What to do about the three point shot in the NBA?

I know this has likely been discussed a lot. I think it warrants further discussion.

The three has turned the NBA into a snooze fest. All a player has to do is master several different shots and hit consistently from downtown. The Splash Brothers are boring.

So what to do?

Some say eliminate the corner 3. That is likely a good idea.

One sportswriter a while back suggested they make the 3 point line akin to the different distances in baseball parks to hit a home run. Some ball parts have a bigger playing field than others.

So make the three different distances at different courts. If the line varied several feet at different courts it would make the three much more meaningful. The percentage of shots made would plummet.

This actually seems like a good idea.

Yes?

I still think baseball should allow home teams to decide whether the bases at their stadium are run counterclockwise or clockwise.

If you run left instead of right to get to 1st base, teams would build their teams differently and have to have both left-handers and right-handers available at all positions in order to play at home and on the road.

Where in TX do you live? I'm in Dallas and have been trying to get to as many live games in person as I can since I've been here. Wish I had tickets to today's playoff game.

Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe f_uck yourself.

Austin - Only pro game I've been to close to here was a deadly dull Spurs win over Portland at the Alamodome. And one Texas Stars AHL hockey game. [edit]

His what?

And who?

Re: What to do about the three point shot in the NBA?

I'm not a huge basketball fan; always found it one of those games, along with tennis far more enjoyable to play than to watch, though I'm a casual observer, have been to some NBA games and attend my sons high school games.

I get that at NBA level and yeah there are some problems that could be fixed. You could reduce the size of the rim ever so slightly, make the circle further away or maybe discourage long range shots by introducing 3 points for a dunk too.

That said, even the height of the rim is just too low now at that level. Athletic ability and physical presence or prowess just keeps improving, yet the height of the rim hasn't changed.

Yes, eliminate the corner 3's and have the center line be pushed back 8-12 inches.

Re: What to do about the three point shot in the NBA?

The current "jack up 3s" NBA is really boring.

Oh I understand boring... like this thread.

The Splash Brothers are NOT boring.

Re: What to do about the three point shot in the NBA?

Did you mean "Come on folks, I defy you."

I'm not a basketball fan but I watch some playoff games usually the NBA Finals best 4 of 7 games.

I am bored with the superfluous three point shots we see nowadays. Perhaps it is because I have an IQ in 3 digits (unlike you).

After reading your posts in this thread, I, nor does anyone else, believe you have an IQ that is 3 digits. Sorry, dummy. Ain't happening.

So you know what everyone else who posted on this thread thinks? You are both stupid and presumptuous.

Read the replies. Some posters agree with me.

Jackass.

I appreciate you signing your post like that. That took guts. And it's true, usually guys who claim to have IQs don't and usually are jackasses. Again, thanks for signing your post correctly. That was a nice thing to do.

LOL. I never get it when you idiots warn people they're going on your ignore list. No one gives a f@ck jackass. Seriously, you're awful at this.

Re: What to do about the three point shot in the NBA?

The latter idea is terrible. It gives a league with already a big homecourt advantage a much bigger one.

Hurts them on the road too. I got the idea from Wired.

I realize the suggestion is radical. Here are some suggesions from Wired-

https://www.wired.com/2016/06/three-ideas-remaking-three-point-shot/

Here is another- allow hand-checking to defenders. It was made a foul because the NBA wanted more threes.

One of the ideas expressed listed in the Wired article is to "do nothing".

Ultimately it is what is best for business, the game and the fans.

Just because I don't like the plethora of threes is of no concern to the NBA. Perhaps nothing should be done.

Re: What to do about the three point shot in the NBA?

Part of the fun of the NBA is that you can reasonably compare players across eras and teams, and that all gets thrown out the window if you start moving the three-point line around randomly. Plus the problem with that homecourt advantage problem is that you don't play each team the same number of times at home as on the road. You do for teams in your division and teams in the opposing conference, but you play the other 36 games among ten teams. This seems fine because you still play 41 home and 41 road games, until you realize that this could mean the Warriors (for example) play the Spurs twice in San Antonio and only once in Oakland. Right now it's not that big a deal but you start moving that three point line around and the home court advantage balloons to +/- 10 points and it starts getting too significant in the end-of-the-season standings.

And yeah, the NBA is doing fine. Some people won't like the three-point barrage but while it seems like guys are just standing around the arc waiting for the ball, it actually has opened the floor up for a lot more cutting and screening. Mostly gone are the back-to-the-basket slogs of Sir Charles and Shaq. It makes the product look a little weaker because there are more threes and lay-ups, but it's all still being earned.

Re: What to do about the three point shot in the NBA?

I think it's fine how it is right now. Shooting from long range would instantly go out of style without it. It's the only way to keep the game wider open.
