Moonlight : The reason why black actors aren't nominated.
Re: The reason why black actors aren't nominated.
I live in a small/median-sized city with an Air Force base being the largest employer in the area. The only movies we get at our theater are big budget fair. The only time I see independent movies are when they're released on In Demand, on DVD, or watching it on Sundance or IFC. I would love to see these movies when they're released, but we don't get them in my area. And I won't drive 2+ hours to Atlanta just to see a movie.
Re: The reason why black actors aren't nominated.
There's definitely some truth to what you're saying.
Re: The reason why black actors aren't nominated.
I think it is more complicated than what the OP is saying. The OP is generalizing black people MOST PEOPLE regardless of race want to be entertained. Nate Parker that idiot tried to GUILT TRIP black people to see his stupid movie Birth of A Nation and it BOMBED at the box office. Why should black people waste their hard earned movie watching another boring slavery flick? Also, the Madea movies have CROSSED OVER the latest one had 40% audience NOT AFRICAN AMERICAN. Also, the OP is ignorant to think black people in general got the power to decide which films get Oscar nominations. The people who DECIDE who gets nominated for Oscars are WHITE PEOPLE. Last time I checked the Academy is MOSTLY WHITE AND MALE. SO again, the OP is criticizing black people yet ignoring the fact the people who have POWER ARE WHITE PEOPLE.
Re: The reason why black actors aren't nominated.
There's definitely some truth in the OP's argument, however it goes far beyond that.

Re: The reason why black actors aren't nominated.
Steven Morrissey is the ignorant one. All I said that if more independent movies with black people are supported by black people, then more would get made. Studios make dumb movies with black people in them, because that is what they many black people go to see. I don't care about who is in the Academy or not, FIRST YOU NEED GOOD MOVIES. NO MOVIES NO NOMINATIONS. Simple as that. It doesn't matter how many blacks vote, you first need the movies.
Re: The reason why black actors aren't nominated.
modica, again you come across as ignorant, why would black people automatically support an independent film just because black actors are in it? You are making generalizations about black people. Black people want to see GOOD MOVIES. Nate Parker independent film Birth of A Nation bombed despite Parker trying to guilt trip black people into seeing his lame slavery movie. A movie independent or released by a big studio NEEDS TO BE A GOOD MOVIE. And also who has the POWER to decide which movies get nominated or not? Are you really that stupid? The Academy is 99% WHITE AND MOSTLY MALE. You criticize black people yet ignore the point WHITE MEN decide what is considered a GOOD or BAD MOVIE? Don't you see how RACIST THIS IS! So basically black artists have to make movies which appeal to white people in order to get recognition. I think that is messed up to be honest. Are you really that ignorant to NOT think racial biases and prejudices do NOT come into play. Last time I checked the blacks who DO win Oscars often win for degrading and pathetic roles. Two black women won Oscars for playing MAIDS, Lupita Nyongo won for playing a SLAVE LOL! Halle Berry won for playing a SLUT and WHORE in Monsters Ball. Yeah, that is something to be proud of. And again who made the decision to give these women their Oscars for stereotypical roles WHITE MEN.
Re: The reason why black actors aren't nominated.
I'll bite.
Keep in mind, the head of the Academy is in fact black and she made a big deal about a diverse Academy membership and with that said, It'll be interesting to see how this year's nominations go.
Also, Denzel won an Oscar for playing a crooked cop and yet Javier Bardiem also won for playing a cold-blooded hitman.
As for your so-called "slut/whore" theory, Mira Sorvino won for playing a hooker and
Charlize Theron won for playing a real life serial killer.
Plus, for maids, Lynn Redgrave was nominated for playing a maid in Gods & Monsters and Helen Mirren was also nominated for playing a maid in Gosford Park.
It basically has everything to with how strong the studios push their nominee choices and how strongly will they bri..convince voters. By the way, 12 Years A Slave won best picture and the Academy voters never even saw it.
It's not really about race or prejudices the way you see it and when you really look at it an Oscar is not a measuring stick of quality. I mean Crash won instead of Brokeback Mountain, Shakespeare in Love won instead of Saving Private Ryan and The English Patient won instead of Fargo.

Re: The reason why black actors aren't nominated.
I agree with you, especially about this movie in particular because we really need more films from different filmmakers of different races. This is one of the few dramas I can remember dealing primarily with the problems faced by black men, when over the year you get more than a hundred it seems about white people.

The fact is you are telling the truth because when I go I can usually count my people on one hand.
