Outlander : Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

IMDb has really screwed up. I don't do SM so won't have a way to talk to other board users. Grrrrrr Please everyone complain to IMDb and maybe they'll change their minds.

IMDb is the worlds most popular and authoritative source for movie, TV and celebrity content. As part of our ongoing effort to continually evaluate and enhance the customer experience on IMDb, we have decided to disable IMDbs message boards on February 20, 2017. This includes the Private Message system. After in-depth discussion and examination, we have concluded that IMDbs message boards are no longer providing a positive, useful experience for the vast majority of our more than 250 million monthly users worldwide. The decision to retire a long-standing feature was made only after careful consideration and was based on data and traffic.

Increasingly, IMDb customers have migrated to IMDbs social media accounts as the primary place they choose to post comments and communicate with IMDbs editors and one another. IMDbs Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/imdb) and official Twitter account (https://twitter.com/imdb) have an audience of more than 10 million engaged fans. IMDb also maintains official accounts on Snapchat (https://www.snapchat.com/add/imdblive), Pinterest (https://www.pinterest.com/imdbofficial/), YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/imdb), and Tumblr (http://imdb.tumblr.com/).

Because IMDbs message boards continue to be utilized by a small but passionate community of IMDb users, we announced our decision to disable our message boards on February 3, 2017 but will leave them open for two additional weeks so that users will have ample time to archive any message board content theyd like to keep for personal use. During this two-week transition period, which concludes on February 19, 2017, IMDb message board users can exchange contact information with any other board users they would like to remain in communication with (since once we shut down the IMDb message boards, users will no longer be able to send personal messages to one another). We regret any disappointment or frustration IMDb message board users may experience as a result of this decision.

IMDb is passionately committed to providing innovative ways for our hundreds of millions of users to engage and communicate with one another. We will continue to enhance our current offerings and launch new features in 2017 and beyond that will help our customers communicate and express themselves in meaningful ways while leveraging emerging technologies and opportunities.

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

This is really sad, I enjoyed this message board here! And tumblr or twitter is in no way a substitute for this board. Such a pity!

I can recommend this board for those, who'd still like to talk about the show:

http://forums.previously.tv/forum/407-outlander/

It's a good message board. Strictly moderated (sometimes too strict IMO), but with very smart and eloquent posters. Check it out, I would be happy to see some of you there.

Thanks Andorra, I will check that out.

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

Have u started any discussion yet over in the previously tv forum?

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

I just joined the google group broughps set up. I hope many posters from here will join it! You'll find it here:

Someone of this board approached me per PM and asked me to join Broughps' alternative board. Since I have reservations to join any private group I wrote that I would follow the few alternative forums for some time from a distance (I think there were three) and see how they develop.
So, I just did that and took a look at Broughps' Google-forum:

And this is what I saw, how it presents itself:

Not very inviting, is it. Not knowing what a site has to offer doesn't really attract to sign in, let alone to join .
Besides, signing in makes that person de facto a member and the e-mailaddress visible to a perfectly strange owner of a group which makes a somehow introverted impression.

In a recent discussion you wrote that you are permanently online and signed-in with all your devices. I am off-line most of the day, and I only sign in when I post something. So you might want to know what I see when I visit the mentioned site. People who are signed-in permanently won't see this, of course.

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

So you might want to know what I see when I visit the mentioned site. People who are signed-in permanently won't see this, of course.

So what did you see when you signed in at the site? Do you think it isn't sage? Does it say, "JaneDoe@gmail.com" or whatever a person's address is? I've never looked around to see what is there.

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

Don't know that you actually have to sign in. You should just be able to go straight to the board once you become a member. Pretty much like here.

Unless someone is using their email address as their display name no email addresses should be seen by anyone on the board. I have it set up to only show display/user names.

For some reason, and I've contacted Google groups help about it, but the Outlander Google Group has gone private. It's suppose to be public. That's the way I've set it up. Hopefully Google Help will get back to me shortly.

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

I don't stay logged either and I get the same blank page with this message.

I used to be able to see the topics and posts without logging in but that changed yesterday.

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

Not sure what happened and Google help is slow answering how I can get the group back to public.

What's weird is it's still letting people join without me having to "approve" them.

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

So what did you see when you signed in at the site?

I didn't sign in. It's an Internet page, so I don't expect to sign in on each url-address to read content, be it a newspaper, or IMDb pages. The only thing I need is an internet connection. If I want to post a comment, only then I have to sign in.

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

I've been a member of that board since the get-go. You're welcome to jump right in on any topic you want. There's no rule that says you can't be a member of both the previously.tv forum and the new google group that was just started. I find being a member of more than one forum gives me more info and opportunities to discuss the show with others. If one board is focusing on a topic you don't feel like discussing, the other board may be doing the exact opposite.

