Re: Rate the Laika films
Wow, such hate for the Boxtrolls here! Honestly for me, Coraline stands out as the definite best at a 9/10. The rest, including Kubo, are all a solid 8/10. I don't think Laika has made a bad film, unless you count Corpse Bride which I don't.

Re: Rate the Laika films
I agree with you Haruhi. I liked Boxtrolls very much. Its my least favorite of the 4 but its still very good. I don't get people putting space between 3rd place and 4th.

Re: Rate the Laika films
It's not the Boxtrolls was bad. It was just fair/average for me. IMHO, Coraline, Paranorman, & Kubo were just on a different level and the top three I have ranked I feel are pretty close in quality. Which is why I have them grouped together with Boxtrolls just a little further down

I really loved Kubo, and I think it's possibly a better made movie than ParaNorman, but ParaNorman just hits all the right notes for me. I need to rewatch Coraline, I haven't seen it since it was in theaters.

Re: Rate the Laika films
I would rank the same except, for me it's been so long since I've seen Coraline I wouldn't feel comfortable ranking it

Coraline/Kubo/ParaNorman - 9/10
The Boxtrolls - 7.5/10

This is pretty much where I am, though I may give Coraline a 9, ParaNorman/Kubo the 8.5, and Boxtrolls the 7.5.
I actually own all of them!

Re: Rate the Laika films
I can't properly rank them since I've yet to see Paranorman or the Boxtrolls and need to re-watch Coraline. Kubo was superb though.
Re: Rate the Laika films
Really difficult question!
I think I'll stick with:
1. ParaNorman
2. Coraline
3. Boxtrolls
4. Kubo and the Two Strings
Don't get me wrong. Kubo was beautifully animated and the story was interesting. It's just that the pace was a tad bit too slow sometimes for my taste and I'm not a big fan of Japanese mythology/Samurai tales.
ParaNorman was the ultimate tribute to 80's movies and I just love creepy stuff, hence why Coraline takes the second place. Also, while Boxtrolls is definitely the weirdest of the four, I loved the main character and the boxtrolls themselves.

Re: Rate the Laika films
I like Laika's work. They do creative and different animation and I would like to see them do well.
That said, by the nature of their story-telling they aren't likely to get the same type of mass appeal that Disney/Pixar get. Perhaps that's a good thing.
I'd rate them as follows:
Kubo - 8/10
Coraline - 7.5/10
Paranorman - 7/10
Boxtrolls - 6.5/10

Interesting how BoxTrolls take heat here. I found it refreshingly different and sort of old school and I think very creative, steps above the rest in the landscape of animations. Reminded me of the brilliant " The Pinchcliffe Grand Prix (1975)" in both style and story. To me BoxTrolls stand out and you really get the feel of the stop motion too - which I suppose is sort of the point of still doing it this way.
Caroline was a masterpiece but in fairness not unique or completely out of the box, so to speak. Yet It takes the lead as it is overall better constructed and just beautiful all the way through.
ParaNorman was fine but unlike the consensus here, I cannot see it is all that. MInstream and forgettable. Fine indeed and surely worth a Sunday afternoon, but not in the league of its brothers and sisters.

Haven't yet seen the BT, but
1. Coraline
2. ParaNorman
3. Kubo
Anyone rating Kubo higher than Coraline have no idea how consistent and magnifficent the later is, and how many weak points Kubo does (it's still a good movie though)

Re: Rate the Laika films
'Kubo', 'Coraline', and 'Paranorman' I rated 9/10, 'Corpse Bride' and 'Boxtrolls' I rated 8. My two favourites are 'Coraline' and 'Kubo', with 'Kubo' getting the slight edge because. while 'Coraline' is very well-crafted visually , it is for me Laika's most visually exquisite film and it connected with me more emotionally.

Wow I really love this studio. They are the next Pixar for me.
And if Pixar keeps making mediocre sequels instead of original films Laika may take the top spot for me.
