The Young Pope : I prefer the first episodes

I prefer the first episodes

I think it started off strong and eventually reduced itself into pro-religious propaganda. It would have been much more interesting had it been a story about a vicious Pope who was always a few steps ahead of everyone and pretended to be religious when he wasn't. There have been plenty of Popes in history who were cruel and corrupt while playing themselves off as saints, so it would have been interesting to see how one would operate in a modern setting. It would have been awesome to see Lenny manipulate crowds while holding his cardinals on a tight leash.

Re: I prefer the first episodes

I agree, I was hoping for a more vicious pope as well.

Re: I prefer the first episodes

But least from a theological and more recent historical stand point the cardinals do see him as vicious. He has threatened to turn the Catholic Church on its head a number of times now.

Were you looking for an Inquisition kind of thing?

Re: I prefer the first episodes

I wasn't thinking of an Inquisition per say, more along the lines of Lenny preaching to the masses about goodness and importance of following God while in private he doesn't believe in God and views his papacy as a way of exploiting everyone. He could get rich just by being in this position, and go around visiting other countries where the people think he is wonderful.

I actually wanted to see him being responsible for arranging murders of priests who try to stand up to his rule, and the other priests fearing him. It would be amazing to see him as an unstoppable force who would be brought down when he gets too arrogant and careless.

Re: I prefer the first episodes

i was expecting that also but i was happy till first half but 2nd half of the show is disappointing esp last 3 episodes, there is no payoff of the setup it just becomes a safe show and ending is stupid and rushed, what a letdown

Re: I prefer the first episodes

I saw those last episodes. what a letdown.

Re: I prefer the first episodes

There's nothing "pro-religious" about this series. You think the real Vatican like how they are being portrayed?
The last two episodes, especially 5, were the best so far. The machination of the Pope is going like a steam train, same with Voiello's plan to bring him down. Very juicy stuff.

Sorry for my English.

Re: I prefer the first episodes

Did you even read my post? Episode 5 is still the beginning. Watch all the way until the final episode 10 and then tell me if it is not pro-religious.

Re: I prefer the first episodes

I totally disagree . YEs the last episodes are heartwarming , sweet , spiritual , emotional and totally magnificent . I dont understand why people want little cynical games, like that something tender and spiritual is a shame for their macho side .
The show aimed at much more than a Vatican "house of cards". It's a story about human people (with their faults) facing the mistery of spituality and/or God ( and the end of the story will please , i think , all points of view ).
The last 2 episodes are the best ones ive saw in 35 years of tv .
