OT: The Horror Thread

I figured I'd create a thread since I know there's a number of horror fans on this board. I'll be using the thread to post my thoughts on some movies I watch, but it would be nice to see what others have to say as well about whatever. Feel free to share movies you've seen, or talk about older movies as well. Or just hang out too. Whatever, all is welcomed.

Onto the movies. I spent the week binge-watching Netflix's horror selection since there were a lot of newer straight-to-video movies to see on there, especially ones with 'bigger name' actresses starring which seems to be a thing these days.

The Veil (2016) - Twenty-five years after members of a religious cult committed mass suicide, the lone survivor returns to the scene of the tragedy with a documentary crew in tow.

It stars Jessica Alba and Thomas Jane, and Jane was by far the best performer in this cast. He always annoys me when he's the hero of a story, but he made for a good villain in this one. It starts out like a basic slasher, but it's much more frustrating than that. The story could've made for a great psychological thriller, but they screwed it up big time. 4/10

Visions (2015) - After moving to a vineyard to start a new life with her husband, a pregnant woman begins to experience terrifying visions.

This one perhaps intrigued me the least of the line-up. Isla Fisher stars in what I expected to be yet another run-of-the-mill ghost story, but this one actually had an interesting twist and ended up getting mean-spirited mighty quick. Though you have to sit through a lot of clichéd material leading up to it, the finale made it worth it in the end. 7/10

The Diabolical (2015) - A single mother, and her children, are awoken nightly by an intense presence. She asks her scientist boyfriend to destroy the violent spirit, that paranormal experts are too frightened to take on.

I've always liked Ali Larter, who stars in this ghost story with an exceptionally-good SciFi spin. The script wasn't the best and I was left with numerous questions once it all wrapped up, but those monsters were straight out of Silent Hill and I actually dug this flick. 6/10

The Hollow (2015) - It's Halloween eve on Shelter Island, and the small town is preparing for a killer storm. But the dark clouds gathering over the island are bringing with them a curse one-hundred years in waiting. As the woods give birth to an ungodly and insatiable creature of fire, bones, and earth, three sisters must scramble to stay alive through the long dark night of the Hollow. For it's not something you can kill. It's only something you can try and survive.

I probably am going to be a bit too hard on this flick. When I started it, I was expecting a different movie called The Woods (2015) (alternatively titled The Hallow) which got decent reviews on The Horror Club. Instead, I watched this horrendous TV movie with terrible characters played by terrible actresses doing dumbass stuff. The only good quality of this film is that the monster was actually pretty well designed, but otherwise terrible film. 3/10

Tiger House (2015) - Kelly sneaks into her boyfriend's house but tonight, she's not the only unwelcome visitor. As the situation spirals out of control, the suburban house becomes a terrifying arena for violence.

This one treads a fine line between thriller and horror. It's got a kickass heroine, very much in the same line as Erin from You're Next or Justine from Kirsty. The movie wasn't perfect though and seemed to drag in spots, but it was a good watch. 7/10

Curve (2015) - A young woman becomes trapped in her car after a hitchhiker causes her to have an automobile accident.

I was pretty excited to see this one because Julianne Hough stars in it and I remember Teddy Sears from his soap days. Sadly, Julianne takes far too long to turn badass and Teddy wasn't nearly evil enough to really engage me at all. The story just really slows down to a boring halt in the middle and takes too long to go anywhere. Bottom line, don't pick up gorgeous hitchhikers on the side of the road... but wait everyone with half a brain should know that already. 5/10

Hellions (2015) - A teenager must survive a Halloween night from Hell when malevolent trick-or-treaters come knocking at her door.

Robert Patrick (the T-1000 from T2) is in it as a sherriff, but he's underutilized. I really, really wanted to like this one. It has a lot of that Halloween charm to it and what's scarier than a pack of children in creepy costumes trying to kill you, or steal your baby.... or something...? In truth, this movie confused the living hell out of me and made no sense at all. 3/10
That's it for now. I may post what I plan to watch tonight later. Anybody seen these ones, or anything else, good lately?

