Games: Other Games : MURRCHER IDOL: REVENGE OF THE CAPSLOCK (WINNER ANNOUNCED)

Re: ROUND 2 RESULTS OMG/AMG/WOOOOOO

You always complain about indie/hipster songs, but you often send the most indie/hipster songs.

Maybe I am just smart and know who the judges are

I NEVER COMPLAIN ABOUT INDIE MUSIC THOUGH, I COMPLAIN ABOUT INDIE COVERS, BUT NOT INDIE MUSIC

And I kind of liked that song I sent. I like his voice.

If this theme is about p*ssy, I hope next week's theme is about 🐓

Oh it's like slang. From...England

Re: ROUND 2 RESULTS OMG/AMG/WOOOOOO

Guys, you all (most of you excitedly) signed up to play a game that had this in the description:

CHERRY and I have decided to host a new Idol game, unlike any other. Themes will be... interesting.

So stop acting surprised haha. Anyway, to answer Melanie, no not all themes will be about sex or murder, but we do have a bunch lined up that are creative and outside the box. But some of them are nice things.

Henryyyy can't do two sex parts back to back, the people will revolt!

Misty <3

Okay back to sleep. I really need to stop checking my phone when I get up to pee haha.

With all this fever in my mind I could drown in your kerosene eyes

Re: ROUND 2 RESULTS OMG/AMG/WOOOOOO

These are actually the only 2 crass themes we've come up with (so far), with plenty more that are perfectly nice.

And they're not even especially crass, or don't need to be. Last round, we got some beautifully challenging songs about race relations, faults in the justice system, anesthetizing bitter-sweet Americana fantasies, the songwriter's own fears and insecurities amplified by sympathizing with a killer as a device to express that... Seriously, go listen to some of the songs people chose. And there are more (beyond what I mentioned in the comments) by Leadbelly, Johnny Cash, David Bowie, Immortal Technique, etc... An entire tradition in traditional folk music, the murder ballad. A plot device in some music theater/cabaret classics from the 1920s. ALL of it was available for your choosing, ALL of it could be found with a search and a bit of time looking through the results and *listening to music*. Honestly, one of the best Idol rounds I've ever judged, so thank you all.

This round... pretty similar. I just used ole Google to find a list, and in the first 3 pages found a dozen or so songs by some very *serious* artists, not trashy at all, exploring some themes well beyond just "pussy". And probably as many songs I've never even heard of. And some trashy songs are great, too - this theme was based on our mutual appreciation for one such song, so you're more than welcome to send songs like that.

The point of the themes is to make people think about what they're picking, to actually listen to songs, rather than just thinking, "oh, they both like indie, folky stuff... I'll send Mumford & Sons" (a band neither of us like, btw). Or, "oh, that Slowdive song did really well before, I'll send it". Whether you listen to 2 songs or 20 songs when making your decision, you have to actually think about what the band/artist is conveying (both for the theme, and for your own sensibilities). It gives you the option to explore songs of so many different genres, while seeing how one topical theme can be so different from genre to genre, songwriter to songwriter. Or not... or find the same list I did and pick the first song on the list (hey, it might be a great song). It's up to you.

So no, not all of these themes will be crass (most won't), but most will be as challenging or as simple/topical as YOU want them to be.

THEME FOUR AMG BRO

Really sad to see you go, Pete. You're an amazing player and I often love your choices... except that one. God, definitely not that one.

Well, dipping into that pussy got everyone wet*, so your next theme is...

RAIN SONGS

It's raining today! I love the rain! Yes, you are sending PRO-rain songs. None of that anti-rain crap where the singer complains about the best weather event ever, wishing the disgusting sun would shine. Rainy days are the best ever, there's nothing like wandering through the streets late at night in the rain, or sitting on a stormy beach and spacing, or even just listening to it from indoors.

I reiterate, the songs must not be anti-rain. They don't necessarily have to be pro-rain, as long as rain is a prominent theme in the song and it's not maligned, I'll accept it. A little maligning might be accepted if it's celebrated at another point in the song (I'm thinking of a specific song). "No Rain" is banned (don't even try...).

Send to me, Tomcat Murr. Songs due by Saturday 5/28 @ noon CCT, but sooner would be better. Nat, you can send 2 songs this round.

* yes, clumsily linking each theme is a recurring motif we're sticking with for now. Sorry.

Re: THEME FOUR AMG BRO

To clarify some confusion with this theme: a song will be counted as rain-friendly even if its pro-rain quality involves the singer being depressed and taking comfort in the rain because of their depression, or any similar theme. As long as rain isn't explicitly maligned or told to go away, and rain is good (or even passively acceptable) per whatever the singer's mental state, it'll be accepted. Just no "I can see clearly nowwwwww the rain is goooone!" or BS like that. If in doubt about a song, ask me.