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

Ok

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

omg, I don't get it either, but maybe it comes from people "reporting" each other and all the negative stuff that goes on. I am on SM but given all the talk about other sites like Tumblr, I REALLY don't want to join those Outlander sites, they sound nuts!!!!!! This site has been quiet of late, but that is because the show is on Hiatus, this site is more active during the show!!! I just don't get it

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

what is SM?

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

Social Media: Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, etc.

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

I was just about to post the same exact thing! Nice knowing you all. I won't use social media for any of the boards I participate on here. I might check out that link Andorra posted above, but otherwise, the other SM platforms seem to be where all of the crazies are! This forum is great, with such polite people and posts. Ugh this is actually a bit upsetting.

Hopefully if everyone contacts IMDb about this and complains they'll change their minds.

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

I'll try.

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

OMGoodness! Where am to go when I Need a mental break from silly stuff.. I have tumbr, twitter, facebook and one other SM account. I only visit tumblr and here IMDb is where I come when I Need a mental break and common sense..

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

Exactly, me too.

Though I suppose I'll become more productive at work without this?

Imo there is zero chance of that happening. This decision has been coming for a long time. More than 10 years ago, IMDb took a very hands-off approach to their message boards. They didn't see them as a profitable section of the website and, in fact, they saw them as unprofitable.

I recall reading a mod's comments back then that mb users didn't make any efforts to support the site by clicking on ads or the amazon.com links. At that time, the mods instituted the posting quota as a means to slow down trolling and spamming on the mbs. They went with automated deletions, explaining that mb moderation was a huge time drain and asset drain on the company.

Since that time, trolling and spamming have continued to grow exponentially on the mbs. The recent fan wars on various boards, along with all the bootleg link spammers (whose websites are loaded with malware, viruses and Trojans) were, imo, the final straws. These activities were sucking a huge amount of resources and bandwidth and IMO IMDb has finally had it. They don't want to put up with it anymore.

These are all theories on my part, but I would bet quite a bit of money that I'm right. I've been seeing it coming for along time. IMDb flat out stated around ten years ago that the mbs were a loss, not an asset; it was only a matter of time before they made this decision. Frankly, I'm surprised they kept the boards as long as they did.

I've seen this happen before on smaller communities. My suggestion is that you at least find somewhere else to gather for a little while, even if you don't decide to stick around. That way, you'll be able to find each other again.

Personally, there will never be another mb community that will come close to doing all that IMDb's has done for all these years. Nobody else has individual dedicated boards for old programs. It really sucks that all the threads and resources on some of those old boards will disappear. Who in this world has enough time to go through all those thousands of boards (containing even more threads) and print off the material they want to archive? Two weeks is not nearly enough time, even for those who are so inclined to expend the enormous efforts to save as much as they can.

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

OH btw, I'm Andorra on the "Previously TV" board, too.

It's not at all like tumblr etc. It's just a message board. Book talk and non-book talk is strictly separated and book readers are forbidden to participate in the non-book threads, even if they don't post spoilers.

No talk about the actors personal life at all, just strict Outlander talk.

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

So bummed. I can't believe they are doing this. What will I do when I have a question about a show? How will I learn all the details of when and where Outlander is filming? (Thanks, Andorra!) What does that last sentence of the IMDb message even mean?
Here is a link to the CompuServe board. Can't recall if anyone else posted it, but it can't hurt to do it again.
http://forums.compuserve.com/discussions/Books_and_Writers_Community/Diana_Gabaldon/ws-books/11?listMode=13&nav=messages

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

Well, all those options they offer are not message boards and can't replace them. I don't want to communicate *with them* but with people who watch the show. This will only mean that I (and others) won't be spending time on IMDB anymore which doesn't sound like something IMDB would want, but I guess they don't care because they're owned by Amazon which is huge and wouldn't give a crap if they have less traffic here.

P.S. That being said, I am a member of the previously.tv forums linked in this thread and it is a good place to discuss Outlander and share news. But, yes it is more highly regulated than here. Still good place.

http://forums.previously.tv/forum/407-outlander/

Oh, and there is an Outlander thread on the following message board hosted by Digital Spy, which is mostly a U.K./European audience; however, anyone can post there. I do as an American. The thread is not too busy because the British don't have as easy access to the show as we do. The board is not as moderated so kind of comparable to IMDB's rules:

Here's the thread:
http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1857385

And here's the part of the board it lives on, under cult, science fiction and fantasy:

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

I am so sad Can we please all move somewhere together? I would miss you guys so much

GRRARGH!

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

I'm in the same situation since I don't do social media either. I'll miss all of you and the conversations we've had.

I went to try and complain to IMDB. Can someone confirm we have to register for a 'Get Satisfaction' account just to send a message to IMDB?