Seed of Chucky.

Because you're pissing your pants.

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

Don't watch SEED OF CHUCKY but definitely watch~

CURSE OF CHUCKY. It was pretty damn awesome. It was more like the first couple movies in the franchise.

Also, Babadook and Oculus. But I think you've seen those?

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

I can vouch for Curse of Chucky and Babadook! Loved that Curse of Chucky brought the series back to its roots! Babadook was super creepy even though the kid was possibly the most annoying child in the history of cinema.

I think I watched Oculus but it was like I just put it on and it was white noise to me in the background while I did something else because I barely remember it. That's the one about the mirror right?

Like that Russian babe, Anesthesia

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

yes it's the one about the mirror. And since you were getting jiggy with it you missed some good sh!t. You would like it cause it's one of those stories about a haunted thing (the mirror) that's been in a ton of old houses and a bunch of different people have used it. Like a checked out library book. Only it kills everyone lol.

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

I never got the hate for Seed of Chucky... Jennifer Tilly is always such a fun actress to watch (Liar Liar and Bound) are two of my favorite Tilly movies) and her role in 'Seed' was expanded since she got to parody herself quite a bit. It's just as fun as Bride of Chucky, imo.

Chucky got his slasher groove back in Curse of Chucky though... it was nice to see that one prioritizing horror over comedy after two decent comedies in the franchise. I like the Bride/Seed/Curse trilogy better than the Child's Play trilogy, honestly.

edit: I liked The Babadook but Oculus was kind of lame. I didn't dig it much at all and I found it overlong and boring with a rather clunky premise. The Babadook got a 7/10 and Oculus got a generous 5/10.

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

i saw The Witch recently

I loved it, it is really slow burn and really suspenseful and your not quite sure what exactly is happening, I loved that it was set in a really different time with the original language which can be hard to decipher sometimes when they talk fast.

and I don't want to give anything away but literally the creepiest scariest voice in cinema for me, it still gets me nervous thinking about it.

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

I love this! Have been looking for good horror movies I havent seen yet

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

Thanks for sharing, Will. I too am excited to see this one. I love period-piece horrors and I've been hearing good things about it. My coworker (a minister's wife who actually loves horror movies ) actually asked me to go see it with her since she doesn't know anyone else who loves horror like we do. I'll have to let you know what I think.

And I'm glad you enjoyed Let Us Prey, Kevin. I've had my eyes on Pollyanna McIntosh ever since I saw her in it along with Exam (2009), which was a worthy thriller that has sadly been cut from Netflix. I plan to watch The Woman (2011) when I can find it. As for Let Us Prey, Liam Cunningham did a terrific job as well as the creepy stranger... and everything about this movie was badass and really jangled the nerves. I plan to buy it if it ever leaves Netflix.

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

The Woman was awesome.

Isn't there a new Horror Western? Skull claw? Something? I keep hearing about it everywhere. I guess it's along the lines of Green Inferno or, if you're older like me, Cannibal Holocaust. Those are disgusting but I like Western settings!

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

I love western horror! Such an underrated subgenre of horror. I just bought one yesterday along with Intruders called Kill or Be Killed (2015) that I plan to watch sometime this week. It almost seems like a slasher flick set in the wild west which may be mighty fun despite of its low IMDb rating.

Could you be talking about Bone Tomahawk (2015)? That one had cannibals as well as a stellar cast.

I think A_Supreme is #Dantastic ~ Alaina

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

Yessss. Bone Tomahawk. Thank you, Dan!!

I am putting Kill or Be Killed on my list as we speak. My friend keeps raving about it. I figured it wasn't out yet!

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

Seed of Chucky just got too far away from what made the Child's Play series great. Personally I'm not a huge fan of the series after the second (I mean those two are SO much better than the rest), but the third and Bride are still fun to watch. I haven't seen Curse of Chucky yet.

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

omg the second Chucky randomly has Grace Zabriski from Twin Peaks and Inland Empire I didn't know that was her. She's either the mother or the teacher I can't remember. I can't wait to go back and rewatch it now. She's such a goddess and her acting is fantastic. She's COMPLETELY psycho.

