One interesting thing that we have learned from performance capture. A still may look like a real photo, but it's when it moves you can tell how realistic it looks. Of all the things you can recreate on a computer, the human face is the most difficult. And it looks like it is the eyes that's the most difficult task. In The Polar Express and Beowulf, it is the "dead eyes" that is getting the most complaints.
Based on this, one can assume that of all the things to imitate, it's the human eyes that's most difficult. Maybe that's why they say the eyes are the soul's mirror, because they are the most complex part of our expressions and gives away much of our inner self.