Re: THEME FOUR AMG BRO

Cher: LMAO THIS IS TO THE TUNE OF KOKOMO <3 Amazing. This is a really funny song, VERY KATHY. OMG, RANDOM TIDBIT THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANYTHING, BUT REMEMBER THAT LESBIAN SONG WITH THE TREES WITH VAGINAS? TOTALLY GOING TO GO FIND THAT AFTER I AM DONE WITH THIS ROUND. Aw, there is even a line in French for you I’ll eat your tuna casserole girl

Hahaha yes I think that was Natcher Idol season 1 <3. Yay thanks Cherry for saving me. Fack you Murr <3.

K so basically Adele's Set Fire to the Rain would work?

stupid trash bitch of my heart <3

Re: THEME FOUR AMG BRO

Setting fire to rain, if possible, would result in a lot of water vapor (and fire). It's literally destroying the rain.

Re: THEME FOUR AMG BRO

To update, re: DEADLINE: I realized that I won't even be home, and likely not getting cell reception, by the deadline tomorrow. So if everyone can get their songs in before, I'll send them to Cherry before I leave. If not, the deadline will be extended until I get home, around 8-9pm. Try to send before, but if you need the extra time, that's fine. I won't be around to send songs out at the deadline, anyway. However, if you haven't sent by around 9am tomorrow, PLEASE send a back-up or two, because I won't be around to tell you whether a song counts/someone's already sent it.

ROUND 4 RESULTZ, FOLKZ

Dear friends, I regret to inform you that we have results.

RAIN SONGS

Melanie
Hilary Duff - Come Clean
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnQbyj27-oY

Cherry: Lollll I remember this song. I figured someone would send this. PROBABLY KATHY. Omg this video is so lulztastic with it's early 00s technology, the guy with his flip phone with an antennae that won't work in the rain <3 Anyway if this song came out now I would probably be like um yeah no, but I remember listening to this when I was like 19 and it just came out and I'M NOT GONNA LIE, I USED TO LIKE IT. IT'S MAKING ME NOSTALGIC haha I remember my cousin was a big fan, and me and her and her boyfriend would always hang out and this song makes me think of that. Plus, I'm not gonna lie, I do like the line about the rain washing away your sanity. That's actually pretty good, and more in depth than you'd expect from Lizzie McGuire.

Murr: Oh, I kind of remember this song. Hilary Duff: The Once and Future Lizzie McGuire. I'm pretty sure this song was on the N. Or the Disney Channel (I watched for Boy Meets World, k?). A few months back I was in some hotel room and had TV Land on, and she's in a new(ish) show called "Younger", and it wasn't bad... surprisingly. I remember kind of liking it at the time, but not enough to put myself on the line by telling people that. I think, maybe because of Lizzie McGuire, everyone of my age group has a fondness for her. I do like it alright, actually... but I also appreciate how you're kind of doing the same to me that I did to you guys in Natlanie Idol.

Tom
The Fray - Rainy Zurich
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DVlnfEWekM

Cherry: I used to listen to the Fray a really long time ago, like when they came out with that How to Save a Life album, I used to listen to that a lot, but I never really listened to them much after that. I like the singer's voice, too lazy to look up his name, but their songs can be kinda hit or miss I guess because I like the ones with piano as a primary instrument, but a lot of their songs the guitar kind of drowns out the piano, and that was what made them stand out so... this is okay though. It has that classic Fray sound. I'll be honest, I am listening to this for the second time though, and I can barely make out anything he's singing except for part of the chorus, haha. I don't know if the music is too loud for the singing or if the lyrics are really just that forgettable. It's okay.

Murr: Hm. So, admittedly, I can't think of a single song by The Fray except "How to Save a Life", which I kind of hate. This is interesting, though; it's like the poppier side of Black Lab or Jump, Little Children (both bands I love, so both are good comparisons). It's so sickeningly romantic, but in a good way. In that Smallville/Dawson's Creek kind of way where you're (the proverbial "you", ie: me) ditching school to catch episodes on morning syndication and otherwise taping it (then hiding the tapes) when you can because it's too embarrassing to try watching when anyone else is home. heh. However, so amazing. It also mentions floating... floating + rain = the dream, man. When I saw The Fray's name come up, I was scared. But, ya know... solid pick.