Leland, DON'T ruin THIS TOO! *watches in horror as Leland falls into Lauta's grave*

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

Dan I saw PaHR. It was very much unique and beautifully shot. I was surprised I didn't doze off. It's hard to really talk about it because it's so unique. I don't really remember though cause I saw it quite a long time ago. IMDb says I gave it an 8/10. Unsettling is a good word to describe it.

Yassss. You're Next and Kristy <333 I need to watch that movie if it has a bitch like Erin or Justine.

Also, Curse of Chucky and Babadook were very good but I kinda hated Oculus. The ending was so obvious to me and I really wanted something else to happen because I saw it coming a mile away.

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

I'm with you, G. I knew that one of the main characters were going to be killed in the fashion that they were at the end, though it was an ironic and inspired move for them to off the leading lady (who was so prepared to beat the mirror) rather than the brother whom I expected the trap to kill instead. I kind of appreciated that it took a downer's route for the end which almost never happens anymore in modern horror, but it probably would've played better if they had written the brother character better. I found him annoying.

Overall, this was a frustrating experience because that 1hr+44mins runtime dragged on to a rather disappointing conclusion. I even remembered that run time on the top of my head because of how long the movie seemed to feel as I watched it. This was one of the few that have ever really bored me. I seem to be in the minority, though. A lot of people seem to praise it but I didn't find it to be a satisfying watch at all sadly.

I think A_Supreme is #Dantastic ~ Alaina

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

Oh I knew it'd end that way because it's just like the beginning with the brother being taken away by the authorities because of the mirror's dirty tricks. So, I knew the sister was *beep* It was sad because she was the superior character by far. The movie definitely had good moments though but it didn't really pay off for me.

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

I completely agree with the pair of you.

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

Shut In (2015) (aka Intruders) - Anna suffers from agoraphobia so crippling that when a trio of criminals break into her house, she cannot bring herself to flee. But what the intruders don't realize is that agoraphobia is not her only psychosis...

I've been waiting for this one to come out for a while now. It's not on Netflix or anything, but I saw it at the store today and decided to buy it blindly just because my desire to see it was that great. I'm really glad I did, though... it was very well-acted and was deliciously mean-spirited. Never break into someone's house... you're in for a world of hurt if that person's not quite right in the head. A worthy 8/10 for subverting usual expectations.

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) - During a rural picnic, a few students and a teacher from an Australian girls' school vanish without a trace. Their absence frustrates and haunts the people left behind.

This is almost told like a biopic, but I believe I read that the story is entirely fictional and based on a book? I can't remember for sure, I've only just finished this. The title/synopsis caught my attention a couple of weeks ago on the Horror board when we were talking about ghosts and hauntings. Hanging Rock came up and someone mentioned this movie, so I rented it out from Netflix.

Now that I've finished the movie, I'm left torn. Very torn, in fact.

On the positive side, it's definitely a beautiful film with terrific acting, and it was just gorgeous to look at from start to finish. You really cannot go wrong with these 70's films... so few films are made like this anymore. Storywise, it's more of a drama with a compelling mystery. It's not really a horror film by any stretch, nor was I expecting one when I rented it. I just always have an incredibly hard time hating on a movie that's beautifully shot with amazing acting, even if it's storyline isn't all that great.

On the downside, this movie was so visually stimulating that I fell asleep midway thru. I don't want to insult the movie by calling it boring, I just found it relaxing and it got too hard to keep my eyes open. It has that 70s pacing that wouldn't go today. I would've loved more explanation on what exactly transpired at Hanging Rock, but I guess the movie is more about the fallout of these disappearances as opposed to the mystery of the disappearances itself. You're bound to be disappointed if you go into this one expecting some master ghost story, though some supernatural elements are implied rather heavily.

