have highest rate of HIV and it's because of pressure by other BLACKS, not 'SOCIETY' to man-up. They sleep with other guys then sleep with women.

Black culture is like the ultimate in peer pressure even at an adult level.

When obama was labeled 'not black enough' or when an adult black person has a conservative philosophical outlook, adult blacks label them as 'uncle toms'. YES, that means EVEN AS AN ADULT, black people are shamed for having their own opinions and even liberal white knights label them as sellouts to their race which is just about as racist as you can get.

Liberals are stupid.

Not very original, but "We accept the love we think we deserve." Brilliant

Re: I'm not convinced Black is gay…

@joshdestardi

There's some truth in what you said, but the fact is, macho attitudes and what you call "gangsterism" is glorified in practically EVERY culture on the planet. Black American culture don't not along have a claim on thatdon't even try to stick that on us, and act as if black people are the only people on earth with issues around all of that. It's the same thing in white culture, Latino culture, any other culture you can think of,and you know it. And there are the same homophobic attitudes in those cultures, too.

And enough of this "liberals are stupid" bull****. It was liberals who started the civil rights movements, the women's movements, the environmental movementpractically any movement that has benefitted society in the last 50 or 60 years or so. It's just plain stupid to paint all black people as being the same any more than you can claim that all white liberals are the same. Plus all liberals aren't white either (another big fat assumption you're made.) I wish conservatives would stop dragging their damn political opinions into EVERYTHING on these boards where it's not even needed. The movie isn't even about politics, so why even bring any of that up here? That's not even what the film is about.

Re: I'm not convinced Black is gay…

I have a similar theory in that I think the beach offered Chiron a private space with someone he really trusted to experiment with his sexuality. It kinda goes back to that scene with Chiron as a kid with all the other ones, standing in a circle comparing their dicks. No real label defines it other than being curious.

Trying to create a channel based on interpreting, reviewing, and even giving you something to laugh about film. Hope you enjoy what you see. Thanks in advance.

Review of the film here-

Re: I'm not convinced Black is gay…

Agreed. He seemed very withdrawn and just going with life.

I love the way you laugh.

Re: I'm not convinced Black is gay…

yeah i thought it was just that he had no friends, no father, no love so this friend was all of that to him

Re: I'm not convinced Black is gay…

He's gay. Don't take my word for it. Ask the writer and director.

This ^^

Re: I'm not convinced Black is gay…

The only thing I will say is, this movie makes a strong case for the "nurture" argument of homosexualitythat it develops in life from a variety of different influences.

He was definitely a homosexual, though. His oppressive community - peers, mother, friends, etc - didn't allow him to explore that avenue, and he couldn't confront his sexuality with his lifestyle.

Re: I'm not convinced Black is gay…

Is he gay? Well he let a man jerk him off on a beach, and had a wet dream about the same guy, over 10 yrs later. I'd say that hes gay. But I also think he was lonely too.

Actually, Chiron had the wet dream when he was a teenager in school. It was after Kevin told him he had detention for banging some trick in the stairwell.

Re: I'm not convinced Black is gay…

He had two dreams.

The first is as you describe where Kevin is banging her while he sleeps over.

The second was the morning after Juan called, when they were both grown up.

You mean Kevin, not Juan. Juan was the drug dealer who taught Chiron (Little) how to swim but who was dead by the time Chiron was a teenager. Kevin is the guy who befriends Little, has a sexual encounter with Chiron on the beach, and then makes dinner for Black when they are both adults.

Corrected

You're absolutely right! I corrected my response.

Wouldn't be the first time I got names mixed up, won't be the last.

Part of the nurture element.

Re: I'm not convinced Black is gay…

Yep, just two buddies, doing friendly hetero things, having wet friendly dreams about each other~

He said no other man touched him, he didn't mention women.

Re: I'm not convinced Black is gay…

To OP

"I'm not convinced Black is gay"

You don't have to.
That's the beauty of the movie.
He is just someone. Looking for love. If it's from vaginas or penis, doesn't matter. He is only a sensible guy that needs care.
No need for labels.