Nat, Song 1 - TIED WITH SONG 2!
The Jesus And Mary Chain - Happy When It Rains
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5x1F9ohRa4

Cherry: Ugh, stop trying to make this band happen, guys. Haha. I remember one song by them, forget what it's called but I'd remember if I saw the title, anyway, it got sent to me twice, and neither time I was really a fan. Let's see how this one goes. It's okay. Honestly, I was expecting these rain songs to be more melancholy. Like I want my rain songs to be slow and moody, not rocking. Haha I see a song suggestion on the side by them called April Skies. Is rain a recurring theme with them? I do like the line "your lips spoke gold and honey"

Murr: I like how you played the 2 song thing. It seems you picked one for me and one for Cherry, and wanted to see whose perfect score beats the other's. I love The Jesus and Mary Chain (I got to see them live a few years ago, and Jim Reid is still a G) and Ilove this song for so many reasons (rain being one of them), and "Darklands" is probably my favorite of their albums. Other songs I was going for with this theme: Scott Walker's "It's Raining Today" (hinted at in the theme post), A.A. Bondy's "Damn the Rain" (also hinted at in the post with "I love the rain"), Jump Little Children's "Rains In Asia", Bob Dylan's "Buckets of Rain"... The Cure's "Plainsong" also crossed my mind, but I probably wouldn't have counted it for the purpose of this theme. Anyway, but also this. "And we tried so hard, and we looked so good / And we lived our lives in black...... you were my sunny day rain / you were the clouds in the sky / you were the darkest sky / but your lips spoke gold and honey / so, that's why I'm happy when it rains, I'm happy when it pours...". Obviously the song is about completely fcked up, dysfunctional relationship, but being all grossly in love with/in awe of the person, anyway. Lolz. But the song is amazing. It just keeps getting louder and louder, more aggressive but also more shimmering as it goes on. Amazing song. "And if I tell you something, you take me back to nothing... and I'm happy now, and I'm happy when it rains!"

Nat, Song 2 - TIED WITH SONG 1!
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Naked In The Rain
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OY1ufFfo3tw

Cherry: Someone picked this for me <3 fun fact, in one of my seasons of Cherry Idol I did a theme to send songs with naked in the title, and this was totally one of the songs I wanted to get submitted, and no one picked it. Oddly it didn't even cross my head for this theme, then I saw it was on the list of songs Murr sent me and I was like yesssss. Especially since I haven't really loved any of the songs yet, this is great. This is a great song, probably my second favorite off this album. It's not moody like I was just wishing for, but it's fun! Let's get naked in the rain! woo! Plus the instruments are fantastic like always.

Murr: And here you have what will probably be Cherry's perfect score. I hope mine wins out. It might not, though... because musically this is pretty good, but lyrically I love it. "Naked in the rain with a black tattoo, running through the woods laughing at the blues" and "losing my taste for the human race, social grace is a waste of time" and "I never met an animal I didn't like... don't you know that dog is man's best friend" and "Doctor Doolittle, what's your secret? Give it to me, doctor - don't keep it" and "I'm in love with the wilderness" and... Yeah. Anyone who knows me outside of my online ramblings will get it. It's fcking perfect. And John Frusciante on guitar, man... Again, as much as I love Dave Navarro (and, imo, Jane's Addiction >>>>>> Red Hot Chili Peppers, though I do like them), the band has always been better with John. His style is perfect for their sound. So, yeah, this one will probably be your higher scoring song (but I'm still pulling for Jesus and Mary Chain... always have hope, kids).

Neil
The Cowsills - The Rain, the park, and Other Things
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrkG37NQ6GY

Cherry: Okay um, the title of this song is amazing. Oh this is like from the 60's, it has a very nice retro sound. WTF I JUST LOOKED THEM UP. IS THIS LIKE A REAL LIFE THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY? Haha awesome. This is cute, and super catchy. Still waiting for my moody songs, but this is fun.

Murr: I had completely forgotten about this song. I love how rain plays into it... she's there and he falls in love while it's raining, then the sun comes to ruin everything/she disappears because the sun fcking sucks. That's how I choose to take it, anyway. I love how chaotically ornate the arrangement is, too: harp, xylophone, that piercing thing that is probably an electric keyboard, the "happyyyy" voices, this oddly garage-sounding guitar chord progression low in the mix... Nice pick, Bull.

Andre
Damien Jurado - Maraqopa
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=naqFb_5HBhA

Cherry: Oh here we go. This has a more moody rainy sound. Lol at the picture in the video being a tree on a sunny fall day. WHOEVER MADE THE VIDEO OBVIOUSLY DIDN'T GET THE MEMO ABOUT RAIN SONGS. I'm guessing Andre sent this, haha. Either that or someone googled RAIN SONGZ and saw this and remembered Murr likes him Btw, it says this video has 42,500 views, which sounds like such a nice number and I am RUINING IT NOW. Also Murr just showed me a video and now I am too busy crying about dogs.