It appears there are only 29 complaints about the boards as of 11 am PST?

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

Yes you have to have a "Get Satisfaction" account to send a message.

I think people are so used to not paying attention to the top of the page that a lot of people aren't even going to realize the boards are gone until they go to read one.

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

My friend was just telling me that Amazon just purchased IMDb so that may have something to do with it

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

It's was 1998 when they bought it, so it's been a while.

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

My friend, who works for Amazon ,said that they bought it in 1998, but has only taken an active interest in IMDb in the past couple years. Still it sucks !!!LOL

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

AlasI neither face, tweet nor tumble. No snapping either. This was my first foray into anythingnever did chat rooms back in the day either. My friends are lucky I text and that is a recent thing, I'm just not tech savvy. Anyway, this is a terrible development. I've really enjoyed "talking" with you all and exchanging ideas and I will miss that, sincerely. Just wanted to say thanks now even though I'll keep coming here I til the last day. Chances are I'll forget when it is the last day, come here and go WTH!!

To those I agreed with, to those I didn't and to those who had no idea what I was talking aboutthank you very much for sharing your thoughts, taking time to do so and including me in a very special group of people. I will miss you all!

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

What's really aggravating is IMDb isn't letting me contact anyone via PM either. Other's have contacted me but I'm not getting a contact button when I pull up someone's profile. Can't contact to get emails.

Also here's a petition to save the boards.

https://www.ipetitions.com/petition/petition-to-keep-the-imdb-messageboards-going

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

Do I have to sign with my real name? Not too many people IRL know about my Outlander obsession, or the other shows I also enjoy. I'd like to keep it that way.

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

I used my IMDb handle.

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

Signed it! I just found these message boards a couple months ago and now pop in multiple times a day!

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

Since IMDb for some reason won't let me PM anyone, if you want to stay in contact with me PM and we can exchange email addresses.

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

This is a bummer! While lack of moderation can make trolls more annoying too deal with, other moderated message boards can stifle descendant from the moderators opinion. Having done both I prefer IMDB's boards.

May I suggestion keeping your IMDB names when going to these new sites posted above, so we can recognize each other.

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

Only on tumblr am I a different name and I don't give that one out. I'll be broughps online forever. lol

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

I'm Andorra everywhere, so you'll find me

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

It was nice talking to y'all. I'll miss being able to do that.

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

Well, I really thought this had to be a very sick joke when I first read it..just now. I check this Outlander message board many times a day, for news, thoughts, ideas, comments about the show, and the books.I don't know any other place to go, although there is some stuff on Twitter, but very limited.

The DG Compuserv site is read-only, unless you are already a member. I found that out the hard way when I wanted to post a comment there and couldn't..I spent a lot of time with trial and error, then phone calls, to no avail.

TO ALL OF YOU WONDERFUL, SMART, INFORMED, CULTURED AND CIVILIZED 'OUTLANDER' POSTERS (you know who you are!).. I will terribly, terribly miss reading your voices, opinions, insights, information, comments, lessons on the film industry..just the boatloads of good stuff that all of you write. You have all made Droughtlander easier to endure.

Love, and all the best to you all. Here's hoping there is another place we'll be able to meet.

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

I don't get it. Aside from the trolls , I don't see why IMDB would close their forums. It is one of the main attraction of this site and a very unique one as well. Nothing else compare.

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

I think this has to do with blow back from the film companies and actors. We use the message boards to critique movies and shows and the negative criticism may be hurting them.

For instance, if a movie opens and we say it is terrible. it may prevent others from going so they may have pushed to get the boards removed.

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

I don't think it is quite that simple and the IMDb TPTB have posted in their statement that there seems to be only a small group of members that are following the mb and most people go on SM the only people that are on the MB are " a small but passionate community" ! And it seems these small communities may be attracting trolls and infighting.. I don't think film companies even care what is posted here, because FB, twitter and IG are make a louder and more immediate impression ..IMO

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

Yeah, it was nice knowing you all guys. But I have to say the place was a cesspool of negativity. Not the Outlander boards but in general

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

Thanks all for some interesting and entertaining discussions we had here. Won't be joining any group, but wish all much of luck with new groups in the making.
I think, I'll stick to the few Twitter-sites (I've been visiting) for a while and see whether 140 characters can do justice to things of interest, such as Sam, Barbour, promotional events, and Outlander. I started actively there last August, so I'll just have to see whether it has enough pulling power. Like here, my username there is Maxine, the avatar depicts the same beach.
We'll probably talk to each other here in the coming couple of weeks. In case we won't, it's been a pleasant one-and-a- half-year on this board; the only one I spent some time since my IMDb-membership, almost 11 years ago.
All the best!

Re: Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

If it wasn't for message boards I may never have watched Outlander. Broughps mentioned it in another board. Too bad.
