Barbara Stanwyck receiving her Honorary Oscar in 1982

Worth a look for those who love Stanwyck. I'm sure most of us believe that she should have won an Oscar in her long and brilliant career!

Re: Barbara Stanwyck receiving her Honorary Oscar in 1982

never understood no academy awards bestowed on her. she was a very talented actress and had a phenomenal career. luv her pre code films.

Re: Barbara Stanwyck receiving her Honorary Oscar in 1982

Me, too.

Re: Barbara Stanwyck receiving her Honorary Oscar in 1982

Her pre-code films are still pretty awesome even today.

Re: Barbara Stanwyck receiving her Honorary Oscar in 1982

Absolutely!

Re: Barbara Stanwyck receiving her Honorary Oscar in 1982

Sorry, what single performance should Barbara won an Oscar for?

Re: Barbara Stanwyck receiving her Honorary Oscar in 1982

Out of her four nominations, I would choose Double Indemnity.

I don't think I've seen that movie yet. Classic movies tend to be low budget, boring and not written well or acted that well.

But I'll try.

Re: Barbara Stanwyck receiving her Honorary Oscar in 1982

I would have selected Double Indemnity, The Lady Eve, Ball of Fire, Christmas in Connecticut, Remember the Night, Sorry Wrong Number, Stella Dallas. So far, my favorite actress from the period of the early 30s to the mid 40s.

Re: Barbara Stanwyck receiving her Honorary Oscar in 1982

I love all of those, too, especially DOUBLE INDEMNITY, THE LADY EVE, REMEMBER THE NIGHT, and CHRISTMAS IN CONNECTICUT.

But I have to add this one, which is one of my all time favorites: Frank Capra's MEET JOHN DOE. If you haven't seen that one, you really must.

Stanwyck was so gifted, able to do drama and comedy equally well, and she was way ahead of her time in terms of her naturalism. One of the giants in film acting, without question. And what a long career she had!

Re: Barbara Stanwyck receiving her Honorary Oscar in 1982

You are right. I just finished watching Meet John Doe, a film I had never heard of and after watching it I have to wonder why it's not more widely known. A fantastic film that starts out quietly and goes in directions I didn't expect. Some incredible production, beautiful direction and powerful performances, led by Stanwyck and Cooper. Cooper is an actor I haven't much seen so far but I can't say I am a fan. In this film, he gets better and better, culminating in the unforgettable ending. Ironically enough, he would win an Oscar this year. But for Sergeant York, a film I haven't yet seen but might be watching soon. Stanwyck is superb, as always. She could do it all.

After watching it, I wondered why it's not available on quality blu ray. Well, that apparently will be resolved if this Youtube video is proof:

Supposed to be available in the fall on 4k and blu ray and one I intend to buy.

Meet John Doe

Oh, I'm thrilled that you watched and loved it! It's one of my all-time favorite films, period, with absolutely great work by all the cast, especially Stanwyck and Cooper. And I think it's one of Frank Capra's best. Like you, I've always felt it's been overlooked for some reason. If it does get restored, maybe people will start to take more notice. I hope so. It has so much to say about the world at that perilous time and our humanity in general. People need to see it. I'm so glad you did. And while I have a DVD of it that I recorded off of tv back in the days before digital, so it looks great, I would love to have a restored blue-ray copy. Hope one will come soon!!

And for the record, I think it should have been nominated for Oscars in all the major categories. But at least it received one for best original story, though why Robert Riskin didn't receive one for best screenplay is beyond me. Anyway, you've made my day. So glad you found and love this treasure.

Meet John Doe

Yes! I was surprised it didn't garner more Oscar attention. I did notice Barbara Stanwyck was nominated for Ball of Fire, also with Gary Cooper. Another terrific film but quite a departure from Meet John Doe.

Joan Fontaine ended up winning Best Actress for Suspicion. A fine film and performance. But, if you ask me, I would say Stanwcyk was better in Meet John Doe. I haven't seen the other performances, though I'd like to see Little Foxes (with Bette Davis) and Hold Back the Dawn (with Olivia de Havilland).

I also noticed they nominated ten pictures for Outstanding Motion Picture and it included Citizen Kane and The Maltese Falcon, two films I love. Amazingly, neither won the big Oscar. The film How Green Was My Valley did, so I'll add that to my list of films to watch.

Meet John Doe becomes the third Stanwyck film I would consider a Christmas time 'classic', joining Remember the Night and Christmas in Connecticut.

Anyways, thanks for the recommendation!

Meet John Doe

You are so welcome!!

Oh, and I have to say that HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY is another of my all-time favorites. Hope you enjoy that one, too. (Though I do think CITIZEN KANE and Orson Welles should have won the Oscars that year. 😊)

Re: Barbara Stanwyck receiving her Honorary Oscar in 1982

I don't like Barbara Stanwyck very much. I don't find her particularly attractive. In roles where she is expected to be viewed as very attractive it just doesn't work for me.

I tend to avoid watching her movies, although I have watched several of the better ones: Meet John Doe, Double Indemnity, …

Re: Barbara Stanwyck receiving her Honorary Oscar in 1982

Have to say I'm surprised at this, PL. But as the saying goes, to each his own. At least you have watched some of the best of her films. 😊