Murr: Ha, I honestly thought you'd pick up on some of my hints in the original post. Regardless, you ended up with a great pick. I try hard to not be like, "THANK YOU FOR PICKING THIS SONG!" when people submit, and try equally as hard to not be like, "yes it counts, but please don't pick that... I'm begging you!" I just want to nurture all of you, but ultimately someone wins and everyone else is eliminated. It's heartbreaking hosting these things. So, the rain line in this is minimal, of course, but it actually has rain sounds running through the entire song, and the entire first verse (in a song with only 2 verses) leads to it. There's such a beautiful naturalistic, even almost animistic, theme in this song, in a song that holds such loft themes as life and death and God, with rain carrying that. So many of my favorite themes in one song. There's this interesting Hopi belief that rain itself was a gift from the deceased, and that the deceased return to the world through rain. "It's your oldest fear, that the love you can hear will go... To be one with the sky, where the souls all collide, turn to gold / We are rain"... Lovely. Great pick.

Misty
Luke Bryan - Rain Is A Good Thing
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VKy69sE4VY

Cherry: ...why am I listening to a farmer talking? Why did you send me a country song? Ugh, Murr. DAMMIT MURR DON'T ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO SEND *beep* LIKE THIS. OMFG NO NO NO HE'S SINGING ABOUT WHISKEY I CAN'T PLZ MAKE IT STOP. This is like, SUPER COUNTRY. Whyyy. WHERE ARE MY I LOVE RAIN AND ALSO, I AM A MELANCHOLY BITCH SONGS. ...RAIN MAKES CORN CORN MAKES WHISKEY MAKE IT STOPPPPPP. HOW MANY REDNECKS CAN WE FIT IN A TRUCK, WE LOVE RAIN RAIN RAIN WHISKEY. T.ears

Murr: This is one of those, "please don't send this!" songs, biting my tongue (or, biting my fingers?). Cherry hates country. She even hates lots of country-ish songs by indie folk artists she otherwise likes. Anyway... "rain makes corn, corn makes whiskey..." That alone is justification for loving rain, right? No rain, no whiskey. Rain wins - flawless victory! And ah man, I really want to go to a concert when it's raining now. Damn, that would be incredible. The dog montages are also incredible. It's decent-good, I enjoy it but don't love it. Cherry may do something shocking, but I'm a little worried for you.

Kathy
Eurythmics - Here Comes The Rain Again
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzFnYcIqj6I

Cherry: amg they have songs other than Sweet Dreams? Haha. This is super 80's, which you know is not usually my thing, but it does have kind of a cool sound to it. I like the way the music keeps changing a bit throughout. The lyrics I could take or leave, but the music is pretty cool

Murr: I was shocked when you sent this and I realized no one else had yet. I mean... what??? This is a classic. Rocky coastline, waves, and birds... So much love in my cold dead heart right now. Admittedly, this sort of very angular drum machine + synth sound isn't usually my favorite, but it's something I sometimes like, and definitely not something I hate. "Here comes the rain again / Falling on my head like a memory / Falling on my head like a new emotion"... rain, memories, this idea of something happening and being born, in all its totality. I love how this is more or less a love song without being "I love you oh woah woah, baby baby". There's a severity to it, and openness to everything - both a revelation and a tragedy, this idea of just experiencing/feeling everything at once. So, great songwriting, so-so production. Really nice pick overall, WAY better than last round.

RTF
Claire Austin - Come Rain Or Come Shine
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLPRzmi57SU

Cherry: Aw Murr told me this is your great grandma? That's so cool. She has a really nice voice, must be where you get your musical inclinations from This is a really nice song, it would fit well in my current round of 50's idol haha. The music is jazzy and kind of moody (pop quiz kids, how many times have I used the word moody in my comments?) and her voice is great. Nice choice

Murr: I admit I wasn't sure whether or not I should count this. Rain or shine, with neither really being good or bad (aside from the implication of the idiom, of course). I decided to accept it because, with both (rain and shine), the association is good per the idiom... love, "with you always", etc... Plus, this song is a classic, and WTF THIS IS YOUR GREAT GRANDMOTHER?!?!?! I'm not sure if you were trolling with that or serious, but if it's true... wow. Those bass and guitar tones are incredible (honestly one of the best band performances I've heard of his song), and her voice is incredible. She has such a nice, subtle vibrato in her voice, and I love how she does that vibrato while her voice is softer/huskier, rather than when she's singing out more. Great pick (and I have a feeling Pete would love this and be happy someone chose a jazzy '50s song... It's kind of like you just spilled a 40oz for him... respect).

