A Monster Calls : Hope it finds the audience it deserves

Hope it finds the audience it deserves

This film opened in India today and there was absolutely no marketing for it whatsoever and there were like 5 people in the auditorium. It's probably going to be on everyone's top 10 list of 2017 and it sure as hell deserves to be seen by a lot of people!

Re: Hope it finds the audience it deserves

It was alright but it wasn't that great, I felt it needed a more upbeat ending since the film was too heavy.

Re: Hope it finds the audience it deserves

Sounds like my kind of depressing movie.

Re: Hope it finds the audience it deserves

I think an upbeat ending would've ruined the entire point and messages of the movie, though. Plus, it ended exactly how the book did (although the movie actually tacked on the part with his new bedroom and the pictures that the Mum had drawn).

Re: Hope it finds the audience it deserves

Real life doesn't always have upbeat endings, especially not a story like this. In fact I loved the message of this film, it didn't try to tell kids that things will get better eventually but that it's going to be hard to get through it and that you'll never really get through it but eventually it won't hurt as much. I think that's a very important and very necessary message. Also it had a good ending, a perfect ending i would say

Ditto in the U.S. this opening weekend (per Box Office Mojo's forecast updates [www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=4256&p=.htm]).

Re: Hope it finds the audience it deserves

It has flopped in the US box office.

It's that man again!!

Re: Hope it finds the audience it deserves

Yeah, unfortunately it isn't doing well. I went last night for the 7:20 show and there were only 11 of us in the theater. Besides the lack of advertising, I think this a hard film to sell to people despite the critical praise.

Re: Hope it finds the audience it deserves

Saw it on opening night in the US, and only 7 people were in the theater.

Re: Hope it finds the audience it deserves

Just went to an early evening showing in the UK and there were maybe around 9 people. Just been taking a look at the worldwide gross so far and it's struggling to make its budget. Shame really.
I know the story is quite heavy but its done so bloody well and is a cracking film. It brought me and my mate to tears and we're grown men. It looks like the US opening has killed it from the box office take.

Re: Hope it finds the audience it deserves

I really liked it. I have to admit, however, that I probably would not have sought it out if I hadn't just read the book a few months ago. I wish they'd picked a better time to release it when there were fewer good/heavy coming movies out. It's already a hard sell and there's just too much competition right now. At my local cinema, it is only playing one time a day at 11:20 AM on the smallest screen, so that rules out almost anyone seeing it. I went to see it today since it's my day off and there were maybe ten other people in the theater. It's unfortunate though, as it really is a powerful, well-made film. Maybe it'll get a visual effects nod at the Oscars that could draw some attention to it on home release.

Re: Hope it finds the audience it deserves

It's called a 'theater'. An auditorium is something for school plays.

Re: Hope it finds the audience it deserves

If it was going to end up on anyone's top 10 list, at least in the U.S. it would be in 2016. It was definitely on mine, and I see a lot of films too and I still had it at number 3. It needed some awards consideration for people to take notice though. Unfortunately it was only seen as a depressing film for tweeners rather than one of the most mature coming of age films to come out in a while.

Trying to create a channel based on interpreting, reviewing, and even giving you something to laugh about film. Hope you enjoy what you see. Thanks in advance.
