My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 : John Stamos and Rita Wilson… what was the point?

John Stamos and Rita Wilson… what was the point?

I really enjoyed this movie for what it was, a sequel for those of us who loved the family from the first movie and enjoyed seeing what they are up to years later. No it's not academy award material but it was a fun movie nonetheless.

With that being said, I can't for the life of me figure out why John Stamos and Rita Wilson are in the movie? They add absolutely NOTHING to the story and aren't even believable as a couple especially parents to a 7 year old? Honestly that was the only part I didn't like it just came off as 2 celebs who wanted to be in the movie so they found a way to cram them in. and it was awkward.

Re: John Stamos and Rita Wilson… what was the point?

I just watched the movie and was wondering the same thing. I know Tom Banks produced it and his wife is Rita Wilson and maybe they just wanted an other famous Greek in there.

Re: John Stamos and Rita Wilson… what was the point?

* Hanks, not Banks. Spellcheck

Re: John Stamos and Rita Wilson… what was the point?

Banks, maybe not misspelled, maybe it was a coded reference to his fame?

Re: John Stamos and Rita Wilson… what was the point?

I would imagine that if Hanks was the producer then throwing in his bride for a minor part is saving a little cash. Especially if the profits were in question. As for Stamos - who knows? Maybe he owes Godfather Hanks a favor.

They should have saved a whole lot of cash and not had the characters in the story at all they added absolutely NOTHING to the movie.

Re: John Stamos and Rita Wilson… what was the point?

Yes they could have done without them. They only served as the vehicle to introduce the matchmaking attempt of getting their son to meet Paris as a potential husband. I suppose this was the way to do it.
As for Stamos I forgot he is the son of a Greek immigrant and the family name was originally Stamatopoulos. His character's last name in Full House was Jesse Katsopolis. So there's that.

Re: John Stamos and Rita Wilson… what was the point?

John Stamos's mom knew Nia Vardalos personally and had requested her, Vardalos to cast Stamos if she ever did a sequel.
His father also had a Greek restaurat like Nia's dad in the movie, so maybe this was the reason.
Stamos's mom passed earlier, before the release of this film.

Damn. That's sad.

Re: John Stamos and Rita Wilson… what was the point?

Ah- Rita Wilson produced it and John Stamos is a gorgeous Greek guy. Case closed

Re: John Stamos and Rita Wilson… what was the point?

I agree their characters could have had a better storyline

Re: John Stamos and Rita Wilson… what was the point?

From what I heard from an interview with Nia, Tom and Rita saw Nia in Canada doing her big fat greek theater show, and they're the one's who got the first movie made. Plus Hank produced this one I saw in the credits, so they are heavily involved. They just probably wanted to make a cameo appearance. They only had 2 short scenes. Whats the big deal, It's Stamos and Rita, 2 big time actors.

Big time actors? Wow, playing really foot loose and fancy free with that term. I don't consider either of them "big time", although Rita's husband certainly is.

Anyway, it's a discussion board so I'm discussing my annoyance at seeing these two in the movie for NO PURPOSE other than to tack on an acting credit. They contributed nothing and they weren't even believable as a couple. Really strikes me as egotistical Hollywood narcissism at its finest.

John Stamos is the handsomest Greek star in Hollywood,he should at least get big parts in Greek-related gigs!He only played a Greek-American in Full House and that's it!Aniston and Galifianakis take all the glorious fame!

So you're saying that roles should be given based on a scale of how good looking you are and if you are a really good looking actor of a particular nationality, you should automatically get roles in any movie where that nationality is featured. If no role exists, one should be made up to accommodate you because after all, you are soooo good looking.

Got it

Re: John Stamos and Rita Wilson… what was the point?

No,I'm saying that since john Stamos has a considerable reputation in Hollywood he should be used properly in a gig, forget about just looks,I'm talking about the whole package here,I think he's talented enough to pull off a part like the leading guy in a Greek-related gig!He should play a leading part in a movie like MBFGW but that's just my Greek pride talking! :)There are always parts for guys like John Stamos, many douchebag actors get parts they don't deserve, huge miscasts, you damn well know it!Stamos did a cameo here,he shouldn't do it at all,he should stick to his tv cameos. And again, that's just me talking! :)

Re: John Stamos and Rita Wilson… what was the point?

Having the same heritage and nationality, I'm sure they're all like extended family. It's a big, loud family movie so of course, you have the whole big, loud family in it. Besides you don't need a purpose when it's about family.

Re: John Stamos and Rita Wilson… what was the point?

John stamos is a draw for some people. He's doing pretty good recently with fuller house, that show that got cancelled, and scream queensso I think he was there to trick fans of him into watching the movie just to see he's barely there. I agree the characters were totally unneeded.
