Automobiles and Transportation : Poll: Automatic or manual transmission?

Automatic or manual transmission?

Which do you prefer driving

automatic

Manual stick shift

Personally think manual is a lot more fun. Just not in heavy, Boston- or LA-style traffic. It’s also better for the car, so I hear.

Automatic is obviously more convenient. You can text and drive, eat cheetos, and other very stupid things characteristic of the type of people who frequent this website.

One time he was asking us to give him our social security numbers. That's highly suspicious because he could use that for identity theft.

Yes, great point. Your SSN can be used for ID theft.

Brilliant post.

Re: Automatic or manual transmission?

where i live i'd get clutch foot if i drove stick. i do love the feel of it. but there is the cheetos thing about automatics.

Re: Automatic or manual transmission?

I can drive both equally well, but my preference would be for an automatic. But I’m amazed at the number of people (sometimes even older people) that cannot operate a clutch. Then again, there are some people that cannot walk and chew gum at the same time

My parents bought my brother and I, a Yamaha dirt bike when I was about 14, and it had a clutch. So I knew how to drive a clutch well before I ever drove a car.

The fuck do you do you do with your time? Pursuing frtt 24/7 is clearly pointless because you should have gotten laid by now. I know I could. Jesus kid.

Re: Automatic or manual transmission?

I can drive both. My current vehicle gives me the option to switch between both, but I keep it in automatic mode.

Depending on the vehicle and the terrain, there are so many vehicles where driving a stick makes much more sense. Driving a Jeep, for example, you would not want an automatic. Jeeps are for off-road driving, and you want the control and power of being able to shift.

Wow Lilith. I'm impressed with your off-road knowledge. My Grand Cherokee is automatic though. They did build some in the '90s with stick shifts. Very rare.

Re: Automatic or manual transmission?

I mostly drove Jeeps up until about 10 years ago. Back in the day, I drove CJ5s which had a high rollover rate because of the short wheelbase, especially since we did a lot of off-roading, pioneering, mud bogs and hill climbs. I live in, and travel to, very mountainous and rocky terrain. Driving on narrow dirt paths where there are steep cliff drops can be dangerous. That's why roll cages are important.

I then started buying CJ8s which were safer as the balance was better. They're not built for cornering like they're on rails like a sports car, but they're like driving tanks. I've also owned two Mustangs (which I HATED, by the way, loathe, simply hate those cars!). Give me a Jeep any day! ❤️

Re: Automatic or manual transmission?

Guuuurl,
CJ's were very well respected back in high school. Of course most people wanted to go big with Ford broncos and K5 blazers. I myself, had a full size Bronco.

Eventually I got a 3-inch lift with 33x14-in Mickey Thompsons.

But CJ's were known for their off-road prowess and ability. It sounds like you've gone over so many different terrains and that's so cool.

You actually used the vehicle for real and not just for posing.

Re: Automatic or manual transmission?

It also seemed like most of the people I dated also drove Jeeps, so I was in good hands. I learned to work on mine, to some degree. There's this wonderful brotherhood/sisterhood when you were driving on the roads. Jeep folks really do stick together.

I also dated someone who owned a Willy, and I think that's how it started. Then the next two guys I dated owned Jeeps and motorcycles, and I was very fortunate to have people around me to share in the fun and help me learn to explore and be self-sufficient with both.

Manuals are so much easier to drive, and I like knowing I have power at my fingertips if I need to downshift to grab that power, I have that option. There's so much more control when driving a manual.

/so I was in good hands. / *Giggity*

/learned to work on mine, to some degree. /

Yes. That's why I hold on to my 2004. It's the very last year of that model with the best engine before things got more complicated.

Parts are cheap. I even fixed a wiring issue a couple years back just by getting on the Jeep forums and learning how.

What would have cost me hundreds only cost me $5 for electrical tape and wire nuts. I MacGyver'ed that sht.)

I'm actually going to install some LED headlight housings sometime soon. I know how to wire them. I put in the previous ones but they are messing up.

I could also install HID headlights if I install a relay but probably won't at this time.

/also dated someone who owned a Willy, /

Back in my senior year in high school a friend of mine had a 1942 Willys Jeep that he brought to school.

That thing was very interesting and small by comparison to modern day Jeeps. He had the windshield folded down and of course there's no roll cage. We drove it around the school during lunch time and went up into the grass all the way near the school doors all over the place ruining the fresh lawn. 😆

I'm surprised security didn't catch us.