Henry
Led Zeppelin - The Rain Song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZ4uzD_hLds

Cherry: I am guessing you're counting on my score to get you by, because Murr hates Led Zeppelin haha. The song is inspired by George Harrison though! Anyway, this is a cool song, parts of it have that classic Zeppelin song, but it's slower overall, I don't know. MY DESCRIPTION GAME IS NOT AT IT'S PEAK TONIGHT, BUT I LIKE THIS. "Speak to me only with your eyes" <3

Murr: So, I hate Led Zeppelin for the most part, but they have 3 or so songs I like. This is one of them. Admittedly, I tend to like live versions of it better, but the studio version is good, too. Plant's voice is far less annoying than usual, and the guitar work is beautiful. There's this mellotron going through the song, and tremolo arm or some sort of bends and this kind of harp-like delay sound that I love. Even when they start rocking out, it's tasteful. Despite the title, the song doesn't have much to do with rain, but I guess the title sort of frames the rest as rain being the transitional force (which, as "deep" as it may be intended ultimately equates to the metaphor of rain = flowers), and that transition (represented as seasons - another revolutionary metaphor) being celebrated in the song. Blah blah blah. I'm eating almonds. Um, yeah... I can't ever say anything about Led Zeppelin without insulting them (heh), but I actually really do think this song is beautiful.

David
Garbage - Only Happy When It Rains
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpBFOJ3R0M4

Cherry: Ugh knew someone would send this. This song always gets sent in idol games. I guess it's decent though. I haven't heard it in awhile and it's good for the theme at least.

Murr: Was the video always this '90s? Shirley... damn, girl. Anyway... The idea of Butch Vig being a member of a band is still weird to me. It just doesn't feel right. Oh god, Shirley is so hot... OK, sorry. I loved this song back in the day, and loved Garbage. I lost interest in them shortly after, but for that brief time, they were one of my favorites. This fits the theme... depressive state, all that. But it does lack the shimmer of the J&MC song, where it's not just being in love with misery, but actually in love with someone who makes you miserable and thus, in a sort of Stockholm Syndrome way, loving those things that make you miserable. This is just happy being miserable... sort of, "whatever, beat me down, I don't give a fck". I like it, though. And Shirley Manson, seriously...

Scores up next, in just a few hours!

Re: ROUND 4 RESULTZ, FOLKZ

Scores!

17.5 NAT AGAIN! Congrats! 2 songs next round, you know the drill.

17 HENRY! and RTF le TAY!

16.5 ANDRE!

15 Neil!

14 Kaffy! and David!

13.5 Tom!

13 Mel!

MURRCHERLIMINATED: 8.5 Misty. Ugh. You're amazing. But this particular song, well... I kind of liked it but not enough, and Cherry really hated it (could you tell?) It's all Cherry's fault. I saw it coming and wanted to warn you so bad, but... I couldn't. Thank you so much for playing.

Cherry will be around with your next theme. Remember the clever lead-in, Cherry!

Re: ROUND 4 RESULTZ, FOLKZ

NICE! Top score with both songs!

It's not love, but it's pretty close. Hot fudge and a little smoke.

Theme Five

We're already all wet from the rain, so let's get things even wetter with some amazing sea legends. IT'S GOING TO BE MER-MAZING.

Theme 5: Mermaid Songs As some of you may know, I kinda love mermaids, despite my whole not being able to swim thing. Murr is a fan as well. AMG WE COULD CALL THEM MURRMAIDS. Anyway, for this theme you guys will be sending songs about mermaids (or selkies, sirens, other similar things). I REPEAT, THE THEME IS SONGS ABOUT MERMAIDS, NOT THE SOUNDTRACK TO THE LITTLE MERMAID. There's probably only 1 or 2 songs in that movie that would fit this theme anyway. If you REALLY want to send from there, it better be the one I think fits the theme and you better act fast haha. Anyway, Murr(maid) and I are excited about this theme, so please don't let us down, kids.

SEND SONGS TO MEEEEEEE 24 HOURS PLZ.

Re: Theme Five

Do they have to be mermaids or can they be mermen?

It's not love, but it's pretty close. Hot fudge and a little smoke.

Re: Theme Five

Haha it would be sexist to ban mermen, so go for it.

With all this fever in my mind I could drown in your kerosene eyes

Re: Theme Five

I ask as if it'll make it easier for me to find two songs that fit this weird ass theme

It's not love, but it's pretty close. Hot fudge and a little smoke.

Re: Theme Five

Thsnk you for having me in your game. I had a feeling I would leave with this song. I had alot of fun with the crazy themes.

Re: Theme Five

Misty! Glad you enjoyed, though.

NICE! Top score with both songs!

I lol'd when I saw that your songs tied with the high score. Amazing. Nicely done.

And just to let everyone know, I just thought of 7 mermaid and/or selkie songs off the top of my head, and will complain if no one chooses any of them. With love, of course.

Re: Theme Five

Just be thankful they didn't screw you over like they did me.

You did good. Your song was awesome. Sorry one note music listeners can't hear the good in anything but music that makes you wanna slit your wrists.

Re: MURRCHER IDOL: REVENGE OF THE CAPSLOCK (REALITY TV FREAK… SEND!!!)

