Best Buy now requiring customers to pay extra if you want your item in a bag

This is complete insanity.

What the hell is happening to America?

Re: Best Buy now requiring customers to pay extra if you want your item in a bag

That's been in place for years where I live, everywhere you shop.

It isn't a big deal, just buy a canvas bag and use it for everything.

Re: Best Buy now requiring customers to pay extra if you want your item in a bag

Well it certainly hasn't been here. The last year or so they try not to give you a bag unless you ask for it, but today they tried to slam me with an 11 cent charge for a bag. If they can't operate their business and afford to give customers a simple bag to carry their items in as they always have, they should just close their doors.

Re: Best Buy now requiring customers to pay extra if you want your item in a bag

They have been doing it where I live as well. I try not to forget to bring my own reusables. I carry in groceries and forget to put them back in the car. They also banned flimsy plastic bags for ending up in a landfill. They then replaced those bags with extremely thick plastic bags that also end up in the landfill.

Some businesses do not charge for bags. The majority do.

Re: Best Buy now requiring customers to pay extra if you want your item in a bag

Those thick bags are reusable

They're hoping that people will keep bringing those bags back to the store and use them rather than paying for new ones, me thinks

Re: Best Buy now requiring customers to pay extra if you want your item in a bag

That is absolutely the plan. I get it but most people are not going to do it, know what I mean? I have the reusable ones. I just foget to put them back in the car, I need ot get better about it. I do think he is right that it is ridiculous the customer pays for the bags.

Re: Best Buy now requiring customers to pay extra if you want your item in a bag

I see it as a way of trying to get people to stop being wasteful

It does drive me crazy when people don't recycle and waste water

My cuz is like that… an oakie, and yet she thinks she has all the answers

Re: Best Buy now requiring customers to pay extra if you want your item in a bag

I recycle a lot. I also use rainwater to water. NO pesticides. I have a nature garden, I also hang my clothes to dry etc. I try hard I just forget my bags all the damn time.

Re: Best Buy now requiring customers to pay extra if you want your item in a bag

Guess what I did today?

Yes, I went grocery shopping and forgot to bring a bag, but I used paper instead of plastic hehehe

You're doing your part very well, I applaud you

Re: Best Buy now requiring customers to pay extra if you want your item in a bag

I actually went home after work and put a shit ton of the plastic bags in my car! If you have the ability to get rain chains, get one! They are so cool!!

Re: Best Buy now requiring customers to pay extra if you want your item in a bag

What's a rain chain?

Re: Best Buy now requiring customers to pay extra if you want your item in a bag

Best Buy doesn't give a damn about the environment, it's a joke to think they would. What they care about is some genius figured out if they skimp on a million bags they can put an extra 100k in their pockets, screw the customers and screw doing business the way human beings do it.

But i'll screw them, instead. That .11 they tried to extort from me is going to look like nothing compared to what it costs them from here out. I buy enough stuff from Best Buy annually that I have max tier customer status, meaning I get 100% free shipping on anything ordered from them directly. I'll just start ordering through the mail instead of inconveniencing myself and spending my gas money picking things up. Even small items like dvd's are still going to cost them several dollars each to ship. They'll also have the expense of the packaging and paying someone to package the items up and ship them.

I wonder if the tree huggers at Best Buy also consider they are doing a great service for the environment by accepting donations of used electronic devices, which they refurbish for resale or sell for salvage if it's not something they can clean up and sell to someone for a very slight discount.

Ahh, no wonder the store worker looked at me funny when I asked where it was kept, I thought it was because we were in bed bath and beyond.

And you're not being a dick to the cashier/courtesy clerk.
It's a dick move on the cashier's part for not waving the fees.

Why is that a big deal? Most of the stuff you buy there comes in big boxes anyway. Though, these minor things won't end climate change. That shit woukd take regulating big business.

Screw that! We should charge them for simply choosing to shop at their establishment.

OMG, you're worse than a 5 year old. It's amazing how you're crying about 11 cents per bag. It's not like they're charging you 11 cents per ass wipe, nancy. - SpringheelJack1837

They're encouraging people to not be wasteful and to bring reusable bags

Re: Best Buy now requiring customers to pay extra if you want your item in a bag

I don't think they care. It's just virtue signaling. I don't see it as a big deal though. Recycling and using les plastic is a good thing, but I'm also a bit cyncical about big corporations like them. They probably put out more pollution in other ways themselves.

Yes indeed, baby steps

Re: Best Buy now requiring customers to pay extra if you want your item in a bag

I was in best buy before Christmas last year. First time in more than five years probably. Looked at the stereo receivers and it was all smart crap touch display with nothing but HDMI slots.

Yeah they are phasing out old technology. Most laptops no longer have a CD/DVD drive. HDMI is squeezing its way into everything.

Cool story, Jan.

Do you remember when Best Buy used to have like 10 aisles full of dvd movies and if you wanted to watch something it was possible to be pretty much guaranteed they had it and you could get immediate gratification? Now, you'll have to watch it digital, or order it online from Amazon or something, since Best Buy barely even sells movies. Same with PC games and software, they had a massive selection. Now they want you to buy dishwashers or $8000 phones or gtfo.

Yes. I remember getting off the graveyard shift every Tuesday morning to score the new DVD releases.

Hell, I even remember buying CDs/VHS from Best Buy in the good old days….

Lol.

I remember getting my first CD burner at Best Buy. It was like $200, but I felt it earned it's money back after I ripped a few hundred Playstation games I got from Blockbuster….

Re: Best Buy now requiring customers to pay extra if you want your item in a bag

I was a teenagers when cd's first came out, and I had heard ahead of time they were originally going to have a teflon coating to protect them. When I got a couple I was throwing them around the room demonstrating to my cousin how durable they were like an idiot… not knowing the teflon idea was too expensive so they ditched it.

I also remember getting a cd burner a few years later after prices had dropped dramatically to only a few hundred dollars each, and being dissapointed how many discs failed to write properly because the blanks weren't cheap and they were so slow it took forever to burn them.

Re: Best Buy now requiring customers to pay extra if you want your item in a bag

here's another cd story from back when: circuit city, service merchandise, best buy, and others, sold rubber rings to wrap around the cd so as to minimize/eliminate vibration, which could damage the laser and sensitive components.

yes, of course, vibration is a bad thing for any piece of rotating machinery. but this was just pure fear mongering: your cd player would shake so much that it would break! I dont think one verifiable case of excessive vibration breakage ever shown.

another example of in the know experts praying on the uninformed, had to do with the selling of markers: the pitch was that the color of the marker would directly affect the optical properties of the cd and the playback. so markers made with specific inks and specific colors would give the best performance if you decided to write on your cd.

of course, the laser interacted with the bottom layer; so whatever you wrote on the top had no affect on the data being written/read.

You're helping teens!

Starting July 19, we will begin charging 10 cents for each single-use plastic bag provided with store purchases.

A portion of the fee goes toward supporting teens through programs like the Best Buy Teen Tech Center®
