I use HARD MODE which I believe forces the best strategy. If I had any hits with ADIEU it would not allow me to follow with STORY. The letter Y is good at the end but rare elsewhere:

INSTEAD of making one wait until NEXT midnight to play AGAIN…I WISH they'd ALLOW both midnight and noon. TWICE a day INSTEAD of just ONCE a day.

I wish it was the same time worldwide, not midnight for each timezone. Since it went to NYT I've been expecting 10:00pm EST when all their other puzzles come out. That would be confusing also since the puzzles come out at 6:00pm on Saturday and Sunday.

ACTUALLY, it IS the SAME time for everyone! It just HAPPENS to be MIDNIGHT for the Rockies while being 0200 for the East coast. I KNOW this because I used my VPN to try to play early. It was the PREVIOUS one with AVERT. I put in ADIEU and noticed that it started with A and E was NOT in the 4th spot. So I typed in AVERT and that was it! It "said" the next time will be in four-plus hours which is MIDNIGHT my time. Despite my VPN making them THINK I'm in The Netherlands.

Good! Then they've changed it! When Wordle first came out, seems it was local midnight. That pretty much eliminated international forums which do exist for NYT crosswords. I'm on the main one, but rarely post. The change probably happened when NYT took over. Still it seems strange that Wordle is four hours later than all their other puzzles. Midnight MST? That also seems strange since ours is sometimes called the forgotten timezone. That's because TV announcements often skip MST.
Where are your spoilers? The new puzzle comes out in 3:35!

I just went there WITHOUT the VPN and STILL have to wait just under three hours and fifty-five minutes. That's the SAME as the VPN minus the time since then.

I thought of INANE, but went with IMAGE first. It's percentages. Only 160/513 or 31.2% of answers have repeated letters.

Block Puppy POO 🐶🕷️ if you don't like his spoilers. I don't ever open this thread if I haven't done the puzzle. It can be too late because everyone east of my timezone gets the puzzle sooner. That's why I'm against Wordle coming out at local midnight which is inconsistent with all the other NYT puzzles.

Likely your second word was GNARL. I am amazed that the word has never appeared in a NYT crossword puzzle. That may be a clue that they use that database to select their words. ¡GNARLY!