Guys, I'm trying to judge mermaid songs, and Murr just keeps talking about Beyonce and telling me songs to listen to by her. I am afraid.

Also, Beyonce is banned throughout this game.

Songs for Mermaids

RTF:
My Jolly Sailor Bold [Mermaid Song]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0R--FtzSx2o

Murrmaid: Imma let you finish, but The Church has the BEST mermaid/selkie song of all time! (this is my obligatory intro rant, btw). There were a few songs I was hoping for this round, and some were sent, but the big one - which I put in my fcking profile to see if anyone would notice, is "Bel Air" by The Church. It's why I asked Cherry to include selkies in this theme (along with Tyranosaurus Rex's "Seal of Seasons"). It has 3 verses, centered around a selkie who lives a mundane life as a human that she's content with, while actual humans (in the other 2 verses) want to live someone else's life/are envious of what others have that they don't, while the selkie is just happy being human... but the narrator is envious of her and her husband and their peaceful life running a hotdog trailer (he feels that envy while chilling on the beach one day), and their landlord is envious of "all the people that he can never be". Just saying... keep in mind, kids. Anyway... so, they're mermaids, but the theme of the lyrics seems more siren-ish (though I don't think it was intended that way necessarily). The first mermaid is hot in a creepy way. Um, yeah. It's maybe a better movie scene than it is a song. There are probably better versions of this song to pick, tbf. But it's still nice enough and kind of creepy.

Chariel: If you were going to go with something from a movie, you should have picked the mermaid song in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire! Okay so the mermaids are hot. The main one kind of looks like Amanda Seyfried. I do like the VISUAL OF MERMAIDS, although that isn’t what I am supposed to be judging lol. The song itself is really short, but it does have kind of an eerie sound which is nice. Also lolz I have never seen this movie before and I am curious what happens next after she turned all sea monster looking.

Melanie:
TIM BUCKLEY - SONG TO THE SIRENS
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMTEtDBHGY4

Murrmaid: I would've preferred the studio version of this, but... This song is incredible. Tim's voice is incredible. When I saw people sent this, I was shocked I hadn't thought of it for the theme. I mean, this is kind of the ultimate "siren" song, no? "Well, I'm as puzzled as a newborn child / I'm as riddled as the tide / Should I stand amid the breakers? / Or shall I lie with death my bride?" So lovely. I feel like on this board so many people love Jeff Buckley, but Tim Buckley, who shot the beginnings of Jeff out of his very own penis, never gets the props he deserves. He has a very affected voice, really... this very refined pronunciation while singing, which is interesting. Incredible song. Well done! Also, Morning Glory came on autoplay right after... YES!

Chariel: So this is Jeff Buckley’s dad, that’s cool. Apparently this song is well-known (or Murr’s idea of well-known, which is sometimes questionable) and he yelled at me for not knowing it, haha. I disappoint this man daily <3 Anyway, I really like this song a lot, the lyrics are great, it paints a really nice picture of a sailor out on the sea and this siren (MERMAIDDDDD) luring him in and he is totally feeling it. But you know, sirens, SHE IS JUST LURING HIM TO DEATH AND STUFF. But it’s beautiful, sad and longing, just the kind of thing you want in a good mermaid theme. Excellent choice.

Henry:
Whispers of a Mermaid (stop at 3:35)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KE20r9WSM8g

Murrmaid: Ha! Did you even listen to this, or did you just find something with mermaid in the title and pick the first song? It's actually pretty. You might be alright. I like the chimey sounds, I guess?

Chariel: Lolz at you sending me a link called ONE HOUR OF CELTIC MERMAID MUSIC and for a second I panicked like omg do I have to listen to this whole thing, but then I looked and it is TOTALLY A FULL ALBUM, BROKEN INTO SONGS, SO I WAS LIKE BITCH, PICK ONE. The mermaid on the album cover is pretty, I actually really like the way it’s painted. Honestly, it’s kind of cool that someone put together a full hour of mermaid music. Anyway, this is really pretty, it does have kind of an ocean-like sound to it. I used to not be super into instrumental music because I like lyrics a lot, but the past few months I have gotten into it more, like I like to listen to instrumental stuff when I am working on writing, so I have something nice to listen to, but I am not distracted by the lyrics. So this is actually pretty cool, I may save the link to listen to again sometime. Also, you have inspired a future theme

Neil:
Train - Mermaid
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZ_VGbZd8No

Murrmaid: I have a confession to make: I loved Train's first album when it came out, and they had more of a roots rock sound. Then they pretty much immediately ruined that with the next album. And now, Train is... this. Oh, there's a Johnny Depp joke in this song. Pop culture reference, kids. "I like the beat" - that's something people say, right? It's not bad at all, just not my thing.