I love manuals too but I've never actually used them in a truck or 4x4. Only in a car. I think the key is having a good clutch if you're going to do a lot of shifting. My previous BMW clutch was awful

Re: Automatic or manual transmission?

Ever own a wrangler?

Cheerio.

Re: Automatic or manual transmission?

Yes.

My first two Jeeps also had manual lock hubs. Fun times, lol

Re: Automatic or manual transmission?

Nice. I want to buy one. Preferably manual.

They’re expensive as hell but great resale value.

Re: Automatic or manual transmission?

/manual lock hubs/ lol.
I never had to experience that.

My first 4x4 was a 1989 Big Bronco. It actually had push button four wheel drive!
Pretty advanced for the time.

I have select-trac on my current Jeep.

Re: Automatic or manual transmission?

Yes. 09 Wrangler. Despite being a V6 it got poor gas mileage. Only 250 on a full tank. I bought it in November and didn't keep it long enough to take the top off in the spring and summer.

Re: Automatic or manual transmission?

Due to the bad gas mileage?

My friend’s a mechanic and he says they’re cool but bad cars. So, idk. I’ve heard that from other people, they’re in the a shop a lot.

Also heard they’re easy to fix on your own if you’re into that. I’m not although I’d be down to learn if I had one.

Cheerio.

Re: Automatic or manual transmission?

Yes. My V8's got better gas mileage. Plus it was very clunky driving feeling despite being brand new. We drove to NYC and had to fill up 4 times compared to twice on previous trip.

Did the wave thing to other Jeep drivers on the first day of ownership.

Re: Automatic or manual transmission?

If you want an old Jeep get something with the Inline six 4.0 liter.

It's an AMC engine design used up until the mid 2000s. Not the best for fuel economy but they are known to go well over 500,000+ miles.

One of the best American engines ever made..

..Even outlasting many Toyotas.<—-Yep I just said that. Look it up. My 2004 WJ has one.

Re: Automatic or manual transmission?

Noted altho I’m looking at newer used Jeeps now

Cheerio.

Re: Automatic or manual transmission?

Not sure what your intended use is there, Vlad. But whenever you talk to the hardcore Jeep enthusiasts, they will tell you that the old CJ’s are the best. The Wrangler’s apparently leave a lot to be desired. Of course the old CJ’s hold their value pretty well, so they don’t come cheap. There is no automatic transmission, nor V8 options, with the exception of the last few years that they were produced.

Fit it with a CB or GMRS radio, so that you can talk to other Jeeps when off-roading.

I have an 86 Cherokee Chief. The last year that Jeeps were made by AMC. Don’t get one of those, whatever you do. I gotta say though, those old Jeep trucks look pretty cool. Though I can’t really comment on them.

Re: Automatic or manual transmission?

Automatic. I had a BMW 3 series for a year and a half that was stick shift. I liked the car but that clutch was ridiculous. Very stiff.

I drove my friends Honda Civic stick shift and the clutch was 100 times better.

I think if I get a second car I wouldn't mind a stick shift. Like an old mustang or something for fun. But not as my primary car.

You just can't get this sound with an automatic.

I have an Expedition and a motorcycle. I was saying if I drove a car, such as a Mustang, instead of an SUV, I'd pick a stick over an automatic.

Re: Automatic or manual transmission?

Have you ever gotten in an accident on the bike?

Cheerio.

Re: Automatic or manual transmission?

Only on dirt bikes doing off-roading. I'm not as wild on a bike as I used to be.

I prefer to cruise country roads, travel to small towns that are an hour or two away, have lunch at some local diner or visit some point of interest, the cruise back a different way.

Re: Automatic or manual transmission?

Ahhh I gotta get one some day. Right now tho I need a “main vehicle” with some transportation capacity

Cheerio.

Re: Automatic or manual transmission?

Jeeps are fun, but if I lived in the urbs, I wouldn't get one. They need to be free in the wild, sans top and doors

Re: Automatic or manual transmission?

I had such a hard time with dirt bikes. Mostly because they're so dang high. I still had fun, but prefer my street bike.

By the way, that sounds like a delightful way to spend an afternoon.

A group of six of us would get together on the weekends and just take on these long and windy roads.
