Captain America: Civil War : Why Chris Evans Is an Awesome Actor (and an Awesome Captain America)

Evans really came off as a jerk as Johnny Blaze/The Human Torch in the Fantastic Four movies, which the character is kind of supposed to be.

Evans also perfectly embodies the upstanding character and virtue of Captain America, who could have come off as cornball and syrupy in a lesser actors hands.

And Evans is the epitome of cool stoicism and determined resolve in Snowpiercer, which is not a movie I find the least bit interesting at all, except for the presence of Evans and, to a lesser degree, Ed Harris.

Evans can even pull off romantic comedy, which I strongly think he should avoid in the future. He should concentrate on action thrillers, adventure films, science fiction, dramas, and maybe broad comedies.

Definitely. As much as people love to rave about RDJ being the perfect Tony Stark (not saying they're wrong), deadpan snarker characters are a dime a dozen (yes, yes, I know that's not *all* Tony is). It takes a really special performance to pull off a 100% earnest Captain Americato even be acceptable to audiences, let alone be a genuinely likable and multilayered characterand Chris Evans just nails it.

I dont' think most people fully appreciates this quality of Captain America. You would think him just a simple Lawful-Good goodie-2-shoes but he's really not. I mean he goes against the UN of all things, breaks the law to save his friend. Nepotism before the LAW. And yet it's hard to argue that he's doing the WRONG thing.

I didn't think he'd work as Cap initially because of his Torch days (he was great in that character) but he's completely nailed Cap as a hero and a role model. He's the "corny" kind of superhero characters like Superman should always be.

I love him in Sunshine. He's consistently been doing such a good job, its a wonder he hasn't been recognized as a AAA star up til now.

Hell, he even made that giant ad Cellular seem semi-decent, and thats one hell of an achievement in itself.

Johnny Storm is suppose to be a lovable rascal just like Tony Stark. It's just that Marvel knows how to employee good writers unlike Fox in those days.

I am consistently surprised by the nuance he brings to the performance. In TWS when he is talking to Peggy and she suddenly has a lapse and acts like he just showed up, the mix of emotions playing on his face is amazing.

yep he's definitely come a long way.

There is a film from way back in 2005 he did with Jessica Biel & Jason Statham called London. I thought it was really good and showed off Evans' acting chops. And while I really enjoy him as Cap , I would like to see him in other stuff too. Snowpiercer, Sunshine & Puncture are also notable roles he's done too

Much like Cap in the comics, he's the heart of these films. He's the reason they ultimately work.

And he truly does care and gives 110% just like the Captain.

His work with Children's Hospitals alone is enough to make a grown man weep.

LOL. I remember the fan outrage when they heard Chris Evans was going to be Captain America

I honestly do not see it. But then I don't think CA is the right vehicle for one to display one's acting abilities. It's an action flick - not much acting ability is really needed. Chris does a decent job pulling it off. But I don't think the role is much of a stretch really.

Sure it's an action movie and hardly The Godfather, but Cap's earnest, fish-out-of-water demeanor is arguably not an easy role to pull off.

And given that like RDJ he has to go through a gamut of emotions and interactions - his chemistry with Bucky, a quietly confident leader, a conflicted man-out-of-time, a symbol of American values - surely not just anyone would be able to pull it off successfully.

Maybe Evans was just born for this role, but I do believe it takes a certain gravitas to pull it off, and for that he deserves some kudos at least.

I was skeptical that Captain America could be pulled off at all in this day and age, let alone by Chris Evans. I happily admit my dumbassery.

He's funny as hell as Jensen in The Losers. Quite a contrast to Cap and Snowpiercer.

I pray Marvel offers Chris a juicy new contract with creative control in the future. Maybe another 6 pictures with producer credits and an option to direct Netflix material?

Hopefully it's not like NCIS after Tony leaves.

evans and rdj and samuel l jackson have done excellent jobs also the actor who played loki tom hiddleston. they have added alot of dimension to their characters. most the others they arent really doing bad either but the demands of their roles pretty much paint by numbers imo.

ok i am hi-jacking this thread now but next time you pop-in the avengers dvd watch the first scene fury and loki encounter each other watch how these two great actors play off each other especially jackson's tone and expressional facial language.

Everyone they have cast in leads have been great. A few of the bad guys have been cast kind of "meh" (EX: Mickey Rourke) but who cares?

I 100% agree. I didn't think he would be able to pull if off after Johnny Storm. But he did it beautifully. Just shows his wide range as a actor.

I agree. Evans has the same earnest quality Christopher Reeve had as Superman.

He's great. He just needs to keep his yap shut when it comes to his ignorant politics. No need to turn off half the country for no reason whatsoever.