Chariel: Oh Train. Mixed feelings on them as a band in general. They had some fantastic songs in the late 90s and early 00s, like Meet Virginia and Drops of Jupiter, both which are songs I still totally listen to, but then like, their more modern stuff is all HAY SOUL SISTER and I am all WHAT NO WHY IS THIS A THING. Okay let’s see how this goes. ...IT STARTS OFF UPBEAT AND MAKES A JOHNNY DEPP REFERENCE, SO FAR SO TERRIBLE. Ugh this is cheesy and I also kind of hate the music. Also...did he just say I love Ecco Sandals on you? MERMAIDS CAN’T WEAR SANDALS. GROSS IS THIS NOT EVEN ABOUT A MERMAID HE’S JUST CALLING HIS GIRLFRIEND A MERMAID? T.ears. Ugh this is so not what I had in mind for this theme.

Andre:
Flight of the Conchords - Mermaid
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8qDNi2-Yg8

Murrmaid: People always try to troll us in this game. Why? But they're Kiwis, and Kiwis are just weird, so... eh. We need to think of a theme justifying someone sending in their David Bowie thing. I mean, yeah. You guys did so well with the murderer theme... what happened? This is fun, and I actually have a fondness for Flight of the Conchords. Eh.

Chariel: Lolllll they keep saying Mermaid and I keep hearing it as MURRMAID. ...would it be weird for you if I touched your fishy hole? ANDRE, PUSSY SONGS WERE TWO ROUNDS AGO. I was not expecting any joke songs this round, but this does have some pretty clever lyrics, like smoking sea weed, haha. This obviously doesn’t hold a candle to some of the good songs this round, but I will admit it’s kind of amusing me.

Kathy:
Sarah Khider - Mermaid Song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYPsFVkLE2k

Murrmaid: I've never heard this, or of her, for that matter. Something about the song structure and melody reminds me of a '60s pop song, but with this slightly jazzy arrangement. She has a great voice, but with the production I'm not sure she's really using it to her potential. Still, this good... and new to me. Well played.

Chariel: Okay so I’ll be honest, I kind of assumed I’d probably hate this because you sent this, and your taste is kind of the worst. But it actually has a nice eerie sound to it. Also, a girl singing. Is this about a lesbian romance between a woman and a mermaid? Plz I hope so. Btw, random interlude, I found this swimsuit that IS MERMAID STYLE. Like it’s a vintage style one piece, and the top part over your boobs is purple, and then the rest is like METALLIC GREEN AND LOOKS LIKE A MERMAID TAIL, IT IS SO COOL I AM GOING TO GET IT EVEN THOUGH I NEVER AM IN THE WATER rofl. Anyway, back to the song, I’m feeling this lesbian mermaid stuff. Surprisingly decent choice.

David:
This Mortal Coil - Song To The Siren
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFWKJ2FUiAQ

Murrmaid: This song again. Elizabeth Fraser has such a beautiful voice... no one sounds like her, no one could. Her voice also has an almost outer-body feeling to it. Unrelated to the song, but I always thought she was oddly beautiful in a very *piercing* way. "Touch me not, come back tomorrow..." The way she sings that line is mesmerizing for some reason. btw, no one ever sends the Cocteau Twins... for anything... ever. Why is that? I don't think I've even seen them in dream-pop themes. wtf? I'm trying to rush these comments so Cherry doesn't get mad, but... Another amazing version of an amazing song.

Chariel: This is a cover of the song Melanie sent, which is cool because I liked that song, and I like covers, so let’s see how this one goes. ...I don’t like it nearly as much. There is another cover that youtube is suggesting on the sidebar by Sinead O’Connor and I just clicked that and I like that so much better than this one, wish you had picked that. This isn’t like, terrible, but I don’t care for it much. I’m trying to figure out why. I think it’s just the way she’s singing, her voice is fine but I don’t like the dragged out way she’s singing. One of my many hangups is people who like, over-enunciate when they sing. Don’t worry though, Murr will love this and you will be totally safe, haha.

Tammy:
Luka Bloom - Sunny Sailor Boy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzxlhZ2m5P8

Murrmaid: This song got me hooked in the first 2 seconds. That opening progression is so beautiful. The chorus is beautiful. It's such a simple arrangement, but so powerful. I don't even mind that the guitar sounds like it's DI'd. "Like a man in a dream for an age it seemed, I stood as still as a stone / when the mermaids sand and the melody rang, like a melody calling me home". Yeah, I fcking love this. Let's hope he doesn't ruin it. "She captured my will with a song"... This is incredible. I'm bookmarking this.