Luckily I started the film with no real expectations, but damned if it didn't have all the potential in the world. I think I'll give this a 6/10. I always try to reserve these types of artsy movies for lazy Sunday watches and this one fit the bill perfectly. I wouldn't watch it again and I may research a bit on this film to see if I can acquire more appreciation for it that explains it's 7.6/10 IMDb rating. I probably missed its deeper meanings.

Has anyone else seen this? What did you think?

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

Nightmare Beach (1989) (aka Welcome to Spring Break) - Diablo is a biker gang leader executed for the murder of a young woman. A year after his death, it's time for Spring Break. Football players Skip and Ronnie head to the beach, where Skip meets Gail, the sister of the woman who was murdered a year ago. All the fun and glory of Spring Break, however, is about to turn into a living nightmare when a mysterious person in a biker outfit begins to kill people by electrocution. Could it be that Diablo has returned from the dead?

This movie was surprisingly fairly enjoyable, albeit in a rather trashy way. The characters in it reminded me of the ones in another 80's slasher Graduation Day. You can't take them seriously at all, yet since it's a slasher, it's all good. Sarah Buxton played one of my favorite daytime psychos on B&B so it was odd seeing her in an ingénue good-girl role for once, and John Saxon played against type and was a bad, baaaad sheriff in this one. The killer could've been better, though he does have an amusing M.O. I can appreciate a slasher that knows its place and simply has fun with the established formula without screwing with it too much. 5/10, same score that Graduation Day got from me.

The Harvest (2013) - A couple who keeps their sick son in a secluded environment find their controlled lives challenged by a young girl who moves in next door.

I was completely blown away by this one. I had been wanting to see it for a while but I kept putting it off because I was worried about it being a gorefest (the words "harvest" in a horror title conjures up the image of ickfests like Turistas - ew!), but this movie only manages to thread that line slightly. At first, the entire vibe seems ripped straight out of a Lifetime movie which may turn off most horror fans. But have no fear, things eventually do turn sinister and ugly slowly and surely. Solid acting performances from all the leading cast. The true stars in this one are psycho-mom Samantha Morton and morally-conflicted Michael Shannon, and the kids both actually do a decent job as well. Easily 8/10 from me.

It's on Netflix so you guys should try watching and see what you think. If you like it its approach, I also recommend Neverlake (2013) as well.

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

Is anybody else looking forward to the remake of Stephen King's IT?

#VivaLaBull - "Go away. You aren't even American"

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

I have a natural aversion to remakes, but the second half of IT wasn't all that great so maybe the remake treatment could do it wonders but I'm apprehensive at best.

I think A_Supreme is #Dantastic ~ Alaina

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

Lol exactly my feelings on it. I love IT for the nostalgia of being a kid and terrified of it, then seeing it later as an adult and being less scared haha. Tthe first part was great, it's the second that was a let down and could be much improved. I don't like remakes if the original is considered a classic. What's the point in remaking something that doesn't need improved? As for IT, it could certainly be improved so I'm excited to see it although I saw it's goigg to be an R rating. Why? I would have expected it to be only suitable for over 18s.

#VivaLaBull - "Go away. You aren't even American"

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

Yeah, not all remakes are bad. The ones that are successful are the ones that improve on movies that were fairly weak, storywise, to begin with... the two that always come to mind are I Spit On Your Grave and The Last House on the Left. I like both remakes more than their originals.

I have a feeling though that this IT remake won't be well-received much in the same way The Nightmare on Elm Street remake wasn't because no matter how well a remake of this nature tries, some fans are far too deadest on certain actors playing iconic characters**... for instance, Tim Curry to Pennywise is like Robert Englund to Freddy. Despite Jackie Earle Haley doing a serviceable job in the NMOES remake, people still hated on it just because Robert Englund wasn't Freddy. I think the same will be true here.

**I still think that this is the primary reason people look for reasons to hate on Hellraiser: Revelations - Doug Bradley isn't Pinhead and that is that. Make no mistake, the actor who did play Pinhead was indeed terrible. However, storywise, one has to admit that it's leagues above many of the previous crappy sequels in this franchise.

