Lion : what was the intention of the friendly woman who took him in…
Re: what was the intention of the friendly woman who took him in…
It certainly seemed so.
It made me nervous the way the man was touching the boy's face but maybe that was a cultural thing. I don't know.
I thought his running away showed his gumption and survival skills. He knew something was not right and was brave and smart enough to run away.

Based on the fact that his next (acting) role is a movie on sex trafficking, I would assume it is that.
Re: what was the intention of the friendly woman who took him in…
I've listen to an extensive interview with Saroo Brierly, who also wrote a biographical book. He says that even though he was very young, his survival depended upon using his instincts to avoid the sex traffickers and the teenage gangs. He mentioned that the couple gave him the creeps and he knew he had to get away from them. Ultimately he admits he was very fortunate because most children in his situation did not survive.
It's not what a movie is about, it's how it is about it.

that was pretty much what i wanted to know. he was sharp enough at that age to figure - something wasnt right - that its time to run. Despite the comfort he found himself in. I think many other kids his age wouldnt have done the same.
however he was precariously on the edge of being taken. Had that man decided to take him that minute and abuse him. Dangerous.

I also have a feeling the soda the woman offered him might have had a sedative of some kind, and again Saroo was smart enough not to drink it.
Re: what was the intention of the friendly woman who took him in…
no, i dont think she had sedative in there.
by this time - she already thought she well and truly has got the trust of this homeless child. all she needed to do was sit back and act normal, feed him, talk to him.
then her pay day would come via that man when he returned.

Yes she was going to sell him to some kind of pardophile ring :(
Re: what was the intention of the friendly woman who took him in…
She was clearly a sex trafficker. That man who came, got in bed with the kid, was a pervert and a half. One of the creepiest scenes in recent cinema. Something told the little kid that he was in danger, and he had the instinct to flee. Thank god!
If you have seen Slumdog Millionaire, you know what they do to innocent, helpless children, whom they will BLIND, so they can beg more money. It is a big bad world out there and Lion, like Slumdog really brought the point home.
BTW That little boy should have been nominated for an Oscar and wasn't. Now that's child abuse!

Definitely. These disgusting men come in from all over the world to these impoverished countries. Not just india but pakistan, philippines I believe, madagascar and other poor countries to abuse these kids. It's very common in the middle east too. Just google dancing boys afghanistan.

AhemCatholic priests?
Re: what was the intention of the friendly woman who took him in…
I was referring to the huge issue of illegal disgusting sex trafficking minors in foreign countries. What do catholic priests have to do with that? Just because you are trying to be politically correct does not make anything happening in those countries right.

Damn, Google's suggested description for the search keyword "dancing boys afghanistan" which you mentioned, terrified me. It's such a cruel cruel world. :-(
Your mind makes it real.
Re: what was the intention of the friendly woman who took him in…
I was wondering that too so I'm glad I found this. I was uncomfortable with the way that guy was getting in the bed with him and touching him but I didn't want to jump to conclusions being as this takes place in an entirely different culture. Especially, since earlier in the movie, the two brothers were touching each other a lot and my brother and I would have never held each other like that as kids. But when he ran away, it definitely showed that something was up.
Re: what was the intention of the friendly woman who took him in…
I think that one boy in the orphanage was also taken away for sexual abuse by someone who'd obviously paid the orphanage. Horrible for these little kids. That's why it was such bad luck for Saroo to end up in Calcutta. If he'd wound up in a smaller town or village, the people there would've known right away he didn't belong there and would've tried to help him.

Obviously they wanted him for something "underground", was it sexual, or what?