Chariel: Lol this kinda sounds like a country song, only Irish. The lyrics are decent, it kind of sounds like an old folktale or something, which I like. I kind of hate the chorus though, which should surprise no one haha. OOH WAH is totally one of my hangups. Plus Sunny Sailor Boy sounds so cringeworthy, like come on mermaid, you can come up with something better to call him. I imagine mermaids are actually very good at nicknames. Anyway, despite the annoying chorus this is decent.

Nat1:
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Mermaids
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4CkPM0LJT4

Murrmaid: This and the next song are 2 songs I was thinking of for this round. But I'll get to the other. "She was a catch, we were a match / I was the match that would fire up her snatch". I mean, c'mon. What song starts out that perfectly? "I believe in God / I believe in mermaids, too / I believe in 72 virgins on a chain - why not, why not? / I believe in the rapture / For I've seen your face". Believe in everything, folks! Limiting belief just limits your mind. This is a message is sponsored by Tomcat Murr. Beautiful song... dark, plodding, but then it just erupts in this shimmering mess of, like, awesomeness and sht for the chorus. Great pick.

Chariel: You don’t mess around, bro. You already have the advantage of being able to submit two songs, and you still rushed to send this song so no one else could, haha. Andre tried to send this after you and was pretty much in t.ears when I told him it was taken. Anyway, song. I like the simplicity of it. The lyrics are nice too, except for the part where he mentions the rapture. Seriously, *beep* the rapture and all that. Anyway, I like the beginning, and how the song kind of changes a bit as it goes on, like it sounds like a basic rejection from a girl he wants to sleep with, but then it’s like BTW I ALSO BELIEVE IN MERMAIDS, AND THIS SONG IS ABOUT THEM, HI. The chorus is really beautiful too. I’m sure this song has deep religious undertones that I don’t feel like analyzing, to me it’s just mermaids and the beauty of the sea and whatever, which is beautiful, even though you know, I am also like, afraid of the ocean. I AM LITERALLY A WALKING PARADOX, GUYS.

Nat2: (HIGHER SCORE)
Jinja Safari - Mermaids
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCiHSA_LCRs

Murrmaid: So, no one here knows this band. However, I sent their song "Mombassa On the Line" in the last Natlanie Idol, and I don't think Mel would send this, so... hi, Nat. I love this song. "Arctic stars /
Locked by land / Please don't hold on to my hand / Oh lady of the sea, it's gone too far / I could never keep you alive in a jar / We were never meant to be, so I'll just keep quiet / But I'll still wear your scarf..." Arctic stars. This song actually reminds me on an old-ish now estranged friend, in a good way. In that fuzzy nostalgia way. Jinja Safari, imo, is one of the most underrated bands out there now. If anyone's curious, check out some of their live videos, especially "Peter Pan". Seriously incredible... I wish they'd tour the US, but alas, no one gives a fck about them. I love this.

Chariel: So I told you one of the songs you sent was one of the seven Murr mentioned on the thread, but actually, they both were, surprise haha. I haven’t heard of this band before, but I like their name. Oh they have a very cool ambient sound, I am liking this. “Mermaid. Arctic stars. Locked by land. Please don’t hold on to my hand” <3 (I threw that in there just for you, I haven’t done that for awhile, haha). I really like this (you know, aside from the UNNECESSARY OH OHS ) but for real, this is totally my thing and I liked it a lot. It’s a good song to end on, because now I can check out some other songs by them while I am putting the results together.

Re: Round Five Results!

You guyssssss I was trying to get eliminated

Oh it's like slang. From...England

THEME SIX, LIKE WOAH

From the primordial depths of the ocean, the mermaids rise to the surface, blah blah, something about the scales of their tails looking like sequins...

GLAM ROCK 4 MURR

This theme is glam rock, pure and simple. I've tried glam rock themes before, via other hosts while I was a judge, and the players always screws it up. So, here are some rules:

1. The song must have been released between 1971 and 1975. I realize this limits some earlier glam-era T. Rex songs, some later glam-era Cockney Rebel songs, etc... But to keep it simple, between those years.

2. Because I'm a control freak, you must choose from this list of bands/artists:

T. Rex
Lou Reed
Roxy Music
David Bowie
Jobriath
(Steve Harley and) Cockney Rebel
Iggy and The Stooges
Mott the Hoople
New York Dolls
Brett Smiley
Silverhead
Wizzard
Rita Lee & Tutti Frutti
Kim Fowley

You may send any song, by any of those artists, released between 1971 and 1975. I've probably overlooked something, but that's my fault. If your submission fits that criteria, it will be accepted.

Send songs to me, Tomcat Murr, by Saturday, June 4th at noon CCT.

We're not heathens, Turner!

Is Donna Summer okay?

The explanation she sent for that song was so sweet, though. Also, Panic! At the Disco. This is why I'm enforcing strict rules with dates and a list of artists, kids. It's for your own safety.