I think A_Supreme is #Dantastic ~ Alaina

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

Yeah, some horror villains are just so iconic, it doesn;t matter who plays them in a remake, it's just not the same lol. I am interested to see what the new Pennywise will be like though. I was terrified of the Tim Curry version as a kid. That voice <3, but I read he hated playing that character for the amount of time he had to spend in costume every day. Extremely uncomfortable. You never know, whoever plays it might be brilliant, like Heath Ledger as The Joker. You have to go into it with an open mind but it's inevitable you will compare remakes to originals. The biggest mistake they could make would be to not change the story at all, and it be predictable, to be basically an identical story to the original. I know even the original is a little different to the book but take TWD for example. It changes elements of the tv show fromt he comics to keep viewers guessing. If it was just living out the comics exactly, it'd be terrible so IT needs to change a few things up, maybe a few new characters or a different spin on things in some way.

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

It sounds like what you described is what caused the downfall of the Poltergeist remake, which I have absolutely no desire to see. :\

I think A_Supreme is #Dantastic ~ Alaina

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

The original 80s Poltergeist has been on my to watch watch list for about 10 years lmao. Is it worth it?

#VivaLaBull - "Go away. You aren't even American"

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

The original Poltergeist is a classic in the genre... aka must-see. It's not really scary per se, at least not to a grown adult. However, it brings haunting to suburbia rather than an old, rickety house as had been the norm up to that point.

The sequels weren't all that great, though. The second one has a creepy villain that makes it worth watching along with most of the original cast back, but the third one probably shouldn't have been made.

I think A_Supreme is #Dantastic ~ Alaina

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

Cool, I will make it a priority to check it out in the near future

#VivaLaBull - "Go away. You aren't even American"

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

Technically the new It won't be a remake, but a new adaption of the book. The original TV movie has a great performance by Tim Curry, and some scary scenes during the first half, but the book is SO much better, and it really deserves a great movie.

Now we're talking good horror movies.

You're talking about Them, and High Tension respectively, Ang.

Both movies were 8/10's imo. The scene in High Tension where the creepy bloated dude is searching around for Marie, with his loud ass breathing and squishy boots <3 nothing has ever been that suspenseful for me!

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

Them <3 Such a good movie. I give The Strangers the edge for me but they're both fantastic

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

Ranking French Horror:

5. Martyrs (2008) -- Solid start, falls off the wagon in the backhalf, highly overrated. Not a pleasant watch. I hear that the American remake is even worse, though.

4. Haute tension (2003) (aka High Tension) -- I have to rewatch this one with appropriate subtitles because the dubbed version is awful. It's a stellar slasher until a tacked-on twist screws it all up.

3. Ils (2006) (aka Them) -- Very different from other French horrors, relies far more on suspense/creepiness than outright gore which makes it unique. Unfortunately, once I found out that it was children and nothing supernatural, I was sorely disappointed. The film was pretty disturbing when you had no idea who *they* were, though.

2. Frontière(s) (2007) -- Stellar TCM homage, great action/gore, somewhat forgettable victims, but no one really cares so long as it's got a good final girl right? It's got a very good Hostel vibe to it in that the hero (heroine, in this case) pays back the villains one by one, and in rather nasty ways.

1. À l'intérieur (2007) (aka Inside) -- No doubt my favorite of the French wave... lots of stabbing, bloodiness, and claustrophobia to be found in this one. It's even a Christmas movie, too. A pair of scissors will never look the same ever again after watching this one.

I think A_Supreme is #Dantastic ~ Alaina

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

Inside <3. Fantastic film. The French really were making some great horror movies for a while. I haven't checked recently if they were still making a bunch of them (I don't watch as much horror as I used to), but the only real dud I can think of is Vinyan.

Re: OT: The Horror Thread

Oh man. Inside was definitely fantastic and that twist, wow. But I cannot watch it ever again. Just way too much cutting and stabbing for me. I remember it very vividly so I don't need to see it again.

Frotiere(s) <3 so underrated.

Martyrs </3 so OVERRATED. The last act I felt tried way too hard to bring something out of left field. I can't believe so many people praise it.
