Re: Are men less masculine today than 50 years ago?

The need for traditionally masculine features is becoming defunct, so it nakes sense that we are less masculine.
It's all a charade now. Being physically strong isn't going to ensure survival like it had in the past.

Re: Are men less masculine today than 50 years ago?

Actually you’re wrong. Lots of men today are becoming sick due to lack of physical strength.

You can’t view strength in a vacuum. The ability to move objects releases hormones like testosterone. That affects all of your bodies systems. Being physically strong is a gateway to health and the inverse is very true, which helps explain the rise of chronic physical and mental illnesses in our nation’s men.

Re: Are men less masculine today than 50 years ago?

Okay, but this doesn't say the decreased grip strength is significant enough to impact health.

Re: Are men less masculine today than 50 years ago?

Doctors use grip strength as a barometer of general strength and health. It’s in the NPR article I linked to in OP.

The takeaway is men today are physically weaker than in the past.

Re: Are men less masculine today than 50 years ago?

Men with normal sperm counts have declined dramatically in recent years. Testosterone levels have also declined. These things are all linked to physical strength. I know you think “muscles are for vanity” but come on, man. You’re in denial.

Re: Are men less masculine today than 50 years ago?

I didn't say muscles are vanity. Muscle strength past a certain point is.

My point us still true about these things not matteribg in our survivability. Maybe it's less healthy, but it doesn't hinder the survival of the species.
Diminished sperm and similar things in an overpopulated world isn't a bad thing.

Re: Are men less masculine today than 50 years ago?

You literally used the words “muscles are more for vanity” after I posted my pic. I didn’t want to say anything then but I found it amusing because It’s ludicrous. What doctor told you that?

Being weak absolutely hinders the survival of our species. You don’t think the presence of chronic illness and inability to breed might threaten our species? 😂 what?

Also, consider this. If you’re physical weak, you’re not attractive. Gotta fuck to proliferate, my son.

Re: Are men less masculine today than 50 years ago?

We were talking casually, and I meant like big muscles. Of course having some strength is good. The question is how much is needed for good health. Probably not the amount you see in muscular people.

ᴳᵒ ᶠᵘᶜᵏ ʸᵒᵘʳˢᵉˡᶠ

Re: Are men less masculine today than 50 years ago?

But being muscular is healthy for you, generally speaking. Like everything in life, situations are more nuanced than that. What is clear and what the medical community agrees with me on is this: most men do not have enough strength and it’s harming their health. You cannot call yourself healthy if you are weak.

Re: Are men less masculine today than 50 years ago?

I was speaking vaguely before, but let's be more specific. Having a certain amount of muscle is healthy. Beyond a certain point, it's more about vanity.
This is okay. We're all vain to an extent.

ᴳᵒ ᶠᵘᶜᵏ ʸᵒᵘʳˢᵉˡᶠ

Re: Are men less masculine today than 50 years ago?

It’s not vanity. It’s often a matter of performance. I.e. function. Big muscles and both healthy and useful.

Cheerio.

Re: Are men less masculine today than 50 years ago?

I’ll give you one concession: you can be too muscular. Like, pro bodybuilders, football O linemen, guys all weighing 275-300Lb + are placing much more strain on their hearts and joints. And there’s a difference between high performance and high health. The two don’t always necessarily come together.

Re: Are men less masculine today than 50 years ago?

I don't think we see things so differently, and we got caught up on the wording. Or I did lol. Been super distracted and busy today. Finally have time to sit.

Re: Are men less masculine today than 50 years ago?

Except the need hasn’t declined to the point where being weak is a good thing. As in our bodies are not evolved to tolerate a sedentary lifestyle. So the need has not gone away, it’s just not readily apparent because most people are unconcerned with their health until it’s way too late.

Re: Are men less masculine today than 50 years ago?

They’re riddled with illness, depression, and, uh, physical weakness. This leads to higher mortality rates. They’re often obese because of the excess food in the western world, so they have less sex. So I’d argue they don’t survive just as well but j take your point, it’s less about physical combat and physical struggle. What you’re missing is that piece is necessary to be healthy and live as long and well as you can.

So the lack of physical strength is a problem. And it’s a significant one.

Re: Are men less masculine today than 50 years ago?

Exactly.

I suspect one day we will truly not need to “keep in shape.” We will alter our biology such that it truly becomes a relic of the past. We probably will hardly be described as human at that point.

We will be immortal and the conversation will occur across time and space on a sort of super message board. The sock account problems will be miserable.

Sex will occur over this nonphysical medium. Like that Stallone movie from the 90s.

Re: Are men less masculine today than 50 years ago?

Many “men” grow up jerking to pornhub when they should spend time on manly pursuits like posting on TMDb!

Re: Are men less masculine today than 50 years ago?

They are practically women now.

Re: Are men less masculine today than 50 years ago?

Many of them are women now. Or at least pretend to be.

Re: Are men less masculine today than 50 years ago?

Men are less masculine than they were 10 years ago. Yes, it matters.
